Christ’s greatest promise was that He would send the Holy Spirit to His disciples. And indeed, after our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to the Apostles. The Spirit enlightened them and gave them the courage and strength to preach the Gospel of Christ and spread the Christian faith everywhere.
But as the number of Christians grew, the Twelve Apostles could no longer carry out all their sacred duties. So they ordained seven men as deacons to help them. Their hearts burned with love for God and their neighbor, and they led virtuous, holy lives.
One of these seven virtuous men was Stephen the Protomartyr. He was of Jewish descent, and Greek was his native language. As soon as he was ordained a deacon, he became a fervent and trustworthy missionary, sharing the truth with those around him with love and warmth.
God spoke through him, enlightening him about what to say and how to say it. Stephen worked steadily to lead people to Christ. He fearlessly preached the one true God wherever he went and shared the Christian truth with people who lived in the darkness of error.
He taught them this: “Christ is the one true God. He came to earth poor and without sin, and you crucified Him like a criminal. Then, in glory, He sat at the right hand of His Father. He will come again to judge the whole world and give each person what is due.”
When the Jews heard Stephen say these things, they came to hate him deeply. They paid false witnesses to slander him, stirred up the scribes and all the people, and seized Stephen and brought him before the court.
There, other false witnesses accused him, saying, “This man is an enemy of our laws, and he blasphemes Moses.” When the high priest asked Stephen whether the accusations were true, Stephen calmly recounted the whole history of the Christian faith and showed him that Christ is the one true God.
The Jews who heard him were so furious that they were ready to seize him and tear him apart. Stephen, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, raised his eyes to heaven. This angered them even more. Gnashing their teeth, they seized Stephen by the hair without waiting for a sentence. They dragged him over stones and dirt outside Jerusalem, to the place now called the Gate of the Most Holy Theotokos.
They hurled stones at him with all their strength. Stephen, full of kindness, raised his hands to God and begged Him to forgive them. Seeing the crowd throw stones that wounded the martyr all over his body, the Most Holy Theotokos knelt with tears in her eyes and prayed to her Son to forgive the furious crowd and not hold this sin against them.
As Stephen lay dying from the brutal stoning, he turned toward heaven and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” At once, Stephen the Protomartyr gave up his holy soul. Saint Stephen was the first to suffer martyrdom for his faith in our Christ, three years after the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. That is why he is called the Protomartyr.
Others were also killed on the day Saint Stephen gave up his spirit. After his death, some devout Christians went to the place of his martyrdom and lifted his holy body from among the stones.
They placed his body in a large box made from peach wood and, after mourning him, buried him with great honor. Many years later, Christianity had become the official religion of the state and the persecutions had ended. The account describes Saint Stephen with long blond hair down to his shoulders, wearing a white sticharion and holding a golden staff. With the staff he struck Lucian and showed him the place. Bishops went there, dug, and found the box. The account then quotes the angelic hymn: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace.”
Those who saw his body said that the wounds left by the stones shone like stars in the sky. Many priests, with deep respect and reverence, lifted his body and carried it to the Church of Holy Zion, chanting hymns and honoring the Saint.
Our Church celebrates Saint Stephen on September 15. Many miracles occurred, and sick people who sought the Saint’s help were healed. A church in Jerusalem was dedicated to Saint Stephen, and his holy relic was brought there. Juliana, the wife of Alexander, then decided to take her husband’s body to Constantinople and live there with her father.
By divine will, she took the wrong casket. Instead of her husband’s, she took Saint Stephen’s and set out for Constantinople. As they traveled through the night, divine hymns could be heard. From far away came the cries of demons, saying, “Woe to us! Stephen is passing by and wounding us though he cannot be seen.”
As they neared Constantinople, the emperor learned that Juliana was arriving with the Holy Relic. He ordered the Patriarch and all the people to go out to meet her. The animals carrying the Holy Relic stopped just outside Constantinople, at a place called Constantia.
They began striking the animals to make them move, but the animals would not budge. Then a voice was heard saying, “Do not strike them. The Holy Relic must stay here.” When the Patriarch, the priests, and everyone present heard the voice, they were astonished.
The emperor ordered a church dedicated to Saint Stephen to be built on that spot. Later, the relic of the Protomartyr was moved to the Church of Saint Stephen, which they built within the Great Palace.
Our Church celebrates the transfer of his relic on August 2. Later, when Eudocia the Athenian, empress of Byzantium, traveled to the East, she took the Saint’s left foot with her for protection in a silver case. During her journey, she fell ill and sought refuge in Theodoroupolis, a city in Paphlagonia, where she was healed. In gratitude, Eudocia gave the Saint’s foot to that city, and the holy relic was kept there from then on. A little later, the Patriarch of Jerusalem sent the Saint’s right hand, which had been kept in the Church of Holy Zion, to the sister of the Byzantine emperor Theodosius.
The Patriarch of Constantinople dreamed of a handsome, modestly dressed young man. The young man said he was grieved because, throughout the city he had walked, he had found only one devout and virtuous person: Eutropios. When the Patriarch awoke, the dream made such an impression on him that he told a priest about it and sent him out. A few days later, they found Eutropios in prison.
Eutropios was a reader at Hagia Sophia. The prefect of the city, who was a pagan, falsely accused him of setting fire to the church, arrested him, and threw him into prison. They tortured him in the cruelest and most inhuman way. He was the one and only Eutropios whom the Protomartyr had found.
The Byzantine Emperor Arcadius built this church to house the Protomartyr’s relics when they were brought from Jerusalem to Constantinople. Later, the sacred relic of the Protomartyr’s brain was kept in this church by the son of Emperor Alexios.
At the Arch of the Ox, in the Forum of Constantine, and at the monastery’s dependency, a leading citizen of Tyana built a large church dedicated to Saint Stephen in the basilica style. Many churches have been dedicated to him. The oldest, and the first, was built in Corfu by the Apostles Jason and Sosipater.
Lasa of the East, whose relic is preserved in a church in Kokkinia, Attica, also built a church dedicated to Stephen the Protomartyr. Our Church commemorated Saint Stephen on December 26, the day after Christ’s birth, to show more vividly that he was the first martyr.
Later, however, in the fourth century, the Synaxis of the Theotokos (God-bearer) was appointed for the second day of Christmas. The feast of Saint Stephen was moved to the third day of Christmas, and since then it has been celebrated on December 27 instead of December 26.
