Today, October 29, our Church commemorates Saint Anastasia of Rome, the venerable martyr; Saint Abraham and his niece Mary; the holy martyrs Cyril, Minis, and Mineus; Saint Sabbas the General, a martyr; Saint Anna, who was renamed Euphemianos; Saint Melitine, a martyr; Saint Athanasios, the new priest martyr; Saint Timothy of Esphigmenou, the new venerable martyr; and Saint Abraham, the Russian archimandrite and wonderworker.
Abraham was born in Edessa in Mesopotamia in AD 296. From childhood he was humble and virtuous. He was his parents’ only child, and when they saw how he lived, they feared he might become a monk. So they arranged for him to marry against his will. But Abraham longed for Christ. He left everything worldly behind and went into the desert. He shut himself in a small hut and lived with great hardship and ascesis, or ascetic discipline. He walled up the door of his cell, leaving only a small window through which he sometimes received bread and a little vessel of water. There, enclosed in his cell, he prayed without ceasing and with great humility.
People came to him for a blessing. He guided them and answered their questions, for the Holy Spirit illumined him. After ten years, his parents died and left him all their wealth. He kept none of it, but gave everything to the poor. He embraced a life without possessions so completely that all he had was an outer garment, a coarse hair cassock, a mat to sleep on, and a cup for his small measure of water. Though he owned nothing earthly, he was rich in virtues, especially love for his neighbor and humility. After fifty years of ascesis, or ascetic discipline, he was pressed into being ordained a priest for a village called Tainia,
whose people were pagans and difficult to deal with. Many priests and deacons had been sent there before to lead them to Christianity, but had left after being mistreated, without success. For three years, they mistreated our saint as well. Yet he met their hatred with love and their anger with gentleness.
He taught them and pleaded with them to know the true God and reject their abominations. In the end, his patient endurance and love prevailed and bore fruit. The Lord illumined those rough people. They came to know the truth and decided to accept it. The saint instructed them in the faith, baptized them, and established them in life in Christ. Then he returned to his beloved hesychia, his inner stillness.
There the evil one attacked him in various ways, planting logismoi, intrusive thoughts of pride, in him. But the venerable Abraham drove them away with the shield of humility and the sword of the Word of God. He read the service with tears and wept for the sins of others. Each day he labored as though it were his last. The grace of God was plainly with him. Despite his fasting and hardships, he never fell ill. His cassock did not wear out, but remained intact to the end of his life. Then something else happened. When Abraham’s brother died, he left behind a seven-year-old daughter named Mary. Her relatives brought her to the elder, her spiritual father. He gave her a small cell beside his own
where she could live in hesychia, in inner stillness. Through his little window he taught her and encouraged her in her spiritual struggles. When she was twenty, she fell into a grave sexual sin. Overcome by despair, she fled in secret and went to live in a brothel with other women there. When the elder realized she was gone, a vision showed him her fall. For two years he wept and begged the Lord to illumine her and bring her back to metanoia, to repentance. Then a friend came and told him in detail what had become of his niece. The venerable Abraham did not delay. Setting aside his old age, his inner stillness, and his ascesis, or ascetic discipline, he put on a soldier’s clothes and set out
in disguise to find her. Through his words and encouragement, he helped her recognize her fall, overcome her shame and despair, and decide to return. Mary shut herself in her cell and struggled each day with fasting, prayer, tears, and every hardship as she repented of her sins. So deep was her metanoia, her repentance, that the all-merciful God granted her forgiveness and also the power to work miracles. With God’s help she healed many sick people and performed other miracles. When Abraham saw this, he rejoiced and thanked the Lord, who had granted him the grace to see such sweet fruits of his labors. And so,
having lived a life pleasing to God, Abraham departed this passing life on October 29 in the year 366. Many people took a small piece of his cassock, treasuring it as a protection against every evil. Five years after the venerable Abraham’s death, the venerable Mary also reposed. Her blessed soul went to Paradise, while her precious relic shone with uncreated light, revealing the divine radiance her soul had received and in which her body, too, shared.
The story we have just heard about Saint Abraham’s niece teaches and comforts us. It teaches us to be especially watchful when temptations first arise, so that we do not fall. And if we do fall, what we need is metanoia, repentance, rather than despair. It comforts those who have fallen, because repentance can make even the greatest sinner a saint. It also comforts those who love them and care about them. We could say that Mary’s story is repeated often today, sometimes more closely and sometimes less so. Children of devout parents,
raised in Christian homes, in the Church, and in catechism classes, later drift away from the Church, usually in their teenage years. They live in sin and understandably cause great pain to their devout parents, especially to mothers who feel inconsolable. We believe the story of Saint Mary can comfort them. It tells us that God will not let the work done in childhood go to waste, nor the sighs, tears, and prayers of a mother. If some willingness for good remains and the heart has not become hardened, God, in His goodness,
will send an Abraham to stir that person and lead them back. If it is not a person, it may be an event, perhaps an illness or a death. In this way, too, the saints and the accounts of their lives can help us spiritually by giving us comfort.
