Summary
Psalm 95 turns from calling Israel to praise God to inviting every nation to offer Him glory and honor. The speaker urges people to worship their Creator, warning that pride and misplaced desires draw them away from the truth. The psalm’s call to bring sacrifices into God’s courts recalls worship at Zion after the return from Babylonian captivity. Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross fulfills the earlier sacrifices and is offered without bloodshed in the Divine Liturgy. To share in Christ’s sacrifice, believers must offer themselves, especially by surrendering their ego and will when obedience is difficult. The psalm’s proclamation that the Lord reigns is understood through Christ’s Cross and Resurrection, which renew the world and give those united to Him stability. The lecture closes with God’s just judgment of all people and Paul’s call for everyone to repent.

We are in Psalm 95. The psalm has three parts. We have looked at the first, and now we move to the second. The first runs from verse 1 to verse 6, and the second from verse 7 to verse 10. In the first part, the Israelites are invited to glorify God. In the second, the psalmist addresses the nations. Let us take a quick look: “Bring to the Lord, you families of the nations; bring to the Lord glory and honor.” He has finished inviting the people of Israel, God’s chosen people, with the words, “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; proclaim His salvation day after day,” and so on.
Now the nations in particular are invited: “Bring to the Lord, you families of the nations.” All the nations, all their families, are called to come and offer something to the Lord. “Bring to the Lord glory and honor”: offer Him praise, respect, honor, and reverence.
This is what every person needs to do: come to the Lord, worship Him, respect Him, show Him reverence, glorify Him, and sing His praise. Yet people have no desire to do this. To get the pleasure they want, they will lower themselves to the dust, become like a worm, if that is what it takes. But they think it beneath their dignity, an insult to their person, to approach God in worship and kneel before Him.
A creature should glorify and praise his Creator. How far we are from living rightly, from being as we ought to be! We should begin to take this very seriously. I do not mean that we should worry so much about what God will do. God will find a way to set on His path those who are willing. But the fact remains that people in general have lost their way. As we have said before, it is not simply that people sin. Their whole way of thinking is mistaken, far from the truth and from reality. And what will happen? Even young children...
They grow up and are taught in this same spirit. Let us pray that God finds a way to bring us out of this error and set us on His path. So, “Bring to the Lord, you families of the nations; bring to the Lord glory and honor.” Then, for a third time, “bring”: “Bring to the Lord the glory due His name. Take up sacrifices and enter His courts.” In other words, do not come empty-handed. In those days, people offered sacrifices, as was customary in Israel as well as among the other nations. There were offerings without bloodshed, and above all, blood sacrifices. The offerings without bloodshed were fruits of the harvest, for example.
They offered grain and other crops, as the nations did, or fruit from the trees, and so forth. These were offerings without bloodshed. But most sacrifices involved blood: people offered animals, slaughtering them—that is why they were called blood sacrifices—placing them on the altar and burning them. So the nations are called to give glory to the Lord’s name and to bring their offerings into God’s temple, into His courts.
That is the sacred place where, in a certain way, God dwells on earth as well as in heaven. The psalm is calling all the nations to come here, to Zion. Here is the place where God rests; here are His courts. As we said, this psalm was sung when the people returned from the Babylonian captivity. They rebuilt—or rather repaired—the walls, restored the gates, and everything was ready again. So first the people of Israel, and then the nations too, are called to worship God and bring their sacrifices. Notice this...
This was how people could understand worship. God knew what He was doing when He told the Hebrews, too, to offer blood sacrifices. Now we have Christ’s one sacrifice, His unique sacrifice. Once, He offered it in blood: the Lord offered His own blood. Now that same sacrifice is offered without bloodshed.
And all the other sacrifices have been brought to an end.
But although Christ was crucified, we too must be crucified with Him in order to be saved. There is only one sacrifice with any saving power: the sacrifice of Christ,
the Cross of Christ. Yet you must be crucified with Christ to be saved. You too must offer yourself, for Christ’s sacrifice is precisely His offering of Himself. Offer yourself in Christ, so that you may share in His sacrifice. It is not simply a matter of saying, “Christ died, so we will die too.” Without Christ’s sacrifice, our own sacrifice has no value. Without Christ’s death, our own death has no value.
But the fact that Christ was crucified is not enough by itself. Nor is it enough simply that He was sacrificed, or that He offered Himself as a sacrifice and is offered in the Divine Liturgy: “You are the One who offers and is offered, who receives and is distributed.” This is what the priest prays.
At that moment, Christ our Lord, You are the sacrifice. You are also the One who offers it through the priest, and You are the God who receives it. But to share in this sacrifice of Christ, we cannot merely go through the outward form of the Mystery, merely be there in person. We must...
We cannot simply go and receive Holy Communion as an outward formality. We must be ready to offer ourselves within Christ’s sacrifice. Then our offering will be accepted, pleasing to God, and saving for us.
When we go to the Divine Liturgy, and especially when we go to receive Holy Communion, this should be our first and foremost disposition: we are ready to be crucified with Christ, to sacrifice our ego, our own will, and the old self. Our relationship with God still has this character of sacrifice. It is not enough just to hear what God says and do a few things. You will never do God’s will, please Him, or become what He wants you to be unless you have within you this spirit of offering yourself. The reason we do not grow spiritually, even though we have good intentions,
is that we leave sacrifice out. We believe in the Cross of Christ—who does not? But we do not believe in the sense of joining our own sacrifice to His, so that God truly accepts our offering of ourselves and makes us what He wants us to be. Instead, we believe that Christ died for us and saved us, and we stop there. That is not enough. If certain things are missing, we are outside the truth. For example, we need to live with the knowledge that our time here is temporary. We need to feel it within ourselves: we are passing through this world. Our permanent home is elsewhere. And the spirit of sacrifice needs to be present in our lives, in our whole disposition, in everything we do. It strikes me how, the moment we meet a difficulty, we lose heart and give up. But that is precisely the moment to make a sacrifice. Why is it difficult? Because God’s truth, His will, His commandment, comes up against our own will and our ego. That is what makes it hard. If you have a spirit of sacrifice, you will sacrifice your ego, your will, and your resistance.
Show that willingness. God knows when it will become action. Unless we understand these things, we will live the Christian life only on the surface, and it will not truly be a Christian life. That is why we can be Christians for so many years without the heart and reality of spiritual life taking root deep within us, without our lives bearing even the fragrance of holiness. We remain with outward things.
So, bring sacrifices into His courts. Listen: “Worship the Lord in His holy court; let all the earth be shaken before Him.” Come, then, and worship in the Lord’s court. Here, “let all the earth be shaken” has a good meaning: let humanity wake up, be stirred, come alive before God, and let the whole earth come to worship the Lord. “Say among the nations: The Lord reigns. He has established the world, which shall not be shaken; He will judge the peoples with justice.” Yes, let it be known among the nations: the Lord reigns.
Some early writers—Tertullian, Lactantius, and Augustine, the Latin writers—read this passage as, “The Lord reigns from the wood.” They took the wood to mean the Cross: by ascending the Cross, the Lord came to reign as King of the world. That is the meaning.
The words “from the wood” are not in the text. Those writers read them elsewhere or assumed they belonged here. In any case, the Lord came to reign over the world through the Cross and the Resurrection. So tell the nations; let the nations know: “The Lord reigns, and He has set the world firm.” He has raised the world up again. This certainly points
to what the Lord would do in the future: to the age of Christ, the age of the Messiah, the new age in which He would reign over the whole world and restore it. “It shall not be shaken.” From then on, it will stand firm. We could say that God intended to become man, and He did. He preached and revealed the truth. He ascended the Cross, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and came to reign. Through all this He raised the world up, made it anew, and renewed it. “It shall not be shaken”—that means...
It means that anyone who receives these things in faith, relies on Christ, and is united with Christ will stand firm from then on. Such a person has nothing to fear. The whole world can know this and live this way. If we do, then it shall not be shaken. The psalm goes on: “He will judge the peoples with uprightness.” God will judge the peoples justly. The Lord is upright and true; He will wrong no one. And it says “He will judge” because a day of judgment is coming. Perhaps this is what the Apostle Paul also speaks of when addressing the Athenians. After all that he had said,
he told them, “God overlooked the times of ignorance, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a man through whom He will judge.” So the Apostle speaks of judgment too. He leaves nothing out; in a few words, he tells them everything. Was this not the God they sought, the God your philosophers were trying to reach? Well, this God has come. The true God has come and lived among us. He rose from the dead, and now He calls people to repentance so that He may save them all. But the day of judgment is also coming, when God will judge the world. It will not simply be left to each person to do as they please. Since all are God's creatures, in the end God will
judge His creatures and set each person's affairs in order without wronging anyone. We will stop here and continue next time.
