Summary
The psalmist draws on his own experience in Psalm 93:16–19 to encourage the faithful. When threatened by those who practice evil, he asks who will stand beside him and finds his answer in the Lord. He recalls that without God’s help, his life would have ended and his soul would have descended to Hades. Whenever he felt his footing give way, the Lord’s mercy sustained him. God’s consolations brought joy to his soul in proportion to the pain in his heart. The lecturer warns that doubt and weak faith can keep Christians from recognizing these blessings, and urges them to rely on the Lord. He says God preserves life and leads people toward Himself, while human consent allows His work to take deeper root. Drawing on the Apostle Paul, he teaches that trials do not exceed what one can bear and that God’s consolation meets the depth of one’s suffering.

Briefly, let us spend a little time with the Psalter too, before we leave. We are still on Psalm 93. We have looked at the first three parts, and now we come to the fourth, verses 16 through 19. Here the psalmist speaks from his own experience to console the faithful.
He speaks of the experience God gives His people, through which they find consolation, so that he may help others too: “Who will rise up for me against evildoers? Who will stand beside me against those who work lawlessness? If the Lord had not helped me, my soul would soon have dwelt in Hades. When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ Your mercy, O Lord, helped me. O Lord, according to the multitude of sorrows in my heart, Your consolations brought joy to my soul.” Those are the verses. And here the psalmist asks, “Who will rise up for me against evildoers?” Who, in other words, will be there...
when I am facing wicked people and am in danger? Who will come forward and stand with me, to support and strengthen me? The answer, of course, is God. Only God can do this; it is beyond human help. “Who will stand beside me against those who work lawlessness?” Again, who will stand beside me? The second half of the verse says the same thing in different words: Who will stand with me, strengthen me, support me, help me, and console me as those who work lawlessness surround me? God, of course. “If the Lord had not helped me, my soul would soon have dwelt in Hades.” Here he is speaking of the past.
If the Lord had not helped me at such times, my soul would have been on the verge of dwelling in Hades. I would have been killed. I would have died; I would have been gone. These are lived experiences. The psalmist is not writing this just to finish off a poem and make it sound beautiful, as a poet might. Poets do sometimes try to express what they have lived through, but they are also concerned with making a good poem, with the impression it will make, and with giving it a beginning, a subject, and an ending. That is not what the psalmist is doing here. He is telling the truth, from his own experience.
He would have perished many times if the Lord had not helped him. “When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ Your mercy, O Lord, helped me.” Each time I cried, “My God, my God, the ground is giving way beneath my feet. I am going to fall; I am losing my footing,” Your mercy, O Lord, helped me. “O Lord, according to the multitude of sorrows in my heart, Your consolations brought joy to my soul.” How beautiful that is. Lord, Your consolations matched the anguish in my heart, its wounds and all its pain. Whatever the circumstance, You sent the consolation I needed. Your own particular comforts came to me, and
they gladdened my soul, gave it comfort, and filled it with joy. These things are true. But now two things go wrong. First, because we do not live this way or believe it this way, we deprive ourselves of all these blessings from God. Second, we read these words without having experienced them ourselves, and weak faith and doubt rush into our souls. I do not know whether many Christians today are free of that spirit of doubt and weak faith. In our doubt we ask, “Is it really so, or is that simply what is written?”
As we have said before, some people will go so far as to say, “Yes, it was like that once, but it is not like that now.” I mean that it is always like that. Always. Let us rely on the Lord, on the Lord, and on no one else. Let Him stand beside us and walk with us. And notice this: if we are alive today, if we exist at all, it is because... I do not know what each of you would say. Sometimes I look back over my own life and think how many times I came within a hair’s breadth of death. I would not be alive if God had not arranged for me to live until today. The point is not whether we might have died earlier. God has kept us until now to give us these years, so that all the work we spoke of earlier might take place. That work...
takes only a few years in some people, and then God takes them; in others it takes much longer. It is God who has given us life. But above all, above all, the point is not that He kept us alive when we might have perished, but that God has set us on the path and continues to guide us on His path. He wants to make us His own. Are we the ones doing this? We keep getting in the way. We give a halfhearted yes and barely let God enter our lives. If we were more willing and gave Him our consent wholeheartedly, how different things would look. And above all, consider this last point. As the Apostle Paul says, temptations are always measured according to what we can bear.
Never, never are they beyond what we can bear. The temptations, difficulties, and sufferings that come seem heavier to us. They are never more than we can bear. The consolation that comes from God is also always proportionate to how deeply we have been grieved, how badly we have been wounded, how much we have suffered, and how much we have missed His sweet presence. I will stop here for now, and we will continue next Saturday.

εύφραιναν και ευχαριστούσαν την ψυχή μου και χαροποιούσαν την ψυχή μου. Αυτά είναι αλήθειες. Είναι αλήθειες, αλλά τι γίνεται τώρα; Γίνονται δυο κακά. Το ένα μέρος, καθώς δεν τα ζούμε έτσι τα πράγματα, δεν τα πιστεύουμε έτσι, φυσικά στερούμεθα όλες αυτές τις ευλογίες του Θεού. Και από το άλλο μέρος, τα διαβάζουμε αυτά, πείραν αυτών δεν έχουμε εμείς, οπότε ορμά μέσα στην ψυχή μας η ολιγοπιστία, η αμφιβολία. Δεν ξέρω αν υπάρχουν πολλοί χριστιανοί σήμερα οι οποίοι δεν έχουν αυτό το πνεύμα της αμφιβολίας μέσα τους και αυτό το πνεύμα της ολιγοπιστίας. Στην αμφιβολία σου: είναι άραγε έτσι ή γράφονται έτσι;
