Saint Cyril of the Church was born in Alexandria, Egypt, around AD 375 or 376. His parents were devout and of noble birth, and he was the nephew of Theophilus, Patriarch of Alexandria, through his sister. He studied both theology and the teachings of the Church, as well as secular subjects. He became highly accomplished in philosophy and virtue, and devoted himself continually to reading and studying the divine Scriptures. Seeing his great wisdom and virtue, his uncle Theophilus ordained him archdeacon.
For a fuller grounding in theology and the moral life, he may also have spent some time among the monks of the desert. In 403, he had the misfortune of accompanying his uncle, Archbishop Theophilus, to Constantinople, where the unjust condemnation of Saint John Chrysostom took place at a synod held outside Chalcedon. In October 412, Cyril was elected Archbishop of Alexandria after his uncle’s death, and he was enthroned three days later. According to the historian Socrates, Saint Cyril was accused of supporting and taking part in the persecution of the schismatic Novatians during the early years of his episcopate, and of closing their churches. But the persecution of the schismatics and the closing of their churches were
the work of the civil authorities, who acted on the emperor’s orders. Cyril, then, was not responsible for the decision of Empress Pulcheria and her brother Theodosius II, whom she guided, to enforce laws against the schismatics. Those laws had spread from Rome to the East and troubled the Church. The saint was also accused of persecuting the Jews: of taking away their synagogues, driving them from the city, and allowing crowds to plunder their homes. But if the Jews were indeed expelled from the city and deprived of their synagogues, those actions too fell under imperial authority. We cannot suppose that
Orestes, the prefect of Alexandria, was acting as Cyril’s agent. For one thing, the Archbishop and the prefect were divided by more than a cool relationship; they were openly at odds. For another, the prefect could take such actions only on the basis of prior imperial orders or instructions. A fierce and bloody uprising against the Jews had indeed occurred, because they had suddenly killed many Christians. If this led to reprisals and looting by the crowds, we know that in such circumstances crowds need no one to incite them, and often even the strictest measures by the authorities cannot restrain them.
The saint was also accused in connection with the murder of the pagan philosopher Hypatia. Here too, one may answer that it is far too hasty to assume Saint Cyril could have prevented the attack on her. For four centuries before this, pagan crowds had attacked Christians with fanatic zeal, sparing neither elderly women nor young ones. It is also known that, after the empire became Christian, some followers of ancient philosophy included fanatical conspirators against the Christian order. Hypatia made the mistake of visiting the home of the prefect Orestes regularly.
Orestes was a bitter enemy of Archbishop Cyril and used various measures to obstruct his work. So some inflamed zealots believed that the prefect’s hostility was being stirred up, or even inspired, by the Neoplatonist philosopher, whom they regarded as hostile to Christianity, and they attacked her. Four centuries of conflict may have played a part, but how was Cyril to blame? Cyril’s years as Archbishop were chiefly marked by his struggle against Nestorianism. This heresy was first taught by two men who shared Nestorius’s views, Bishop Dorotheus and the priest Anastasius. They told the people that no one should call Mary Theotokos, the God-bearer.
When the people heard this, they became troubled. Seeking a fuller explanation, they asked Patriarch Nestorius about it, and he too revealed his heretical belief. Nestorianism denied the hypostatic union of Christ’s two natures, divine and human. It accepted only a dwelling together or an association between them, and therefore considered it blasphemous to give the Most Holy Theotokos the title Theotokos. Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, understood the issue thoroughly. He had already protested against this teaching in 420, and he sent Nestorius a letter refuting it and warning him against causing a scandal throughout the Church. Nestorius disregarded the warning.
Cyril then learned from monks in Egypt that Nestorius had written down his teaching and arranged for copies to reach the monks’ hermitages. Cyril sent the Egyptian monks a circular letter refuting the false teaching, and sent copies to Constantinople as well. Nestorius persisted, declaring that the accepted teaching opposed to his own was heretical. Nestorius and Cyril both appealed to Rome. There, in August 430, a synod convened under Pope Celestine condemned Nestorius’s teaching as heresy and called on him to retract it or face anathema. In November of that same year,
a Synod in Alexandria under Cyril set out, in twelve anathemas, the teachings Nestorius was required to reject. That same month, November 430, Theodosius II issued an imperial decree calling for the matter to be examined by an Ecumenical Council, which was to meet in Ephesus on June 7, 431. The opening was postponed for fifteen days because the Archbishop of Antioch and the bishops with him were delayed. They had still not arrived when those fifteen days had passed. So the Council met on June 22, with Cyril presiding. Nestorius did not appear.
The passages from Nestorius’s teaching under examination were read aloud, along with opposing passages from Orthodox Fathers and the letters and rulings against the heresy issued by Celestine of Rome and Cyril of Alexandria. The Council of Ephesus, the Third Ecumenical Council, condemned both the heresy and its chief teacher. The Council then moved on to other matters. After a total delay of twenty days, Archbishop John of Antioch and the bishops with him arrived. Their delay was probably deliberate. They had thought that those who arrived on time would be unable to wait, and that most would leave. When John’s party learned of the condemnation, they were supported by the imperial commissioners
who favored Nestorius. They held their own synod, excommunicated every member of the Orthodox Council that had met, and deposed Cyril and Memnon of Ephesus. Meanwhile, the imperial commissioners required the members of both assemblies to remain in Ephesus. On the basis of the commissioners’ biased reports, an imperial decree led to the imprisonment of the Archbishops of Alexandria and Ephesus in early August. But through the intervention of the devout Orthodox Empress Pulcheria, the emperor’s sister, Theodosius II summoned representatives of both sides before him. He received them at Chalcedon and, after hearing the Orthodox representatives, ordered the acts of the Third Ecumenical Council to be confirmed.
Saint Cyril was released from prison around the middle of October and returned to Alexandria at the end of that month. After his condemnation and deposition, Nestorius was confined to the monastery of Saint Euprepius in Antioch, where he remained for four years. He was then taken to an oasis in Egypt, where he died in 450, it is said, in a manner similar to Arius. Saint Cyril received great honors and privileges from the Third Holy Ecumenical Council. It gave him the title Judge of the Ecumene and the privilege of wearing a fine cloth like a veil on his head when celebrating the Divine Liturgy. The title Judge of the Ecumene signifies
the remarkable judgment the saint made for the whole Christian world, bringing back together in Orthodoxy those whom Nestorius’s heresy had divided. Or it refers to a judgment the saint made between Sergius of Constantinople and Emperor Basil II. The fine cloth signifies the subtlety of the saint’s nous, his spiritual intellect, with which he defined the hypostatic union: the teaching that Christ is one person in two natures. Saint Cyril was also called Pope, perhaps because he held the place of Pope Celestine and represented him at that Third Ecumenical Council. For this reason, all the Patriarchs of Alexandria who succeeded Saint Cyril
came to be called Popes and Judges of the Ecumene as well. When celebrating the Divine Liturgy, they wear a mitre with two peaks and an epitrachelion divided in two from the middle down. After explanations and discussion, John of Antioch and his followers also accepted the decisions of the Third Ecumenical Council. In March 433, Saint Cyril sent John a letter that came to be called the Symbol of Ephesus. In the years that followed, Saint Cyril worked through his writings, letters, and personal efforts to clarify this question and explain the position he had taken.
Saint Cyril died on June 27, 444, after serving as Archbishop for forty-two years. The Church wished to honor together the two great Archbishops of Alexandria: the leading defender against Arianism and the leading defender against Nestorianism. It therefore appointed January 18 as their shared feast day. Anastasius of Sinai called Saint Cyril the seal of the Fathers. The Fourth Ecumenical Council called him a defender of the right and blameless faith. Saint Cyril was also a prolific writer. His works include biblical commentaries, defenses of the faith, doctrinal and polemical writings, and letters. His most highly regarded biblical commentary
is considered to be his commentary on the Gospel according to John, much of which survives. Among his homilies, the one entitled “Praise of Saint Mary the Theotokos,” delivered at Ephesus, is especially renowned. It is regarded as the finest hymn to the Theotokos from the early centuries of the Church.
From the praise of Saint Mary the Theotokos by Saint Cyril, whom we commemorate today, we present a short passage without further explanation, since it is not difficult to understand. It shows the deep devotion he had for the Lady Theotokos, for whom he struggled so greatly. After addressing and praising the fathers of the Third Ecumenical Council, then the city of Ephesus, and afterward John the Evangelist, the saint turned to the Theotokos and said: Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, Virgin Mother, bearer of light, spotless vessel. Rejoice, Virgin Mary, Mother and servant.
Mother, because the one born of you, a virgin, is your Son; mother, because you held him in your arms and nourished him with your milk. Servant, because he took the form of a servant. For the King entered your city—or rather, your womb—and came forth again as he himself willed, while your gate remained closed. You conceived without seed and gave birth in a manner worthy of God. Rejoice, Mary, unfathomable temple, holy indeed, as the prophet David proclaims: “Your holy temple is wondrous in righteousness.” Rejoice, Mary, treasure of the whole world. Rejoice, Mary, spotless dove. Rejoice, Mary, lamp that never goes out, for from you the Sun of Righteousness was born.
Mary, dwelling place of him whom nothing can contain, you who contained the only begotten Word of God, you who brought forth the unfading ear of grain without ploughing or seed. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom the prophets speak and the shepherds give glory, singing with the angels that awe filled hymn: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.” Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom angels dance and archangels leap for joy, sending up hymns of awe. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom the Magi worship, guided by a star that bears light. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom the twelvefold beauty of the Apostles was chosen. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos,
for John, while still in his mother’s womb, leapt for joy, and the lamp bowed before the light that never sleeps. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom unspeakable grace came forth, the grace of which the Apostle proclaimed: “The grace of God that brings salvation to all people has appeared.” Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom the true light came forth, our Lord Jesus Christ, who says in the Gospels: “I am the light of the world.” Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, through whom light shone upon those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death. For it is written: “The people sitting in darkness saw a great light.” What light could that be, if not our Lord Jesus Christ?
The true light that enlightens every person coming into the world. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos (God-bearer), for through you the Gospels proclaim: “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Through you, Orthodox churches are founded in cities, villages, and islands. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, for through you came the conqueror of death and the destroyer of Hades. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, for through you came the Maker of the first man, who set right his transgression and guides us to the Kingdom of Heaven. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, for through you the beauty of the Resurrection blossomed and shone forth. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, for through you the awe-inspiring Baptism of holiness flowed in the waters of the Jordan. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, for through you John and the Jordan are sanctified, and the devil is put to shame. Rejoice, Mary, Theotokos, for through you every believer is saved.

Μαρία, το χωρίον του αχωρήτου, η τον μονογενῆ Θεοῦ Λόγον χωρήσασα, η τον στάχυν ἄνευ ἀρότρου και σπέρματος βλαστήσασα τον ἀμάραντον. Χαίροις Μαρία Θεοτόκε, δι' ἣν προφῆται και λαδοῦσιν, δι' ἣν ποιμένες δοξολογοῦσιν, λέγοντες σὺν ἀγγέλοις τον φοβερόν εκείνον ύμνον: Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ και ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία. Χαίροις Μαρία Θεοτόκε, δι' ἣν άγγελοι χορεύουσιν, αρχάγγελοι σκιρτώσι φρικωδεστάτους ύμνους αναπέμποντες. Χαίροις Μαρία Θεοτόκε, δι' ἣν μάγοι προσκυνοῦσιν, ὑπὸ ἀστέρος λαμπαδούχου ὁδηγούμενοι. Ἰωάννης ἔτι ὢν ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐσκίρτησεν και προσεκύνησεν ὁ λύχνος τῷ φωτὶ τῷ ἀκοιμήτῳ. Χαίροις Μαρία Θεοτόκε, δι' ἧς προῆλθεν ἡ χάρις ἡ ἀνεκλάλητος, περὶ ἧς ὁ Ἀπόστολος βοῶν ἔλεγεν: Ἐπεφάνη ἡ χάρις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ σωτήριος πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις. Χαίροις Μαρία Θεοτόκε, δι' ἧς προῆλθε το φῶς το ἀληθινόν, ὁ Κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, ὁ λέγων ἐν τοῖς Εὐαγγελίοις: Ἐγώ εἰμι το φῶς τοῦ κόσμου. Χαίροις Μαρία Θεοτόκε, δι' ἧς ἐπέλαμψε φῶς τοῖς ἐν σκότει και σκιᾷ θανάτου καθημένοις. Ὁ λαός γάρ φησιν, ὁ καθήμενος ἐν σκότει, εἶδε φῶς μέγα. Ποῖον ἄρα φῶς; Ἦ μὴ τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν;
