Today, July 30, our Church commemorates the Apostles Silas, Silvanus, Crescens, Epaenetus, and Andronicus, together with Saint Julitta of Caesarea, the martyr.

The apostles we celebrate today—Silas, Silvanus, Epaenetus, Crescens, and Andronicus—were among the seventy disciples of the Lord and later became apostles. Silas labored alongside the Apostle Paul.

The Acts of the Apostles tells us that Paul, the great Apostle to the Gentiles, chose Silas in Antioch as his traveling companion and fellow worker. Together they journeyed through Syria, Cilicia, Phrygia, Galatia, and Macedonia. In Philippi, Silas was beaten with rods and imprisoned alongside Paul.

They were freed after an earthquake shook the prison, its doors opened, and their chains came loose.

Silas and Timothy then went to Corinth, where Paul had also gone. Later they returned with him to Antioch. Silas is said to have become bishop of Corinth. The holy Apostle Silvanus served with distinction as bishop of Thessalonica, where he struggled greatly, faced dangers, and suffered for the Gospel of Christ. Of the holy Apostle Epaenetus, Paul wrote in his Epistle to the Romans: “Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia in Christ.” Epaenetus became bishop of Carthage in North Africa.

There he endured many temptations and tribulations at the hands of the pagans. He turned many from idolatry to the knowledge of God, and then departed to the Lord. In the Second Epistle to Timothy, we read that the Apostle Crescens went to Galatia for the sake of the Gospel. Later he became bishop of Chalcedon. He showed many the way to the knowledge of God and led them toward salvation through faith and virtue before departing to the Lord. The holy Apostle Andronicus is chiefly commemorated on May 17, together with Junia. Paul writes of them in his Epistle to the Romans: “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives and fellow prisoners.”

“They are well known among the apostles, and they were in Christ before me.”

Saint Julitta, the martyr of Christ whom we also celebrate today, lived in Caesarea. She was a contemporary of Basil the Great, who held her in high regard for her piety and many virtues. She owned considerable property, but a powerful, greedy man tried to seize it. He dragged her into lawsuits and used false witnesses and other dishonest means against her. Julitta asked Basil the Great for help. Knowing that her cause was just, he agreed to protect her and wrote to Palladius, whom he called an upright, God-fearing man. Palladius could speak on Julitta’s behalf before the governor. Basil also wrote to Julitta herself.

He encouraged her, saying that the Holy God is able to bring her through every affliction, if only we put our hope in Him with a true heart. The case dragged on for a long time. At last, Julitta’s opponent accused her of insulting Julian the Apostate’s decrees in favor of pagan worship. When questioned, she did not deny that she detested the worship of idols. Nor did she cling to passing, perishable possessions. Disregarding all her property, she said, “Let this life perish, together with the glory and wealth of this world. For their sake, I will never deny my God, my Creator and the Maker of all things.” For this confession, she was thrown into the fire.

The flames surrounded the martyr’s body, and her soul ascended to the heavenly dwellings. Her body, however, remained unburned and whole. Thus she lost this passing life and its perishable goods, but inherited the inexpressible, priceless treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Saint Julitta, whom we celebrate today, reminds us in a special way of the saving counsel that every martyr and every saint gives us: love God, and prefer nothing to His love. Rather than lose Christ, Saint Julitta chose to lose everything else: her money, her property, her health, and her life. Let us repeat her words: “Let this life perish, together with the glory and wealth of this world. For their sake, I will never deny my God, my Creator and the Maker of all things.” In this way she was shown worthy of God, worthy of His life and Kingdom. As she lost her perishable wealth,

she gained heavenly blessings. As her property was taken from her, she gained Paradise. As she was unjustly condemned, she became worthy of crowns of glory. As her earthly life was taken away, she received the blessed hope of sharing in the joy of God’s Kingdom with all the saints. Choosing God must also be our daily, constant concern. Every moment we face a choice: God, or something other than God. Our choice sets us on the path of God or the path of sin. It shows whether we are worthy or unworthy of Him.

This is faith: to choose the Holy God, the source of holiness, steadfastly, whatever the cost. This is the faith the Lord asks of us: “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” The difference between us ordinary Christians and the saints is that they remain faithful unto death, while we lack that steadfastness and often readily make other choices. May God grant us illumination and give us the strength to choose Him always and above all else.
