Today, August 25, our Church commemorates the return of the relic of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle; Saint Titus the Apostle, Bishop of Gortyna in Crete; and Saints Epiphanios, John, and Menas, Archbishops of Constantinople.
Bartholomew, the glorious disciple and Apostle of Christ, traveled through many places preaching the name of Christ. At last he reached Greater Armenia, where he was crucified. His spirit ascended to heaven. The Christians there placed his holy relic in a stone reliquary and hid it in Urbanopolis. It became a source of many healings, and people flocked there to be cured of their illnesses. Seeing these miracles, the servants of the evil one raged against the reliquary and the apostolic relic it held. When they found an opportunity, they threw it into the sea
along with four others containing the relics of the holy martyrs Papianos, Loukianos, Gregory, and Akakios. God providentially allowed this so that the sea through which they passed would be sanctified, and the places where the holy relics came to rest would be blessed. By the grace of God, the sacred relic of the Apostle Bartholomew passed through the Black Sea and the Hellespont, reached the Aegean Sea, and from there entered the Adriatic Sea, which stretches from Kythera to Venice. Leaving the great island of Sicily to its left, it came to the island called Lipari.
The other four reliquaries came ashore in different places: that of Saint Papianos at Amila in Sicily; that of the martyr Loukianos at Messina in Sicily; that of Saint Gregory at Colyme in Calabria, Italy; and that of Saint Akakios at Askalous. The arrival of the divine Apostle’s sacred relic was revealed by God to Agathon, Bishop of Lipari. He went straight down to the shore. When he saw the great and wondrous reliquary holding the apostolic relic, he was filled with awe. He praised the Apostle of the Lord and the island, which had been counted worthy to receive such a treasure.
The Apostle’s sacred reliquary had to be carried to a fitting and splendid place, where a church would then be built in his name. Many people tried to drag it to one place or another, but it would not move as they wished. Then, following a revelation from God, blessed Agathon tied ropes from it to two young cows. In this way he drew it to the place the Apostle had chosen. Among the other miracles worked by Saint Bartholomew was the following, which may seem unbelievable to those who have never experienced the miracles of God. A small island called Prichanos, or Pyrpnon,
lay near Lipari. It had a spring that continually gave off hot water, harming Lipari because the two islands were so close. As the young cows pulled the Apostle’s reliquary, divine power moved that little island about a kilometer away from Lipari, where it remains to this day. From then on, Lipari suffered no harm, and the little island has continued to proclaim the Apostle’s grace and power. Bishop Agathon built a beautiful church in the Apostle’s name and placed the stone reliquary with his revered relic there as a treasure. Who could recount the miracles that took place there each day?
Much later, in the year 829, during the reign of the iconoclast emperor Theophilos, the island where the Apostle’s relic lay was captured by the Hagarenes. Because of the sins of its inhabitants, it was laid waste and left uninhabited. When the ruler of Benevento heard of the miracles worked through the apostolic relic, his fervent faith in the Apostle moved him to send men to bring that precious relic from Lipari.
As they were bringing it back, the ruler went out to sea with the city’s bishop and many other clergy and laypeople to greet the Apostle. With great honor and reverence, they escorted the holy relic into the city and placed it in a fitting place. There it works many miracles and healings each day for those who come to it in faith, to the glory of our holy and all-good God.
Saint Titus the Apostle, whom we also celebrate today, was Greek by birth and distinguished in both family and education. He became a Christian and a disciple of Saint Paul the Apostle, working with him to spread the Gospel. He accompanied Paul on his second journey up to Jerusalem and was present at the Apostolic Council held there. Later he was sent to Corinth to see the condition of the Church there for himself and to tell Paul how his First Epistle to the Corinthians had been received. On his return, he met Paul in Macedonia. Then, according to some accounts, in AD 58,
he went with Paul to Crete. Paul appointed him bishop there to preach the Gospel and establish priests throughout the island. From the Second Epistle to Timothy we learn that Titus went to Dalmatia, though we do not know why. The Apostle Paul also sent him the well-known Epistle to Titus. In it, Paul calls his Greek disciple his true son. We also learn that Paul intended to send Artemas or Tychicus to take his place for a time, and asked Titus himself to come quickly to meet his teacher in Nicopolis.
The same epistle tells us that Titus had distinguished coworkers in his ministry on Crete: Zenas the lawyer and the renowned Apollos. Saint Titus the Apostle died in Crete in AD 105.
In his First Epistle to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul describes the apostolic life and the marks of distinction the world gave the apostles—marks that became their glory. One was that people regarded them as men condemned to die, worthy of execution. Most of the holy Apostles followed Christ by living through suffering and ending their lives as martyrs. The Apostle Paul himself writes, ‘I die daily,’ and elsewhere, ‘For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.’ So the Apostles lived as condemned men. They had given up their lives for Christ.
They were ready to die for Christ. That is why they accomplished such great works. They lived as though already dead. Here lies the secret of their success. First, a person resolved to face death is ready to face anything, and so can dare to do great and important things. Second, the resolve to die for Christ draws abundant grace from God. It shows great love for Christ. And when someone has given up his claim on the world, he is brought low; this is the weakness in which the power of Christ comes to dwell.
‘For My power is made perfect in weakness.’ The Apostles lived as men condemned and already dead, yet they had come to know their resurrection. Whoever has risen in Christ, whoever has been counted worthy to enter the age to come, can feel, live, and say with the Apostle: ‘The world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.’ To me, the world is crucified; it is dead. And I have been crucified to the world; I am dead to the world. ‘It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.’ Do we want to attain this life-giving death, or have we become so comfortable with worldly things that we cannot bring ourselves to let them go?

κοντά στο νησί της Λιπάρας, είχε δε πηγή η οποία συνέχεια έβγαζε ζεστό νερό που έκαμνε κακό στη Λιπάρα, καθώς ήταν πολύ κοντά της. Το νησίδιο λοιπόν αυτό, κατά την ώρα που οι δαμάλες έσυραν τη θήκη του Αποστόλου, με θεία δύναμη απομακρύνθηκε από τη Λιπάρα περίπου ένα χιλιόμετρο, καθώς φαίνεται μέχρι σήμερα. Έτσι, από τότε, και το νησί δεν βλάπτεται, και τη χάρη και δύναμη του Αποστόλου πάντα διακηρύττει. Όταν δε ο Επίσκοπος Αγάθων έκτισε ναό ωραιότατο στο όνομα του Αποστόλου, αποθησαύρισε σε αυτόν τη λίθινη λάρνακα με το σεβάσμιο αποστολικό λείψανο. Ποιος δε μπορεί να διηγηθεί τα θαύματα τα οποία τελούνταν καθημερινά εκεί;
Η γαρ δύναμίς μου εν ασθενεία τελειούται. Οι Απόστολοι ζούσαν σαν κατάδικοι και πεθαμένοι, είχαν γνωρίσει την Ανάστασή τους. Όποιος αναστήθηκε εν Χριστώ, όποιος αξιώθηκε να εισέλθει στον μέλλοντα αιώνα, αυτός μπορεί να αισθάνεται, να ζει και να λέγει το του Αποστόλου: «Εμοί κόσμος εσταύρωται, καγώ τω κόσμω». Για μένα ο κόσμος έχει σταυρωθεί, είναι νεκρός. Κι εγώ έχω σταυρωθεί για τον κόσμο, είμαι νεκρός για τον κόσμο. Ζω δε ουκέτι εγώ, ζη δε εν εμοί Χριστός. Εμείς θέλουμε να αποκτήσουμε τη ζωοποιό αυτή νέκρωση ή τόσο βολευτήκαμε με τα κοσμικά που δεν εννοούμε να ξεκολλήσουμε από αυτά;
