Summary

Psalm 105 recounts how the Israelites desired meat in the wilderness and tested God with their demands. They provoked Moses and Aaron, leading to the rebellion of Dathan and Abiram. The earth swallowed the rebels, and fire consumed others in their assembly. While Moses remained on Mount Sinai to receive the commandments, the people made and worshiped a golden calf at Horeb. The lecturer warns that people today can likewise forget God and seek happiness or security in other things. Israel forgot the God who had delivered them through wonders in Egypt and at the Red Sea.

We are back in Psalm 105, and we have reached verse 15. Here the psalmist briefly describes the Israelites’ poor response to God, who had done so many wonders for them. First, he mentions their sin of craving meat in the wilderness. People fast in the wilderness, yet they gave in to this craving.

“They tested God in a waterless place.” That was their second sin: they tested God. It was not that they had no water at all and were about to die of thirst. They wanted a great deal, as we see further on. “He gave them what they asked for and sent abundance into their souls.” As another passage says, the meat came out through their nostrils. You want these things? Then you shall have them. “They provoked Moses in the camp, and Aaron, the holy one of the Lord.” That is how they behaved there in the camp. They provoked Moses. This was their third sin.

They provoked Aaron as a way of striking at Moses. I will not read all of that here. I expect most of you have the Old Testament and can look it up for yourselves. In chapters 16 and 17 of Numbers, you can see exactly what happened: how they provoked Moses, and how they provoked Aaron, again to strike at Moses. Those chapters also tell us what happened next: “The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.” Abiram and Dathan rebelled.

They rebelled against Moses, and God was compelled, if we may put it that way, to punish them. The earth opened and swallowed both Dathan and Abiram. And that was not all: “Fire broke out among their company; the flame consumed sinners.” Fire also came upon the camp and consumed many people, if I remember correctly, beyond Dathan and Abiram. Please do read...

Numbers, chapters 16 and 17. And then there was the calf.

One sin followed another. They craved meat and such things. They wanted a great deal of water: that was the second sin. They rebelled against Moses and Aaron: the third sin. And now, “They made a calf at Horeb and worshiped the carved image.” As if all this were not enough, it happened there in the wilderness, one thing after another. Moses had gone up to the summit of Sinai, into the dark cloud and the smoke, to receive the commandments. He stayed there forty days, and that seemed far too long to them. They thought, “He is gone. What are we to do now? Let us make a god to lead us.”

They thought the God of Moses was gone, and so they made that carved calf at Horeb. Those of you who have been to Sinai may remember that, as you approach the monastery, just at the bend on the left, there is a small hill with a building on it. It is called Aaron’s Hill. They say that it was there that the people set up this calf, this idol, and worshiped it.

I think the Bedouins have something like a cemetery there. “They exchanged their glory for the likeness of a calf that eats grass.” They turned away from the true God, who was their glory, and made a god out of a calf that eats grass. What is a calf, even a living one? And this one was not even alive. They simply gathered materials and made it. This was a very grave sin. The others were sins too, but what can one say about this one? What can one say? Of course, when we hear or read these things, they sometimes seem almost unbelievable. How could these people act like that?

In our own way, we do similar things. We have some experience of God, and he reveals his truth to us, calls us to have him as our God, and helps us along that path. Yet something happens, and we forget. We may not make an idol, a calf, and worship it as though it were Christ, as though it were God. We may never say aloud, “I deny Christ.” But our whole way of life can show exactly that. We forget the Lord and sink down, losing ourselves in other things. We forget the Lord and begin to seek...

our salvation, our happiness, and our rest in other things—things that can sometimes be even worse than that lifeless calf. “They forgot God their savior, who had done great things in Egypt.” They forgot the God who had saved them and worked so many wonders for them while they were still in Egypt. “Wonders in the land of Ham, and fearful deeds at the Red Sea.” The Lord intervened miraculously many times while they were still in the land of Ham, in Egypt: the ten plagues and all the rest. And then there was the astonishing event at the Red Sea.

They were afraid the Egyptians would catch them at any moment, take them captive, kill them, or torture them. Yet the sea opened and they crossed over. They were saved, while their pursuers were engulfed by the waters. But I think we will stop here.

Μάλιστα νομίζω οι αυτοί, οι Βεδουίνοι, έχουν εκεί έτσι σαν νεκροταφείο. «Και ηλλάξαντο την δόξαν αυτών εν ομοιώματι μόσχου έσθοντος χόρτον». Και άλλαξαν τον αληθινό Θεό, που ήταν η δόξα τους, και έκαναν Θεό ένα μοσχάρι που τρώει χόρτο. Τι είναι ένα μοσχάρι, και ζωντανό να είναι, που αυτό ούτε ζωντανό δεν ήταν, απλώς μάζεψαν υλικά και έφτιαξαν ένα μοσχάρι. Αυτό ήταν πολύ μεγάλη αμαρτία, και οι άλλες, αυτή εδώ η αμαρτία που τι να πει κανείς; Τι να πει; Και βέβαια τα ακούμε αυτά, τα διαβάζουμε, καμιά φορά μας φαίνονται και λίγο απίστευτα. Καλά, πώς αυτός ο λαός ενεργούσε έτσι;
