Saint Spyridon was born in AD 270 in Assia, a village that is now under occupation. His family were shepherds and were fairly well off. He had little formal education and never attended the higher schools that other great hierarchs of the Church had attended.

Yet Holy Scripture, the book of God, was his constant companion every day. He took it wherever he went: at home and when he led the sheep out to pasture. Saint Spyridon was a simple, kind man, full of love for his neighbor.

On Sundays and feast days, he often brought the other shepherds to church. Afterwards, he would explain the Gospel or epistle reading to them. God blessed him to become a protector of widows and orphans.

During the persecution Maximinus unleashed against the Christians, Saint Spyridon was arrested. Such a fervent defender of God’s Christian truth could not escape notice. He suffered many tortures. According to one writer of the saints’ lives, in one of them his leg was dislocated and one of his eyes was injured.

After Constantine the Great issued his decree, Saint Spyridon returned to Tremithous. He married a devout woman, and they had a daughter named Irene. Even in the happy days of family life that followed his release, the flame of his faith in Christ burned as brightly as ever.

Before long, however, his wife died. To heal his grief, Spyridon devoted himself even more fully to teaching the word of God. After much urging, he was ordained a priest. And he truly was a priest faithful to the Gospel: above reproach, watchful, self-controlled, dignified, hospitable, and able to teach, with children who were obedient and respectful.

Spyridon served so faithfully as a priest that, when the bishop’s seat in Tremithous, Cyprus, fell vacant, the people and clergy chose him as bishop by acclamation. In that role, he grew so greatly in virtue that God granted him the grace to perform many miracles.

He continued to wear the same plain, humble clothes and a cap made of palm leaves. He lived in similar poverty, for he shared everything he owned with the poor. His holy life can still teach anyone today who is willing to study it with an open mind.

Saint Spyridon also took part in the First Ecumenical Council. There, the authority of his holy and upright life helped him overcome the Arians, and he became one of the outstanding defenders of the Orthodox faith.

Saint Spyridon fell asleep in the Lord on December 12, AD 358, at the age of 88. His body has been preserved to this day.
