Summary
Psalm 104 recalls God sending Moses and choosing Aaron to lead Israel out of Egypt. God entrusted Moses with guiding the people and conveying divine truth, despite his difficulty speaking. Aaron’s eloquence helped Moses when they were sent to confront Pharaoh and perform signs. The lecturer compares their roles with those of Paul and Barnabas at Lystra. Eloquent speech has its place, but the truth of God can be revealed through simple words and actions. The Gospel of John illustrates this principle through its plain language and spiritual depth.

We had reached verse 25 of Psalm 104. From verse 26 through verse 38, the psalm speaks about the departure from Egypt. It begins: “He sent Moses His servant, and Aaron whom He had chosen.” God decided to bring His people out of Egypt. He sent Moses to carry out this work and chose Aaron to help him. As we know from the Old Testament, Moses was the one who led the people. God entrusted this work to him, found him pleasing to His heart, and showed him favor. How many mysteries God revealed to Moses, and how much Moses was granted the grace to experience! Yet, for all that, Moses was slow of speech.
Slow of speech—and still he was God’s instrument. Through him God spoke the truth and guided the people. I do not mean simply telling them where to go. Through Moses, God’s truth was passed on to the people and gave them light. Yet Moses was slow of speech, and God left him that way. Aaron was eloquent, but his role was to help Moses. Remember when God sent Moses from the land of Midian, at Sinai, to bring the people out and speak to Pharaoh. Moses asked, “How can I go? What shall I say?” God told him, “Aaron will go with you. You will do what I tell you and perform the signs and wonders before Pharaoh: you will throw down your staff, it will become a snake, and when you take hold of it again, it will become a staff.” Aaron had the gift of speech. We see something similar with the Apostle Paul and Barnabas at Lystra, I think, in Asia Minor. There, people seemed to favor Barnabas because his speech made a stronger impression; he was more eloquent.
It was to the Apostle Paul that God entrusted the fullness of His truth. That does not mean He did not entrust it to the Apostle Barnabas as well, but Paul was the leader. This is especially clear in the case of Moses and Aaron. So let us pay attention: the essential thing is not eloquence, whatever human eloquence a person may have. God gives that gift too, and it has its place. The essential thing is God’s truth. And God’s truth often loves to reveal itself through very simple words and very simple actions.
Take the Gospel according to John. I think we have spoken about this before. If we judge it by the rules of Greek, we might find quite a few faults in its plain language, if I may put it that way. And yet it is the most spiritual Gospel. In earlier times, some called the first three Gospels the bodily Gospels, and the Gospel according to John the spiritual Gospel. We will speak about this more fully next time.
