Summary

Psalm 90 promises protection to those who make the Most High their refuge. Trusting God’s promises strengthens believers even when danger or suffering remains. The lecturer urges believers to pray with confidence and leave the timing of God’s answer to Him. God commands His angels to guard people throughout their lives, a promise the devil misused when tempting Christ. The psalm’s images of snakes, lions, and dragons also portray victory over sin and the powers of evil. In the psalm’s closing verses, God promises to hear, accompany, deliver, and save those who trust Him. Faith does not necessarily remove every problem, but it changes how believers bear hardship and understand its purpose.

We are in Psalm 90. We have looked at the first nine verses. In the first two, the Psalmist introduced the theme, and then he developed it. Up to the middle of verse nine, we hear, so to speak, one voice: “For You, Lord, are my hope.”

Uh, You, You are my hope.

Now a second voice comes in: “You have made the Most High your refuge.” There is no question mark here, but it seems fitting to read it as a question, as though another voice were asking, “Have you made the Most High your refuge?” So the Most High is your refuge. If He is your refuge, what follows? This second voice says: “No evil shall come near you, and no scourge shall draw near your dwelling, for He shall command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the asp and the basilisk, and trample the lion and the dragon.” So, with the Most High as your refuge, no evil will come near you, and no scourge will touch you.

Even where you live, the Most High will protect you, shelter you, cover you, and help you. These things are true. They really are. We do not believe them, though we act as if all is well, and we sin by failing to believe what the Word of God says and what God promises us. And we sin, but that is not all. There is more...

Well...

Suppose someone offers you a suit that makes you invulnerable. Whether someone shoots at you or sets you on fire, whatever happens, nothing can harm you. That is what this suit is like. Yet you turn it down. You refuse to accept it because you do not believe it works, and in doing so you offend the one who offered it to you. So we sin against God. But we also leave ourselves vulnerable, exposed to anything that may come.

This or that may harm you, strike you, or even kill you.

So when we believe what God says and promises, and live in accord with His command, His desire, and His will, we avoid sin and are also fortified.

We are protected! We are protected and sheltered. “No evil shall come near you.” Evil will not be able to reach you, and no scourge will touch your dwelling, even there in your own home.

Of course.

Someone might say—as happened the other day when I was in Athens, speaking to a person there... Well...

“Look, pay attention to what we are saying right now. Believe these things, and that settles it. From now on, things will not be as they were.” But the person said, “Yes, but what if they do not turn out that way?”

That is the delicate point.

We were speaking about this recently. I think we said it in Athens the other day, though I cannot remember; perhaps we said it here too in another connection. It is what our Russian Chrysostom says: even when you have not received it, you must believe that you are receiving it. That is the point. This is not self-deception. You told God; you told Him in faith. That is done. That was your part, and from then on you have received it. The only difference is that this gift from God will become apparent when it needs to. God knows when. You have already received it, if you believe in this way.

Two great and wonderful things happen when you believe like this. First, when you trust God’s promises so firmly, even if hardships come, you scarcely feel them, because you are so deeply anchored in His promise. And if they come and you do feel them, you may even see that it is good they came, because the new spirit with which you face them brings much good. So even if hardships keep coming, either you scarcely notice them, or you do not feel their weight so much, or you find that they benefit you greatly.

The other good thing is that God sees your faith and knows you have learned the lesson. If God permits one trouble after another to come, He permits them so that you may learn to believe, to hope, and not to fear them. You learn to be ready, if need be, to sacrifice yourself and suffer all these things for Christ. That is the lesson we were talking about. Once God sees that you have learned it, the question of whether troubles will come no longer preoccupies you. What matters is that you trust God and accept His promises. God Himself knows and judges this; He weighs everything. And when He sees that you have learned the lesson, those troubles do not come. So either one good thing may happen, or the other may happen.

“He shall command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.” Yes, God even commands His angels to come and guard you in every part of your life, along your whole journey, on every road you take. Remember, the devil also used this passage in an attempt to trap Christ, and Christ, of course, sent him away. Yet it is true that the angels serve and help human beings. They are guardian angels, truly guardians. “My guardian angel, holy angel, guardian of my wretched and troubled life.” A guardian. We do not really believe this either, or take it to heart. I think I told you on another occasion about someone...

At any rate, when this person said that prayer at the end of Compline, he would turn to his right, as though he could see the angel there. His faith was that strong. Our angel is generally at our right side, so he would turn right and pray. It is much as we turn a little toward the icon screen when we pray to Christ, or toward the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) when we pray to her. In the same way, he would turn as though the angel were standing before him. This is true; it is real. Angels exist, and God has given them this task for us. He commands them to be our guardians, to watch over us and protect us.

The Catholics used to make pictures of this sort. Such images would not have a place here in the Orthodox Church, but the scenes themselves make the point well: a child has fallen in the grass, with a snake lurking nearby, and an angel above protects the child from it. Or a child crosses a bridge and might fall, but the angel accompanies the child there too. “They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” The angels even carry you in their hands so that your foot will not stumble against a stone.

Origen suggests here that the foot means the soul: the soul must not stumble against the stone, which is sin. It must not become caught in sin or cling to it. “You shall tread upon the asp and the basilisk, and trample the lion and the dragon.” The asp and the basilisk are snakes. It is not quite clear what kind of snake the asp is. As for the basilisk, who knows? Perhaps it had, or still has if it exists, a little mark on its head that makes it look like a tiny king. In any case, they are venomous snakes. “You shall tread upon the asp and the basilisk, and trample the lion and the dragon.” You will come into contact with these snakes.

These harmful creatures will flee; you will touch them, pass over them, and so on, and they will not bite you. “And you will trample the lion and the dragon.” You will overcome the lion and the dragon, the dragon again being a fearsome serpent. This is what the Lord says, and it is a reality. These creatures also have a symbolic meaning: when the Most High is your refuge, you have nothing to fear from the whole power of evil, even the fiercest and most poisonous forms of sin. That is where it begins. And remember that the Lord Himself tells His disciples they have nothing to fear from snakes or scorpions or anything else.

Now, at the end, God Himself speaks. In verses fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen: “Because he has hoped in Me, I will deliver him. I will shelter him, because he has known My name.” God is saying: This servant of Mine has placed his hope in Me, so I will rescue him. I will shelter him because he knows My name. He believes in Me, knows Me, loves Me, and looks to Me for all his hope. He has placed that hope in Me. I will deliver him, shelter him, and guard him. “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him.” He will cry out to Me, and I will hear him. “I am with him in trouble.” When he is suffering, when these things come upon him, I am with him.

“I will deliver him and glorify him.” I will free him from whatever trap he faces, and I will glorify him. “With length of days I will satisfy him”: I will fill his life with many years. “And I will show him My salvation.” He will come to know it, taste it, enjoy it, and live in the fullness of the salvation I, God, offer him. We have covered these verses briefly. Now, as we said when we came to “I am with him in trouble”—and this strikes me today, as it has before—if you do not believe these words, you remain alone with your suffering. You remain with your hardships, your problems, your worries, and all those other troubles.

But if you believe, the Lord gives you His assurance: “He will call upon Me, and I will hear him. I am with him in trouble.” He will deliver you and glorify you, and everything will work for your good and your salvation. The question is whether we believe His words in this way. If we do, as we have said so many times, the problems lose their hold on us; things fall into place. That does not mean we will have no problems. It means they will no longer bear down on us or torment us as they do now. They will no longer overwhelm us.

They will no longer weigh on us and crush us as they do until we receive these promises with faith. God exists. The Lord Almighty lives, and He is our God. He longs to protect us, to be our refuge and our shelter, and to help us in everything. If we believe and hope in Him, yet our problem remains, we can be completely certain that it needs to remain. And when we accept it in that way, it is as though the problem and all its difficulty have come to an end. That is all for today, and tomorrow we will...
