Summary

The lecture turns to Psalm 91:5–10 to explain why God deserves praise. God’s works bring joy and invite reflection on the depth of his wisdom and purpose. A close look at a restored icon illustrates how much lies beneath what the eye first sees. The speaker says that those who reject God fail to understand his works and purposes. The psalm compares the apparent growth of sinners to grass that quickly disappears, while God endures forever. Unlike those who devote themselves to worldly success, the faithful inherit the Kingdom of God.

If you will give me leave, let us spend a few minutes with the Psalms. I am at Psalm 91. We looked at the opening verses, the first stanza, which tells us that it is good to praise God. The second stanza, verses 5 through 10, tells us why we should praise Him. We had begun with this: “You have gladdened me, O Lord, by Your creation, and I will rejoice in the works of Your hands.” We looked at that verse last time. “How great are Your works, O Lord! Your thoughts are very deep.” You gladden me, O Lord, with Your creations and with the works of Your hands.

Great are Your works, O Lord, and very deep are Your thoughts. We look at God’s works and marvel. Another psalm says it too: “How great are Your works, O Lord!” We marvel at the works of God.

Well...

And through God’s works, as it says here, we come to see that “Your thoughts are very deep.” We begin to enter into God’s thought, His plan, His will, and the whole of His divine uncreated energies. We look more deeply and marvel still more. I am not sure what example to give you here, but you do meet some people...

It is almost as if they do it deliberately, though the poor people do not. They simply find themselves this way. They are very abrupt, very... well...

Take this lectern. One person sees it and nothing more. Another does not see it simply as an object. He notices how all its parts fit together: the carving here, the straight edge there, the raised design elsewhere. He takes it all in and sees it more fully. It is no longer just a bare object to him. And through it, he begins to see the person who made it.

He gains a little insight into the craftsman’s thinking, and then grasps still more. He is looking at the object, but does not stop there. Through what he sees, he sees other things, senses other things, and enters more deeply into them.

So when we look at God’s works and see within them the depth of His thought, His whole plan, His love, and His wondrous almighty power, we begin to understand the words, “Your thoughts are very deep.” I think I have told you this before.

One day something happened that, I would say, still moves me deeply...

I looked through a telescope—no, not a telescope, what do you call it? A microscope. Beneath it was a small icon, about this size, with its colors still there. Beside the icon was a very fine little knife. The icon was being restored: the material on its surface had to be cleaned away, and a new coating of oil or something similar applied, so that the icon itself could be seen again. Its true colors and the painting as it had been, the faces and everything else, would come to light. And then there was that little knife!

Someone—I cannot remember whether it was the same person—scraped it ever so lightly. To the naked eye, it looked as though almost nothing had happened. You had to look very closely to see that the knife had touched it at all. But through the microscope, that tiny scrape looked like a ravine. It seemed so deep—a ravine! And, believe it or not, you could make out what looked like layers in its sides. The microscope was not even one of the finest. It was one of those the Russians bring over, poor people trying to earn their living. Yet there were those layers, clearly visible.

You know how, when the ground is cut away, you can sometimes see layer upon layer: stones, then soil above them, then muddy soil above that. That is what appeared in this little scrape. I was honestly shaken by the sight that day. Things look one way to the naked eye and quite another through a microscope. You might say, “Well, a microscope just magnifies what we already see.” But what does it magnify? Does it somehow turn a few little lines into a hollow? No. It shows how much is really there—a whole ravine, full of detail. That is why, they say, some scientists in the last century, especially early in this one—and perhaps even today—would...

They would carry out experiments in their laboratories and look through their microscopes. What they saw moved them so deeply that they could not go on. They would kneel and pray before God with tears, marveling at His works. And even these things give us only the faintest glimpse into God’s thought, into what His all-wise wisdom means.

“How great are Your works, O Lord! Your thoughts are very deep. A foolish man will not know this, and one without understanding will not comprehend it.” A foolish man—and notice this: according to Holy Scripture, the person who is not of God, who does not believe in God, is foolish. Anyone who does not want to belong to God and does not obey Him, as is true of many people, is foolish.

So it speaks of a foolish man—a foolish man.

“A foolish man will not know.” He will understand nothing of God’s works or His thoughts. “And one without understanding will not comprehend it.” Someone who lacks even basic understanding will grasp none of these things.

“When sinners spring up like grass, and all who work lawlessness flourish, it is so that they may be destroyed forever.” Ah, the sinners. We said that this psalm resembles Psalm 72, which also speaks about sinners and how they prosper. “Why does the way of the ungodly prosper?” I think that is what Jeremiah says.

Why does the path of the ungodly go so well? Why do they prosper while the faithful do not? Psalm 72 speaks of this more fully; we looked at it then. Here, sinners spring up in this world like grass.

“All who work lawlessness flourish”: suddenly, all these people who commit lawlessness and live in sin appear. “So that they may be destroyed forever.” And what becomes of them in the end? They perish for all eternity. They spring up, seem to grow and amount to something, and then they are destroyed. I am nearly finished. “But You, O Lord, are Most High forever.” You, God Most High, endure forever. Why does the psalm bring sinners in here? Because sinners stand tall, puff themselves up, and boast. Whatever they do, whatever they think of themselves, they appear...

For a little while, and then disappear. But You, O Lord, endure forever. “For behold, Your enemies, O Lord, for behold, Your enemies shall perish, and all who work lawlessness shall be scattered.” You endure forever, while Your enemies—those who do not believe in You, these sinners and lawless people who think so highly of themselves—will perish. All who work lawlessness will be scattered and disappear. I will say no more, so as not to tire you. We will finish here. The point is that God is worthy of our praise. We praise Him because He is God Most High.

And when we look at God’s works, we marvel at them. On the other hand, there are the sinners, who want to act as though they too were God. In the other psalm, it seems that sinners prosper right to the end; their path goes well for them. Here, though, the emphasis is that they appear, imagine they are something, and then vanish. They perish and are scattered. In that other psalm, with the words “I became like a beast before You,” the emphasis is more on the spiritual side. As for material things, sinners may do well: those are the things they devote themselves to and pour their whole soul into.

They may have those things and enjoy them, but that amounts to nothing.

The faithful person, however, inherits the Kingdom of God. We will continue next time, God willing.
