On the ninth of August, our Church commemorates Saint Matthias the Apostle; the Ten Holy Martyrs who suffered at the Bronze Gate for the Holy Icon of our Savior Jesus Christ—Julian, Marcian, John, James, Alexios, Demetrios, Photios, Peter, Leontios, and Maria the Patrician; Saint Antoninus, the martyr of Alexandria; and the Venerable Psoes. We also commemorate the discovery of the venerable Icon of the Lord at Camuliana, made without human hands.

The Apostle Matthias was one of the Seventy. He was numbered among the Twelve Apostles in place of Judas Iscariot, as we read in the first chapter of Acts. After his betrayal, Judas died by hanging himself. After the Resurrection and the Ascension of the Lord, the eleven disciples, together with the Lady Theotokos, the myrrh-bearing women, and other believers, remained in the Upper Room. Peter proposed that they choose someone in Judas’s place from among those who had followed Christ from His Baptism to His holy Ascension, so that he could be a witness to His Resurrection. They accepted the proposal and put forward Joseph,

called Barsabbas and also known as Justus, and Matthias. Both were among the Seventy disciples. They cast lots, and those gathered in the Upper Room prayed: “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” The lot fell to Matthias, and so he was added to the eleven apostles. We do not know the details of his later life. We do know that he labored alongside the others in Jerusalem and later preached the Gospel in Ethiopia,

where he ended his life as a martyr.

We also commemorate the discovery of the venerable Icon of the Lord at Camuliana, made without human hands. Our Lord Jesus Christ, our righteous and only true God, is invisible in the essence of His divinity, unconquerable in His might, and beyond words in His power. Out of His natural love for humanity and His goodness, He, the perfect image of the Father, graciously chose once more to appear in a Holy Icon, through His goodness and boundless mercy. At His birth and coming in the flesh, He guided the Magi by a star. Here, by revealing Himself in an icon, He brought those still childlike in understanding to full knowledge.

It is truly wondrous and awe-inspiring that the Creator of all should be seen by us, who are made of clay, and should graciously accept veneration through a bodily image. Once again, the Master condescended to us. In Camuliana, a town in Cappadocia in Asia Minor, whose bishop was under the Metropolitan of Caesarea, lived the blessed Bassa, later called Aquilina. She was a pagan, and her husband, Camulus, was also a pagan. He was the local ruler there during the reign of Diocletian, in the year 289 after Christ. Camulus

persecuted and fought the Christians, as Diocletian had commanded him. But his wife Aquilina was granted illumination by divine grace and came to know the true God. She wanted to separate from her husband and his impiety, and sought to turn wholly to God, the King of all. Fearing her unbelieving husband, she kept this knowledge of God hidden in her heart. She continually asked the Lord to count her worthy to receive Holy Baptism, while devoting herself to vigils, fasting, and prayer, and preserving purity of soul and body. Through these things, she was counted worthy to receive the following revelation

from the Holy Spirit: “I have come to you now because your tears have moved me. Prepare a clean table, and place on it a white cloth and a bright, unused vessel filled with water. Set these things in a room made ready, and my right hand will cover you. I will reveal myself to you as I choose.”

Blessed Aquilina did as the voice told her. And Christ the Master, who never overlooks those who hope in Him, cry out to Him in their spiritual heart, and love Him with all their heart, descended at about the fourth hour of the morning. All the angelic hosts came with Him, singing, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Sabaoth.” Christ the Master had washed His disciples’ feet and wiped them with the towel around His waist. Now, with His pure hands, He washed His holy face in the water in that vessel. Then He dried

His spotless and divine face with that clean cloth. At once, without any human hand, the likeness and image of His divine form, His all-holy and true features, were imprinted on the cloth. Earlier, out of love for humanity and gracious condescension, the Lord had revealed His becoming man. Now He revealed it to the devout Aquilina. Seeing this act of divine care and condescension, she thanked the Lord fervently and could not stop giving Him thanks. Fearing her husband, she hid that image of the Lord, imprinted by God, in a corner of her house and held it in the highest honor. When she foresaw that her life was drawing to an end,

she made provision for this Holy Icon of Christ the Savior, made without human hands. She wrote down the whole account, placed it together with the Holy Icon inside a wall, and sealed the place. After blessed Aquilina died, the hiding place was revealed to a holy man, said to have been Saint Gregory of Nyssa:

“In Camuliana, in the house of Saint Aquilina, the Icon of the Lord made without human hands lies hidden in a certain place.” The saint went to the place he had been shown, opened the wall, and found the box containing the icon. More wondrous still, beside the icon he found a lamp still burning and a small censer still giving off the fragrance of incense. He took the icon and placed it in the Metropolitan church of Caesarea. Many healings took place through it, just as healings had taken place when the Lord lived among us in the flesh. The blind, the lame, the paralyzed, and those afflicted by demons were healed, revealing the fullness of the grace given by the Holy Spirit. For the Word (Logos) of the Father, who is without beginning, became man; He lives and reigns now and unto the ages of ages. These events took place in Camuliana. As we have said, the Icon of the Lord made without human hands was hidden

during the reign of Diocletian and revealed during the reign of the devout Theodosius the Great, in the year 392, to the glory of the only-begotten Son of God the Father.

The special and wondrous way God entered the life of the devout Saint Aquilina is striking. Even while she was still a pagan, God’s grace granted her illumination, and she came to know Him. Later she received the great blessings of hearing the Lord’s voice and being given His image made without human hands. Yet these blessings did not come without preparation, nor did she leave them unused. Even before receiving Holy Baptism, Aquilina lived in prayer, fasting, vigils, and purity. The Lord Himself told her that her tears had moved Him to come to her. Afterward, too, she received the divine gift with great gratitude and reverence. We might also say that she received it with great humility. Throughout her earthly life she kept the wondrous event secret. She did not rush to announce it and draw attention to herself as a saint worthy of such a great and astonishing gift from God. In the end, we could say that God gave her according to her heart. Perhaps we sometimes feel, though we do not say it aloud, that God has blessed us less than others, or less than He should have,

and so we more or less blame God for our poor spiritual state. But let us never doubt that our God is just, all-wise, and all-good. He wrongs no one, and He orders everything for our spiritual good. He gives us according to our hearts and according to what benefits us, taking into account what we have done and what we will do, for our own good and the good of others. It is quite possible that He withholds blessings from us here so that we may contribute more ourselves and labor harder in the spiritual life, becoming more receptive and worthy of greater blessings.

We have more to receive in the life to come. In the end, both a small measure and an abundance of God’s blessings can benefit us. A small measure helps us grow in humility and spurs us to greater effort. An abundance awakens us to our unworthiness of what we have received and stirs us to respond wholeheartedly to God’s love. For those who love God, all things work together for good.
