Summary

The lecture continues Psalm 96 with its third verse, where fire goes before God and consumes His enemies. The same divine presence brings light and warmth to some, but is experienced as consuming fire by those who oppose God. The psalmist’s image teaches that no enemy can withstand God, even when evil appears to prevail for a time. The speaker points to the two witnesses, whose deaths at the hands of the Antichrist will seem like a victory for evil. Christ’s death on the Cross reveals the deeper pattern: at the moment of apparent defeat, He overcame death and the devil. Christians are urged to be patient and remain with Christ when evil seems to prevail in their own lives.

We are in Psalm 96. As we said, it has twelve verses. Verses one through six form the first part, and verses seven through twelve the second. We began the first part and looked at the first two verses: “The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad. Cloud and darkness surround Him; righteousness and judgment uphold His throne.” Last time, I think we said quite a bit about the darkness too. Now we move to the third verse. In these first three verses, we have the theophany itself: God’s appearance. The third verse says:

“Fire goes before Him and burns up His enemies all around.” Yes, God appears, but fire goes before Him and burns the enemies surrounding Him. God is light, and as light He shines and gives warmth. When He is experienced as fire, it is not because God changes from one thing to another. The same God is light and illumination to some.

He is warmth to them, but to others He is fire that burns. God is a consuming fire. God is a consuming fire. When we hear that God is fire, this is the fire revealed to those who stand against Him. “Fire goes before Him.” This verse speaks of God making Himself known, of His appearing. As God appears, no enemy can stand before Him, because the consuming fire goes ahead of Him. It consumes anyone who opposes God, anyone who makes himself God’s enemy. “And burns up His enemies all around”: here, the flames burn them.

These are the enemies around Him. With this verse, the Psalmist wants to stress that God is God. No one can take on God. No one. He uses familiar images that people can understand. Once a fire takes hold, who can stop it? Who can stand against it? So let no one dare to take on God. And let us not imagine that some people can do whatever they please and God can do nothing about it.

We must be longsuffering, endure patiently, and wait until God chooses to reveal Himself. We may see this very clearly if God orders things so that we live in the days just before the Second Coming. His own people, the two prophets, will come to enlighten the people. Yet in the end it will seem that they are not merely defeated but killed by the Antichrist and his followers. Yes, that is how it appears. We should understand this pattern: it has always been so, and we see it especially in Christ.

At first, evil seems to win. The enemy of God seems to win; sin seems to win. That is how it looks. But at the very moment evil is ready to celebrate its triumph, it is utterly defeated. We see this above all in Christ. The same pattern is found in all the Saints, in all who belong to Christ, in His Apostles, and so on. When the devil finally managed to bring Christ to the Cross and to death, he thought it was his greatest day, his greatest moment. He thought he had achieved everything.

But at that very moment, as Christ was dying—the devil wanted not only to put Him on the Cross but to see Him die and disappear—Christ met death. By His own death, He was destroying death and the devil. He abolished death and trampled down the devil. That was the devil’s greatest defeat, his final defeat, so to speak. We need to know this so that we never lose heart. If we look carefully at our own lives, I think we can all find a time when, although we were with God and believed in Him, it seemed that the forces of evil had succeeded.

It may have seemed that evil had gained the upper hand completely. Yet at that very moment, God turned things around in a wondrous, miraculous way, and what He wanted came to pass. That is how it will be in the future as well. Yes, if we are not Christians, and if we do not know what it means to be a Christian, what the Christian life means, or what the spiritual life means, we need to learn and know these things. There is a strange thing we see: goodhearted Christians want to grow spiritually and live as Christians, but because they do not understand how things work, they repeatedly feel overwhelmed and confused. They sink into despair and suffer great harm. We must not lose Christ. It does not matter if it seems that we are losing everything. Let it seem that evil is gaining the upper hand, even precisely because we belong to Christ.

That is how it may seem. But in the end Christ will be there: Christ in us, and we belonging to Him. That is what matters.

Shall we stop here? Will you forgive me, or hold it against me? I’m feeling a little tired.
