Summary

After crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites praised God for saving them from their pursuers. They soon forgot His works and failed to endure His will through hardship. The lecturer urges Christians to carry their own crosses with patience and trust that God leads them toward salvation. Israel’s craving for Egyptian food in the wilderness shows how desire can overcome self-discipline; Great Lent offers Christians a similar lesson in restraint. When the people grumbled over water, they tested God instead of accepting the hardship before them. God granted their requests for food and water, but the lecturer warns that receiving what one asks for does not prove divine approval. The rich man and Lazarus, and Esau’s exchange of his birthright, illustrate the danger of sacrificing eternal good for immediate satisfaction.

It has been a long time since we left the Psalms, so today we ought to move on a little. We are in Psalm 105. Here, too, the Psalmist describes how little faith the Israelites showed in the face of all the wonders God worked for them. We had reached verse 12, where he speaks of the crossing of the Red Sea. For a moment they seemed to be in danger, yet God saved them. They crossed the sea, and when their pursuers followed, the waters closed over them and they drowned.

As they crossed the Red Sea, they saw that they had been saved from certain death: the men coming to kill them had drowned.

So they sang hymns and gave glory to God. All of them sang to Him, men and women alike. But from verse 13 onward comes another reproach: “They quickly forgot His works.” Very quickly! They did not even let a little time pass. They forgot what God had done and how He had brought them out of Egypt.

He led them through the Red Sea and destroyed their enemies, and they forgot it all. What can one say? These things really happened; no one can deny them. Yet this stiff-necked people forgot at once, as though God had done nothing for them.

It was as though they could not see that God was with them, leading them and saving them in a wondrous way. “They quickly forgot His works; they did not endure His counsel.” And Father Joel translates this as follows:

“They did not have the patience, in their afflictions, to see what the Lord’s counsel was.” I think we said that we should look at this a little differently as well. Yes, they did not have the patience to see, amid their afflictions, what the Lord’s counsel was, what God’s will was. But perhaps it would be truer, more accurate, to hear the words “they did not endure His counsel” this way: what happened was God’s will, and so was what would happen next. They had to learn to endure His will and accept every difficulty and affliction. That is the will of God which they did not endure. And to bring this home to ourselves, our whole life is encompassed by God’s counsel. God already has a will for each of us. What that will holds, no one knows. But we must endure it, rather than grow troubled, take offense, or even turn against God.

Are we so different? We are no different from the Israelites. Do we not see what is before us? We live in the Church, which is a miracle. We live in the Christian truth, which is a miracle. God dwells within us, and that is a miracle. Yet we quickly forget all this when afflictions come. God has ordered these things according to His will because we need them. We quickly take offense and forget; we lose our patient endurance and, with it, our spiritual reward.

So we must learn this deeper truth and live by it: each of us must live the life God has appointed for us. What that life will be, He knows. It will become clear as we go. Each of us has our own suffering,

our own cross to bear. We must bear whatever God wills for us with patient endurance, steadfastness, and trust in Him, certain that the Lord will bring us through in the end and lead us to salvation. All these things are meant to save us. “They quickly forgot His works; they did not endure His counsel. They craved a craving in the wilderness and tested God in a waterless place.” Because they were so quick to forget, their sins began. The first was this: “They craved a craving in the wilderness.”

The Psalmist says “in the wilderness.” He hardly needs to tell us where it happened, but the words have a deeper meaning too. You are in the wilderness. And why are you there? To undertake ascetic discipline, to go without things, to feel the lack of some comforts and let them fade from your thoughts. To be hungry and thirsty. You are in the wilderness! Yet that was precisely when they gave in to craving. They remembered the food they had eaten in Egypt. The account says plainly that they longed intensely for the food of Egypt. That was their first failing: they craved a craving in the wilderness.

They wanted to eat. They were a people with very little endurance, with very little discipline. It was more than disobedience to Moses: they could not discipline themselves before God. We see the same thing in many Christians. The moment they might have to go without something or face a difficulty, anxiety and strong desire take hold. Sometimes this happens at the very time when we are called to go without. Great Lent, for example, is a spiritual wilderness in which we are called to know hunger, thirst, and other forms of deprivation. Many Christians lack endurance. So, “they craved a craving in the wilderness and tested God in a waterless place.” They tested God when there was no water: as we know, they began to grumble and cry out. Here the Psalmist is certainly referring to the water Moses gave them in the wilderness,

from the rock. But it did not happen only then. The Psalmist is speaking more generally, to show that

they did not bring themselves into accord with God’s will. They neither obeyed it nor considered what it was, so that they might endure it. Instead, they were led by whatever their hearts desired. “They craved a craving in the wilderness and tested God in a waterless place. And He gave them what they asked for and sent satiety into their souls.” God yielded to them, as He so often does. But that does not mean it was for their benefit. Even with Thomas, Christ graciously met him where he was and said, “Come,

put your finger into the marks of the nails, and put your hand into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Yet the Lord does not commend Thomas for needing this. He says, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” He granted what Thomas needed in his weakness. In the same way, God gave the Israelites food, even more than they asked for. He “sent satiety into their souls”: meat, quail, and all the rest, and plenty of the water they needed in the wilderness.

So some people fail to notice what this means. I often hear them say, “God never refuses me. God loves me. Whatever we ask of Him, He gives us.” They take pride in it and boast about it. But it is no cause for boasting.

God may grant your request because you are weak, so that you cannot claim He does not love you. He gives as He sees fit. One person may cry out again and again and receive nothing; another may ask only briefly and receive what he wants. We must not conclude that God is absent from the one who receives nothing, or that He is pleased with the one who receives what he asks for. I remember something from where I grew up. Perhaps you remember such things too. I do not know whether it happened elsewhere, but in our area, when people were poor, you would sometimes see

a little child crying all day because he knew his mother had a bit of cheese, or some pork, or something else put away. “Give me some of that! I want some of that!” The poor woman was saving it for another day, for a better time. But he kept whining until his parents could bear it no longer. Then she would give it to him, almost stuffing it into his mouth, if I may put it that way. We had a local expression for that, but you would not understand it, so I had better leave it. Well then, eat it! I do not hear anyone whispering the expression. You do not know it. Thank you.

Well...

Yes, God dealt with them somewhat like that: “Go on, eat. You want meat? Have meat. You want water? Have water as well.” But God wanted them to endure a little lack of meat, food, and water. They did have some water to drink, but they wanted plenty. “You want that much? Then take that much.” We should remember this. I do not think we would be wrong to say that God sometimes gives a person riches: “You want riches? Have riches.” That does not mean God favors that person. It is we, in our narrowness, who draw such conclusions. This life will end, another life will come, and we will see that things are different there.

Think of poor Lazarus and the rich man in the parable told by the Lord Himself. What could seem worse than Lazarus’s lot? Yet Lazarus departed this life, the rich man died too, and at once their circumstances changed. God gives us this life to prepare for eternity. Our pleas do not mislead Him into caring only for our life here while we lose the life to come. Still, because God is always good, He gives some people riches: “This is what you want? Then have it. Have your fill, but do not expect anything more.” That is why we see cases like the rich man’s. The Lord has Abraham speak to him and say, “You received your good things

And Lazarus likewise received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in anguish.” That is how he puts it. “You enjoyed them; you asked me, and I gave them to you, so that you would have no complaint that I had them but paid you no attention. But that is all. Nothing else for you.” And the truth is that many people make such a sacrifice. Esau gave up his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of lentils. These things happen. So let us be watchful, lest we become trapped by our own selves and our desires, make grave mistakes, and lose our souls. I will continue from where we left off last time.
