On January 19, our Church commemorates Venerable Macarius the Great, the hermit, Venerable Macarius of Alexandria, and Saint Euphrasia the Martyr. We also commemorate the translation of the relics of Saint Gregory the Theologian, and the great miracle at Nicaea: through the prayer of Basil the Great, the doors of the Catholic Church were opened and the church was handed over to the Orthodox. We commemorate Saint Arsenios, Archbishop of Corfu; Venerable Meletios the Confessor of Mount Galesion; and Saint Mark Eugenikos, Bishop of Ephesus, who stood alone in defense of Orthodoxy and guarded it.

Mark Eugenikos, that excellent and truly great teacher of our Church, was born and raised in the Queen of Cities, glorious Constantinople, in the year 1392. His parents were distinguished people of noble standing, deeply devout and steadfast in the Orthodox faith. His father was George, a deacon and treasurer of the Great Church, and his mother was Maria. They lived in Galata. At Baptism, the Saint was named Manuel, and he had a brother named John. Although the empire was then drawing its last breath, in a wretched state, with the terrible threat of destruction

hanging over their heads, both brothers received an excellent education. They were taught both the wisdom of the Church and secular learning, for that age had men distinguished by wisdom and understanding: Manuel Chrysoloras, Gennadius Scholarius, Joseph Bryennios, Theodore Gaza, and many others. So these two noble brothers, the holy Mark and his brother John, rose like two bright stars. John was also called a philosopher. But blessed Manuel, filled with love for God, left worldly affairs behind. Drawn to the life of hesychia, of inner stillness, he entered the Monastery of Saint George the Great Martyr, known as the Monastery of the Mangana,

where the most virtuous monks of that time struggled in the spiritual life. There he took up the yoke of blessed obedience. At twenty-five, he was tonsured a monk and received the name Mark in place of Manuel. Later he was ordained to the priesthood and became head of the Patriarchal School, which trained many teachers. Among his pupils was George Scholarius, who, under the name Gennadius, became the first Patriarch of Constantinople after the city's fall. Blessed Mark was so renowned for his virtue and learning that, while he was still a priestmonk, the Patriarch of Alexandria chose him as his representative at the proposed Synod for the union of the Churches.

Facing the terrible Turkish threat, Emperor John Palaiologos thought he might secure help from Europe through the pope. He decided to travel to Italy with bishops of the Eastern Church and meet with the pope, whom the speaker calls opposed to God. As agreed with the pope, they would hold a Synod with the Latins, supposedly to reunite the Churches, long divided by schism. The emperor made his wishes known to the patriarchs and asked them to appoint representatives. He also sent envoys to the rulers of Russia, Serbia, and Trebizond, and to the ruler of Wallachia, asking them to send delegates to the Synod. The Patriarch of Alexandria had appointed Saint Mark as his representative

while he was still a priestmonk living in stillness at the Monastery of the Mangana. The Patriarch of Jerusalem also appointed the Saint as his representative. Then Joasaph, Metropolitan of Ephesus, died while preparing to attend the Synod, and Saint Mark was elected Metropolitan of Ephesus in his place. At that point, the Patriarch of Antioch appointed him as his representative too.

Saint Mark was so renowned for his virtue and wisdom that all three patriarchs turned to him, though he was far away. The Orthodox delegation also included Joseph, Patriarch of Constantinople, and Bessarion of Nicaea, a man of great learning who nevertheless leaned toward union on any terms.

The Synod with the Latins began around the end of 1437 in Ferrara, Italy. Its sessions were interrupted about a year later when plague broke out there. They resumed two months later in Florence, from which the Synod took its name. Sadly, the Orthodox bishops were divided. Thirteen of our hierarchs agreed to a formula accepting the Latin addition to the Creed, ‘and from the Son,’ on the explanation that it meant ‘through the Son.’ Only the bishops of Heraclea, Monemvasia, Anchialos, Trebizond, and Ephesus resisted. There was also another formula, declaring that the pope was the successor of Peter, the chief of the Apostles,

the true vicar of Christ, head of the whole Church, father and teacher of all Christians. It gave him primacy over the whole world and said that, through Saint Peter, he had received from the Lord full authority to shepherd, govern, and direct the universal Church, according to the acts of the Ecumenical Councils and the holy Canons. All agreed to this, and only one refused to sign: Mark of Ephesus. Yet that one man was held in such esteem, worth more in their eyes than all the other hierarchs and even the emperors together, that when the pope learned Mark's signature was missing, he exclaimed, ‘We have accomplished nothing.’ Nothing at all. The pope summoned Mark privately, but in vain,

and first tried to humiliate him by making him stand before him. Then he tried to frighten Mark with the threat of condemnation. Mark avoided the humiliation by taking a seat himself, saying that his legs were weak. As for the threats, he replied that he feared nothing. His conscience was clear: he was advancing no error of his own and following no one else's heresy. He remained faithful to Orthodoxy, the faith that the Roman Church had shared with the Eastern Church before the schism.

On their return to Constantinople, Mark of Ephesus was so beloved that his welcome outshone even the emperor's splendor. The people were eager to know what had happened at the Synod in Florence. When the bishops returned on February 1, 1440, people came to greet them and began asking before they had even left the ships: ‘What became of our Church's affairs? How did the Synod go? Did we win?’ Most of the bishops had by then repented. They openly confessed what they had done, telling those who asked: ‘Cut off the right hands with which we signed. Tear out the tongues with which we made such a confession.’ Only one man came ashore without remorse or shame. His soul was grieved, but he was resolved to struggle until the decrees of the Synod of Florence were overturned. That man was Mark.

He took the lead in the movement against the union and succeeded in defeating it. Clergy and people rallied around him and strengthened his struggle. Their indignation and resistance to the decisions made at Florence grew so strong that the emperor did not dare publish them officially. Joseph, the Patriarch, had died in Florence, and the emperor chose Metropolitan Metrophanes of Cyzicus, a friend and advocate of the union, to succeed him. The Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, together with the Metropolitan of Caesarea, then issued a synodal letter condemning the Synod of Florence as a robber synod.

They denounced Metrophanes as one who had betrayed his own mother, the Church, and as a heretic, and deposed those he had ordained. They also wrote to the emperor himself, warning that they would excommunicate him if he continued to protect Metrophanes and support the Latins. Thus the Orthodox faith remained pure and true, and the independence of the Orthodox Church was preserved. In a sense, Saint Mark of Ephesus became both an Athanasius and a Photios for his age. His memory has an enduring claim upon the conscience of our Church and our people. Bessarion looked to union and Western support for the nation's salvation,

but Mark believed that preserving Orthodoxy would keep the people's spirit alive. Even if it could not prevent the coming ruin, one day it would raise a new building upon those ruins. When Saint Mark fell ill and knew that he was leaving this life, he wrote to George Scholarius, the future Gennadius. He asked him to take up the defense of the Church's teaching against the Latins and fight bravely for the Orthodox Eastern Church of Christ, as Mark himself had fought against the union that would destroy souls. Scholarius willingly accepted the Saint's charge and answered him with deep humility and reverence,

promising to struggle in his place for Orthodoxy until death. When the time came for the Saint to leave this valley of tears and receive from Christ, who crowns those who strive, the reward for his countless struggles, he lay ill for fourteen days in his father's house in Galata, Constantinople. He taught the Christians who gathered there what they should do, above all to avoid the union that would destroy souls. He urged everyone to hold fast to the true confession of the Fathers. Then, in 1443, the good shepherd, a true disciple of Christ the Chief Shepherd, peacefully gave up his spirit to Him. The whole city gathered for his burial.

His sacred body was taken to the Monastery of Saint George the Great Martyr at the Mangana, where he had received the monastic habit. His blessed soul left earthly things and went to the Master he longed for, for whose sake he had endured those long and unceasing struggles. And God, who glorifies those who glorify Him, honored His faithful servant with countless miracles. By a synodal decision, the people celebrated his feast each year in Galata on January 19.

The line of martyrs and confessors of the faith goes on without end. Among them stands the great confessor we celebrate today, Saint Mark Eugenikos, a defender of Orthodoxy against what he called papal error and grievous heresy. He reminds us how precious Orthodoxy is, and that we must preserve it whatever the cost. As faith and as a way of life, it brings us into a right relationship and full communion with Christ our Savior. Beyond that, if we look at the spiritual outlook and motives on each side—the so-called supporters of union on one side, and Saint Mark and those who agreed with him on the other—I think

we can see behind the actions and aims of the supporters of union a weakness of faith. They overlooked or undervalued God's part in events and placed too much weight on human power. Their support and hope lay in the human strength they were so eager to secure, rather than in God.

For Saint Mark, God came first: God's grace, power, and protection. They could receive these only by remaining faithful to Christ. Above every earthly aim or success, whether personal or national, stood the eternal salvation of the human person. More striking still, the Saint showed this faith and hope in God during hours of danger and pressure. We too, as individuals and as a people, must always put faith in God first. We should do all we can as human beings, while placing our hope in the almighty and all-good God, rather than in our own strength or works. ‘Cast your care upon the Lord.’ Otherwise, ‘Cursed is the man who puts his hope in man, who makes flesh his arm of strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord.’ But ‘Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.’

‘He shall be like a tree growing by the waters, sending out its roots beside the stream; it will not fear when the heat comes.’
