Today, November 4, our Church commemorates Saint Joannicius the Great of Mount Olympus; the holy priest martyrs Nicander, Bishop of Myra, and Hermas the Priest; Saint Porphyrius the Martyr, who had been a mime; and the holy and most devout Emperor John Vatatzes the Merciful. We also hear the account of the Prophet Jeremiah’s lament for Jerusalem and its capture, and of the ecstasy of Abimelech.
The martyr Porphyrius lived in the time of Emperor Aurelian, around AD 270. He came from Ephesus and was raised among the mimes in the theaters. They imitated other people’s actions and words, and theirs was a profession of very poor repute at the time. Once, while acting out the holy Baptism of Christians, he was baptized by another mime who was pretending to be a bishop. They both meant to mock the divine Mysteries of the Christians. Yet through that baptism, and through putting on the white garment worn by those being baptized—what a wonder!—he received the grace of Christ and truly became a Christian. Holy angels even appeared to him
and taught him to pray facing east and to make the sign of the precious Cross on his forehead and over his whole body. Because of this miracle, many believed in Christ and became members of the Church through holy Baptism. When the ruler ordered the saint to renounce his faith in Christ, he refused. The ruler had him beheaded, and so he received the crown of martyrdom.
The emperor who loved Christ, John, called Vatatzes, reigned from 1222 to 1254. His home was the great city of Adrianople. When his parents died, they left him great wealth. He gave it away to the poor and made offerings to churches. Then he went to Nicaea in Bithynia, where the palace was. After the Latins captured Constantinople in 1204, the seat of the Byzantine emperors had been moved there. In Nicaea he found his paternal uncle, who was a priest in the palace of the reigning Emperor Theodore Laskaris.
Through his uncle, then, John became a friend of the emperor. But he took no pride in this friendship; he treated everyone with humility. His modest character and temperate way of life made him beloved by all. He was approachable, gentle, innocent of malice, and calm, and he spoke to everyone with a kindly expression. Because of these virtues, he married the emperor’s daughter Irene. Before that, he fought a duel with the Latin Corrado, who boasted of his strength, and defeated him while saying the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, help me.” When his father-in-law Theodore died, this grace-filled John became emperor in 1222.
Throughout his reign, he was always most just. Above all, everyone knew him as a wellspring of mercy, and for this reason he was called the Merciful. He was also zealous for piety and the Orthodox faith. In his time, many Jews came to be baptized. He was zealous, too, for the union of the Eastern Orthodox Church with the Western Christians. Pope Gregory IX sent envoys to discuss this union, and a dialogue was held between East and West under the leadership of the then Patriarch of Constantinople, Germanos the New. It would have reached a happy conclusion if the Western Christians had agreed to remove from the Creed
He heard a divine voice within him say: “The Crucified One has risen; the great enemy has fallen; the one who had fallen and been crushed has been raised up.” Strengthened by this voice, he defeated Sultan Azatines in single combat. The sultan had come out of Iconium and was plundering the cities near the Maeander River. Having steered the vessel of his earthly kingdom well, this thrice-blessed man peacefully gave his soul into God’s hands in 1254, at the age of seventy-two. His precious body was buried in the monastery of Christ the Savior, which he himself had built. Later, following a revelation from the emperor himself, his holy body was moved to the city of Magnesia. At the transfer of his holy relics, a great miracle was seen. When the tomb was opened, no foul smell came out. Instead there was a fragrance, as though someone had opened a garden full of sweet-smelling flowers. His body appeared as though seated on a royal throne. Not one joint had come apart, and there was no discoloration, no bad odor, or any other sign of decay. Though he had been buried seven years earlier, he looked alive, with the natural color still in his cheeks. Even the royal garments on his body remained intact,
as though they had been woven that very day. This is how God knows to glorify those who glorify Him. From that time on, his precious relics worked countless miracles through the grace of God dwelling in them. They cured illnesses, drove out demons, and healed other afflictions for all who came to the saint in faith. Thank you.
The purpose of our existence and our life is our theosis, our divinisation: to become like Christ, to be united and become one with Him, to live by His grace and His life, and in this way to grow like Him. But what is God like, if we are to grow like Him? “God is love,” the Evangelist and Disciple of Love tells us. And the priest often proclaims, “For You are a merciful God who loves mankind.” Our most frequent plea is “Lord have mercy.” Therefore, the virtue that makes us more like God than any other is mercy. And Saint John the Merciful, whom we celebrate today, through his life
confirmed once again the words of Christ: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” We saw that after his parents died, the saint gave away his entire great estate as alms. God then showed him mercy both materially and spiritually. He made him wealthy again and even made him an emperor. But more than that—and this matters most—God enriched him with His grace. Though John lived in the world and carried the weight of an emperor’s duties, God made him a saint who worked miracles. May we, too, show mercy as far as we are able, and reach the point
with God’s help, where we do more than a few good deeds: may we receive mercy as a gift from God and acquire a merciful heart. According to Saint Isaac the Syrian, a merciful heart burns with love for everything—for people, for birds, for animals, even for demons, and for all creation.
