Today our Church celebrates the memory of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker. Saint Spyridon is one of the Church’s greatest fathers. He was born in AD 270 and lived a holy life. He had no formal education, but he possessed wisdom from God.
He became a defender of Orthodoxy at the First Ecumenical Council in AD 325. There, through the well-known miracle of the clay tile, he demonstrated that God is three Persons, in answer to the impious Arius. Saint Spyridon fell asleep in the Lord in AD 348. God glorified him, just as Saint Spyridon had glorified God through his life.
His sacred body has remained incorrupt for 1,652 years. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, his holy relics came to Corfu and were placed in several churches: the Church of Saint Lazarus, then the Church of Saint Nicholas in the Garitsa suburb. The Church of Saint Spyridon was built in 1570, and his sacred body has rested there ever since.
The faithful come every day in great numbers, especially the people of Corfu. For us, Saint Spyridon is a father and protector. He comforts us. We lay our pain and our troubles before his holy reliquary, and each of us receives an answer according to our faith.
May Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker give health to all people, and peace and joy to every heart, especially to those who govern. May God’s will prevail on earth, just as Saint Spyridon carried it out during his life. May the saint help us all.
