Summary
The lecture recalls Psalm 103:13–18 and introduces a deeper spiritual reading of its imagery. In a story from the Gerontikon, a desert elder sees spring growth as an image of the soul flourishing when the Holy Spirit gives grace. The elder’s response illustrates how spiritual insight can turn an ordinary conversation toward what benefits the soul. Christ likewise speaks truth directly, even when people approach him with questions or self-serving hopes. After feeding the crowd, Christ urges those seeking him to pursue lasting spiritual food rather than another meal. Christ’s conversation with the Samaritan woman shows how he gradually reveals the truth and offers living water leading to eternal life. The apostles and later saints followed Christ’s example; the speaker postpones the fuller reading of the psalm until the next lecture.

Remember.
Last time, that is, at our previous gathering, we looked at verses 13 through 18 of Psalm 103.
We began by interpreting them in a straightforward, literal way, you might say.
I think we promised that today we would try to go a little deeper into the spiritual meaning of these verses.
To help us understand them better, let me remind you of something said in the Gerontikon. I expect you have all come across it and read it. I hope I can convey the spirit and meaning of the saying as I remember it now. I cannot recall its exact words.
Well, there was an elder who
looked at everything, in every situation, from a spiritual point of view. Some of the others in the desert found this hard to take. They looked for a chance to get this elder to talk about things simply as they were, without drawing out anything spiritual. He was sitting near what may have been a little ravine. It was springtime.
The places where those fathers lived did not have much vegetation, as our part of the world does, and some other places even more so. But this ravine apparently had some growth. In front of them were shrubs we might call chaste trees.
As far as I know, weeping willows are one thing, while these willow-like shrubs, the chaste trees, are another. They looked rather like weeping willows. I remember from childhood how, in spring, they send out new shoots that grow quickly and become long. They are sturdy on the one hand, but flexible on the other, and people use them. Those living in the desert made use of these shrubs in ways suited to their life there.
They make hampers, baskets, and even mats, for example.
So the others, wanting to tease the elder, said to him, “We have had a great deal of rain this year. We will have plenty of good branches to make mats and things like that.” Strictly speaking, the plants used for those mats were a little different from the willow-like shrubs I have mentioned.
They expected the elder to say, “Yes, the shrubs have put out new shoots this year. With so much rain, everything is growing abundantly, so we can make as many of the things we need as possible.” They used these things themselves, but mainly sold them to earn their bread, so that no one would eat the bread of idleness. That is an established principle in the desert and in Christian life generally: no one should eat the bread of idleness. We should always keep that in mind. They expected the elder to say something like that. Instead he said, “Yes, yes, brothers, when rain falls upon the soul, when the
Holy Spirit rains upon it, that is, when grace comes to the soul, abundant grace, then the soul puts forth new growth and blossoms. It becomes beautiful and flourishes, growing and making progress.” Then he stopped. He said nothing more, and they all saw that they had failed to draw him into their way of thinking. Once again, the elder spoke as the Spirit of God had illumined him.
Before we go on, perhaps we should remember the Lord. Everything begins with the Lord. Saintly people follow His example. He inspires and helps them, and later saints follow the example of earlier ones. The Lord Himself was never drawn into mere talk. However people questioned Him, whether they meant to test Him, trap Him, or something else, He always told them what they needed to hear.
He never tried to win their approval or say something merely to please them. Let me return to an example we have mentioned before. When He multiplied the loaves in the wilderness, it happened across the lake from Tiberias and, broadly speaking, from Capernaum as well. After nightfall, He sent His disciples by boat toward Capernaum, while He stayed behind and went up the mountain to pray. The boat the disciples boarded was the last one there. There was no other boat, and they set off for the other side of the lake.
A storm caught them. The Lord appeared, walking on the water, and they were afraid. In the end they reached land. The next day, the people who had eaten the food the Lord provided when He miraculously multiplied the loaves and fishes came looking for Him. They were the very people He had fed.
And they had eaten their fill. We know that God sends rain upon the righteous and the unrighteous and makes the sun rise upon the evil and the good. There, too, the Lord gave everyone food. He did not say, “You may eat, but you may not; you deserve to eat, but you do not; you are good, but you are not.” He fed them all.
There is a distinction here. Material things are given to everyone. Spiritual gifts are not received by everyone, because some do not want them, though God offers them. So the next morning, it seems, those people remembered how well they had eaten the day before. When they could not find the Lord, they went after Him, hoping He might feed them again. They learned that He had gone, and they walked around the lake, crossed the Jordan where it flows into the Sea of Tiberias, and came to Capernaum. They found the Lord somewhere along the shore, perhaps a little farther west, and asked Him, “When did You come here, Lord?”
You see, they had noticed that there was no other boat. Only the disciples had left in the one boat they saw. The Lord had not gone with them, so they wondered how He had arrived. But the Lord did not stop to explain. Nor did He choose His words out of fear that He might upset them. Today, perhaps, we would see this as a good chance to say a few pleasant things, careful not to offend or upset them. We might even hold back the truth just to keep them close. The Lord never does that, here or anywhere else. He says to them, “You are looking for Me because you ate yesterday. That is why you seek Me. Do not seek food that perishes; seek the food that endures.” In other words, if you have come to find Me...
Listen carefully to what I say. Accept the truth and receive the spiritual food that enters a person, nourishes that person, and enables them to live forever. As He told the Samaritan woman, whoever drinks from this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst. At first the Samaritan woman did not understand. But little by little, as the Lord continued speaking with her, He did not hide the truth or try to flatter her. Whatever she had done, whoever she was, however she had lived, deep within her soul she longed for God and for the truth. The Lord saw this and, I repeat, did not tell her merely what she wanted to hear.
Little by little, he reveals it to her. The Samaritan woman accepts the truth and truly receives that living water, which becomes a spring welling up within the soul unto eternal life. As that living water dwells within, it gives a person the assurance that this is eternal life and leads that person toward eternal life. So it was not only that abba, that elder in the desert, who strove to avoid pointless talk and idle words that merely satisfied someone’s curiosity. He always saw things spiritually, through the Spirit of God, in a way that would...
...edify both himself and those who listened to him. And he was not the only one. The Lord had acted this way first. This was how he spoke and how he dealt with those who came to him. He never tried to please anyone, deceive anyone, or keep anyone near him by force or by lies. He told everyone the truth, as true God and true man, without seeking to wound them, yet without softening the truth to suit them. If that truth itself caused someone to leave, it was because that person wanted to go, not because the Lord drove them away. The Lord was the first to think and act this way.
He acted this way throughout his life. The Apostles followed his example, and so did the Martyrs and, after them, the holy ascetics, those who withdrew from the world, the desert dwellers, those who lived in monastic communities, and every other Christian who wishes truly to follow the Lord’s example. This introduction was needed before we could speak about these verses. But it seems our time is up, so we will stop here for today and continue next Saturday.
