Saint Stylianos lived during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Great, in the second half of the fourth century and the beginning of the fifth. He came from Paphlagonia, a region of Asia Minor bordered by Pontus, Bithynia, Galatia, and the Black Sea.

His parents, Theodotos and Theophano, were devout, God-loving people who were also wealthy. They made sure he received a proper education, while raising him in true piety and virtue.

He could have been tempted to seek entertainment, travel, and show off his wealth, but our prudent saint chose another path. He embraced monastic life, following the example of many saints who had received the heavenly calling and the special gift of dedicating themselves entirely to Jesus Christ.

Let anyone called to walk this path do so, for complete dedication to God is no simple matter, nor is it achieved without hard struggle. The Lord’s counsel has guided men and women ever since to choose lifelong chastity.

Stylianos made that choice while still young. He lived the ascetic life alongside other brothers. Later he settled in a deserted place, where he made his home, his gaze turned toward heaven.

To support himself, he leaned on a staff. His fasting became proverbial: he ate only once a week, and then just a little raw cabbage. He also received the gift of healing and the grace to work miracles, in keeping with the Lord’s words: ‘Freely you have received; freely give.’

In many places, the New Testament tells us that the holy Apostles worked miracles, healing the sick and suffering. Their aim was always to glorify the name of God and help those who were healed and those who witnessed the miracle.

The teaching about the gifts that the Holy Spirit gave then and still gives now is especially clear: there are different kinds of gifts, but one and the same Spirit gives them. To one person the Spirit gives the gift of speaking with God; to another, a special strength of faith; and to another, the power to heal the sick.

All these are works of one and the same Spirit, who gives each person gifts as He wills. John Chrysostom explains that people who have the confidence of an earthly king can help those who turn to them. How much more can the saints help us, having gained confidence before the heavenly King through their own sufferings? Saint Stylianos, as we have said, was among those granted the gift of healing.

As his account in the Synaxarion relates, through his miraculous help people were freed from unclean spirits that tormented them and from every kind of illness. This strict ascetic also became a protector and guardian of infants.

At first, what is written in the Synaxarion of the Church of Constantinople may seem strange to us. It speaks of mothers who lost infants and of women without children, and refers to the Saint’s name and holy icon.

When death repeatedly took infants and left their mothers without children, those mothers could call upon the saint and have his revered icon painted. Through his intercessions, they could bear children again. This was also true of women who had suffered from childlessness.

Humility is the foundation of the virtues. Children, by nature, are more virtuous than even the greatest philosophers. In his love for them, Saint Stylianos followed the example of our Lord Jesus Christ, as the holy Evangelist Matthew relates.

People brought children to Jesus so that He might lay His hands on them and bless them. But He said, ‘Let the children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like them.’

like them.” After blessing the children, He went away. So the parents of Paphlagonia often came to Saint Stylianos, bringing their children to receive his blessing. This brought him great joy. God rewarded his holy love by granting him the gift of healing sick children.

So Saint Stylianos came to be known throughout the Church as a guardian of children. Yet, for all his boundless love for infants and their mothers, the strict ascetic found the crowds deeply disruptive. It had become very difficult for him to find the hesychia, the inner stillness a monk needs to give himself undistracted to prayer and his sacred work.

To meet this difficulty, he left his hermitage and withdrew farther into the wilderness, to a more remote and isolated place. He found a small cave and gave himself to greater spiritual discipline. He endured the winter cold with remarkable patience and, through overcoming the passions, rose to heights of contemplation. He received food from an angel, and wild beasts served him. We will turn here to an account in the Leimonarion concerning Saint Gerasimos of the Jordan.

One day, that great ascetic met a lion that was roaring in pain. A piece of reed had lodged in its paw, which had swollen and filled with pus. Saint Gerasimos cleaned the wound. Once the lion was healed, it did not leave him.

Saint Gerasimos marveled at the lion’s great gratitude and began feeding it bread and soaked legumes. Saint Stylianos had truly walked the narrow and difficult path, which leads to eternal life and which many wish to enter but will not be able to. At the end of his holy life, he felt as the Apostle Paul had shortly before leaving this world, when Paul wrote to his disciple, the Apostle Timothy: ‘The time has come for me to leave this world.’

‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now the crown of righteousness awaits me. The Lord will award it to me, and also to all who have loved His coming.’ The reward for the venerable saint’s great ascetic struggles was made manifest to him.
