Summary
The psalmist praises God before voicing the complaints that appear later in the psalm. The heavens, angels, and saints glorify God’s wonders, yet none can equal him. God inspires reverence among the heavenly hosts through his unmatched power and majesty. God’s truth includes his faithfulness to fulfill what he has promised, inviting believers to trust his word. God rules the sea, calms its waves, humbles the proud, and scatters his enemies. The lecturer urges believers to look beyond their own troubles and join the psalmist in praising God’s greatness.

Now, in Psalm 88, where we are, from verse 6 to about verse 15, the psalmist begins to praise God. He says many things to glorify and praise Him. Later in the psalm he will voice some complaints. But first he declares firmly that he believes in God, belongs to God, loves God, and blesses and glorifies Him. Only then does he come to his complaints.
“The heavens shall praise Your wonders, O Lord, and Your truth in the assembly of the Saints.” We spoke about this last time: the heavens glorify You and sing Your praise. In the assembly of the Saints—that is, in heaven among the angels—they praise Your wonders, all the marvelous things You do, and Your truth, Your faithfulness. “For who in the clouds shall be compared to the Lord?” Who up there could be equal to the Lord? Again, the psalmist is exalting Him. There are angels and Saints; there is heaven and the spiritual world. But who among them can be equal to the Lord? “And who among the sons of God shall be likened to the Lord?”
He repeats the same thought in the next verse. Of all these sons of God—the Saints of God and the angels in heaven—who could be like the Lord? I think we had reached this point last time. “God is glorified in the council of the Saints, great and awesome above all who surround Him.” He continues in the same way. God is glorified by the Saints—again, he means those in heaven. He is great, almighty, majestic, and awesome to
all those around Him. These may be the angels, the radiant angels.
They are holy angels and heavenly powers, but none can be compared with God. God is God, and He is awesome to them all. That does not mean He frightens them. It means He fills them with awe, and they all honor and revere Him. “O Lord God of hosts, who is like You?” Again, the same thought: You are the Lord, the God of the heavenly hosts; who is like You? “You are mighty, O Lord, and Your truth surrounds You.” You are mighty, my God, and all these qualities belong to You.
Above all, He is trustworthy. The psalmist emphasizes this again and again when he speaks of God’s truth. There is also truth in the sense of “I am the truth.” He is the truth; He is love; He is everything. Blessed is the person who, whatever path they have traveled, comes to understand that God is the truth. But truth here also means that God will do what He has said. He will keep and fulfill what He has promised. As we said, what more could we want? What more could we want?
All that remains for us is to attend closely to His word, hear what the Lord says, believe it, accept it, and wait for the Lord to act accordingly. Then who can stand against us? “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Who can prevail against us? “You rule the power of the sea.” Now the psalmist turns to the earth. “You rule the power of the sea; You calm the surge of its waves.” God is Lord of the sea as well, and He is the one who calms its waves. The sea may swell and churn. At times it may seem ready to burst its bounds, yet God calms it. “You humbled the proud as one wounded; with the arm of Your power You scattered Your enemies.”
No one can contend with God. No one can stand against Him and prevail. So God will humble anyone who grows proud. “You humbled the proud as one wounded, and with the arm of Your power”—with Your strong arm and divine power—“You scattered Your enemies.” The psalm goes on, but we will stop here so I do not tire you. You may remember something we said when we began this psalm—or so I thought.
Do you remember? Ah, no, it was not in this psalm. It was when we were explaining the prayers at Baptism: “Great are You, O Lord, and marvelous are Your works, and no word will suffice.” We spoke then of God’s greatness, His majesty, and His glory. It means a great deal when one of His creatures sees these things. It lifts a person out of a miserable state. You may be religious and yet remain wrapped up in your own troubles, always grumbling and complaining. You call on God, but then draw Him into your complaints and your misery. Here, by contrast, the psalmist seems to forget himself and everything else as he recounts these things and glorifies and praises God.
We find the same thing in the prayers, as we said—whole passages of it: You who did this, You who did that, You who made the world and the sea, You who made all things. But we will stop here and continue next Saturday.
We will probably have heating tomorrow in the main church, the large one. We did not have it today, so we went to the small church. We made a temporary repair, though it is not a permanent fix, and I think we will have heating tomorrow morning. As we said, we will finish early—by quarter to nine at the latest—because I have to travel some distance. That is all.

Κυρίως αυτό το ότι είσαι αξιόπιστος, αυτό το τονίζει και το ξανατονίζει σε αυτόν τον ψαλμό, όπως είδαμε, την αλήθεια του Θεού. Δηλαδή όχι με την έννοια ότι η αλήθεια, η αλήθεια, «εγώ είμαι, εγώ είμαι η αλήθεια». Αυτός είναι η αλήθεια, αυτός είναι η αγάπη, αυτός είναι η αλήθεια, αυτός είναι τα πάντα, η αλήθεια. Μακάριος εκείνος ο οποίος θα περάσει μέσα από οποιαδήποτε μονοπάτια και θα φτάσει σε αυτήν την έννοια ότι ο Θεός είναι η αλήθεια. Αλλά και η αλήθεια με την έννοια ότι ο Θεός αυτό που είπε θα το κάνει, αυτό που υποσχέθηκε θα το τηρήσει, θα το εκπληρώσει. Και όπως είπαμε, τι άλλο θέλουμε εμείς; Τι άλλο θέλουμε;
