Saint Sozon the Martyr came from Lycaonia in Cappadocia. He was born in the third century after Christ and was named Tarasios before he was baptized and became a Christian. Soon after his Baptism, he set aside his former name and took the name Sozon, so that at every moment he would remember our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was a shepherd, and he always carried Holy Scripture with him, reading it constantly. Through his own study, he came to know the truths of the Christian faith. Then he made it his care to share them with others whom he saw were hungry for spiritual nourishment.
So each day, many people began gathering in the pastures. They wanted to hear the teachings of the Gospel and meet this gentle man, whose virtues were so rare.
One day, while tending his flock, he came upon a spring with plenty of cool, flowing water. He sat in the shade of a tree and began reading the Holy Scripture he always carried with him.
After reading for a long time, he fell asleep and saw a vision. A divine figure approached him, gave him courage, and strengthened his devotion to God. At the same time, he heard a voice say, “This place will benefit many people, and the Holy Trinity will be glorified here.”
When he awoke, he understood that he must go to Pompeiopolis. He quickly made arrangements for his flock and went to the city, where pagan worship was flourishing. There he came to know the poor and the outcast, and he lived among them.
His tribulation was great, and his pain greater still. He had to find a way to ease their poverty, since he had no money of his own to help them directly. Then it occurred to him that the golden statues in the pagan temples might provide a way.
He entered a temple secretly and took the hand from a golden statue without anyone seeing him. He brought it to the market, sold it to a goldsmith, and received a considerable sum, which he distributed to the poor.
But when the missing piece of the statue was discovered, the matter was quickly reported to the authorities. They considered it a grave insult to their gods and decided that the few Christians in the city must be responsible.
So they began hunting the Christians down, arresting them, and putting them in prison. They treated them inhumanely and set up courts to try innocent people for sacrilege. These impious men believed they would please their gods by showing every possible cruelty to the poor people they had unjustly imprisoned.
When the young Sozon learned that innocent people were being arrested, imprisoned, and tortured for an act they knew nothing about, he went to the temple and told the guards what he had done. They arrested him and brought him before Maximian, the governor of Cilicia, to answer for his act.
Then the questioning began. With an arrogant air, the governor asked him, “How did you dare cut off the hand of a god?” Young Sozon replied, “What I did, Governor, is no crime. If your gods could speak, they would accuse you: you have abandoned the Creator of Heaven and Earth and turned to the false gods you worship.”
The governor’s patience ran out. He immediately ordered Saint Sozon to be tortured without mercy. They took the Saint and began tearing his flesh with iron claws. The martyr’s innocent blood poured out, and within moments he was lying in a pool of it.
Those watching marveled at the martyr’s apatheia, his freedom from the passions, even under torture. When the bloodthirsty tyrant saw this, he ordered them to put shoes lined with iron nails on the Saint’s feet and force him to run.
The Saint ran so easily that it seemed as though his feet were treading on feathers. The tyrant then began to mock him. He told Sozon that the goddess was willing to forgive him if he first apologized to her for what he had done.
But Sozon answered, “You want to humiliate me because the devil has stirred you up and made you his instrument. He is helping you fight against my Savior, Jesus Christ, who alone is the true God.”
The governor flew into a rage and immediately ordered the Saint to be whipped without mercy.
Then he ordered a fire to be lit so that whatever remained of the Saint’s body could be thrown into it. The executioners faithfully carried out the bloodthirsty tyrant’s commands. Sozon, the brave athlete of our Christ, prayed as he received the joy and fragrance rising from the flames.
Still praying, he gave up his holy soul in joy and gladness. As his martyr’s blood fell upon the earth like life-giving dew, Sozon surrendered his soul to God in a supernatural embrace.
The executioners lit a fire to burn what remained of his body. But a terrible storm broke out, extinguishing and scattering the flames. The faithful were then free to gather and care for his precious relics. A brilliant light guided them and shone until they had finished the burial.
It was September 7, and our Church commemorates him on that day.
