Toward the end of the seventh and the beginning of the sixth century BC. He was of royal descent and belonged to the tribe of Judah. He was among the captives taken to Babylon in 605 or 606 BC, after Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem. He was probably fourteen years old at the time. The Assyrians and Babylonians used to have children from the peoples they had conquered live in the palace and study at the imperial school. They tried to instill their own outlook in them, then use them to govern their subjugated fellow countrymen. This happened to Daniel and to three other young Hebrews: Hananiah,

Azariah, and Mishael, who likewise descended from the house of David. They excelled in their studies and conduct, and won Nebuchadnezzar’s respect and affection. The following event gave Daniel a distinguished place at the imperial court. The king had a dream, but by morning he had forgotten it. He remembered only that it was very important. Unable to recall it and deeply troubled, he summoned the wise Chaldeans in Babylon and asked them to tell him what he had dreamed. They were at a loss. Together they told the king that no one in his empire,

or anywhere on earth, could reveal such a thing. Nebuchadnezzar refused to accept their answer and ordered all the wise men in Babylon to be executed. Daniel asked for more time. He gathered with Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael, and they prayed at length to God, asking Him to reveal the mystery. The Lord revealed it to Daniel in a vision that night. Filled with joy, Daniel rose and blessed God: “Blessed be the name of God from age to age, for wisdom and understanding are His. To You, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise.

You have given me wisdom and strength. You have made known to me what we asked of You, and You have shown me the king’s vision.” Word soon reached the king that Daniel would tell him his dream, and he immediately ordered the young Judean brought before him. Daniel entered and was asked whether he could truly tell and explain the dream. He answered: “God has revealed to the king what is to come. You, O king, saw a great statue. Its head was of gold; its chest and arms were of silver; its belly and thighs were of bronze; its legs were of iron; and its feet were partly iron and partly clay.

You watched as a stone was cut from a mountain without human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and the whole statue was crushed to dust. A strong wind carried the dust away until nothing remained. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.” Nebuchadnezzar was astonished to hear his dream revealed. Daniel had described it exactly, and the king was eager to hear its meaning. Daniel continued: “The dream means this: The God of heaven has given you a great and powerful kingdom, O king. He has made you ruler over many. You are the head of gold.

After you will come a lesser kingdom, then a third, the kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth. A fourth kingdom will be strong as iron. The feet of iron and clay signify a divided kingdom. In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will establish a kingdom that will endure forever and prevail over every other kingdom.” Hearing this, Nebuchadnezzar became convinced that the true God had revealed both the dream and its meaning to Daniel. The mighty, proud king bowed down before the captive Judean. “Truly,” he said, “your God is the God of gods,

the King of kings, and the revealer of mysteries, for He has revealed this mystery.” The king rewarded Daniel by appointing him chief governor over all the provinces of Babylon. In 579 BC, following the custom of pagan kings, Nebuchadnezzar made an enormous golden image of himself. All the officials of the state were summoned to its unveiling and ordered to bow before it as soon as they heard the trumpet and the other instruments. Anyone who disobeyed was to be thrown into a blazing furnace. Daniel happened to be absent from the ceremony, perhaps because he was attending to an important matter of state.

Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael, as faithful Jews, obeyed God’s law and refused the king’s command. Because they would not bow before his image, they were judged to have defied him and faced the appointed punishment. Nebuchadnezzar ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter, and the three were led to it bound. No one had to throw them into the flames: they hurried in willingly, singing hymns and blessing God. They walked inside the furnace, untouched and unharmed by the fire. Instead, they felt a cool breeze, while flames burst outward and consumed the king’s servants

who were trying to make that dreadful furnace burn even hotter. At the sight, Nebuchadnezzar was shaken and filled with wonder. He heard hymns coming from within the furnace. When the flames subsided, he drew near and saw four men walking in the fire. Who was the fourth? As the flames died down further, he approached in humility, called them servants of the Most High God, and told them to come out. They emerged shining. Not a hair on their heads had been singed, nor had their clothing been harmed in the slightest. The king asked about the fourth figure. The young men told him it was an angel of the Lord; according to the Fathers and the hymnology of our Church, however, it was

the Son and Word (Logos) of God, who appeared in the form of an angel and protected and delivered His servants. Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed, “There is no other God who can deliver like this.” He then gave the three young men higher offices than they had held before. Daniel also explained the famous vision of Belshazzar, king of Babylon. At a great feast for a thousand nobles, Belshazzar used as drinking cups the silver and gold vessels of the Jerusalem Temple, the Temple of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken when he captured Jerusalem. This irreverence provoked God’s wrath. At the height of the revelry,

as they drank from the sacred vessels, Belshazzar saw a strange and terrifying vision. The fingers of a human hand, though no person was visible, wrote the words “Mene, Tekel, Peres” on the wall opposite the king. The sight terrified him. Daniel was summoned, and he boldly told Belshazzar that, because he had treated the vessels of the Lord’s Temple irreverently and held this unholy feast, God was declaring what would happen next. Mene meant that God had weighed his kingdom; Tekel, that He had found it wanting; and Peres, that He had dissolved it. That same night, in 538 BC, Cyrus, king of the Persians,

entered Babylon and killed Belshazzar, but treated Daniel with great honor. King Darius also honored Daniel. After dividing his kingdom into 120 provinces, he appointed three senior officials to oversee them, and Daniel was one of the three. But many nobles envied this distinguished Judean, who had been honored by so many kings. They persuaded Darius to issue a decree forbidding personal prayer for thirty days. Anyone who disobeyed would be thrown into the lions’ den. Daniel remained faithful to God’s law and would not set aside God’s will for the will of any man.

He continued his regular daily prayer. So they reported him, and Darius, to his great sorrow, ordered him thrown into the lions’ den. But God protected His faithful servant, who had kept His law. Daniel remained there and came out unharmed; the beasts had not touched him. The Lord also brought deliverance to the devout and beautiful Susanna, whom lustful men had caught in a wicked plot. He inspired Daniel, who was still only a boy at the time.

Daniel proposed questioning the two false accusers separately. Their contradictory answers exposed their slander, and from then on he became renowned among the Jewish people. Daniel is the fourth of those known as the major prophets. The year of his death is not known exactly. He probably died in Susa. Saint Helen brought his holy relic with her to Constantinople when she returned from Jerusalem.

God is wondrous in His Saints. God’s wondrous divine uncreated energy is especially evident in the lives of the Saints and through them. The Holy Triune God acts both in the time of the Old Testament and in the time of the New Testament. In the Old Testament, God appears through the Word (Logos) of God, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, before He took flesh. In the New Testament, He appears in the flesh, in the Person of Jesus Christ. In both Testaments, it is the same Person, God the Word (Logos). Our Church expresses this in the hymn: “He who delivered the youths from the furnace became man and suffered as a mortal.”

In the Old Testament, He acts to teach and prepare us. In the New Testament, He carries out the central work of our salvation. So there is no justification for belittling the Old Testament, much less setting it aside. That is my response to those who attack it. Beyond this, what stands out in both the three holy youths and the prophet Daniel is their unwavering devotion to God’s will, without compromise or retreat, despite the difficult circumstances around them.

They chose God above everything else, and God saved them from mortal danger and brought them honor. Yet even if He had not saved them from those dangers, even if He had allowed them to die, the imperishable treasure of their love for God and His priceless grace would have been more than enough for them. Indeed, as we see in the holy martyrs, the gain in such a case is greater. Having given everything, even their lives, their reward from God would be greater still, if we may put it that way.
