Summary
The lecture introduces Psalm 88 as a long and distinctive psalm. Its date of composition is unknown, but its central theme is God’s promise of an eternal throne to David. David’s earthly throne could not itself endure forever. Christ, a descendant of David according to the flesh, fulfills the promise through his eternal kingship. The speaker reads the whole psalm as messianic and plans to examine it in detail next time.

Since we did not get to it last time, we are still at Psalm 88 in the Psalter. It is a long psalm, a very long one.
I see it has 52 or 53 verses. It is a long and distinctive psalm. We do not know exactly when it was written, but it is a messianic psalm. Above all, it speaks of God’s promise that David’s throne will endure forever. David’s earthly throne could not endure forever, but David is the ancestor of…
Christ is descended from David according to the flesh. In Christ, that throne will endure forever, and the Kingdom of God will be eternal. This is how God’s promises are fulfilled for all eternity. That is why this psalm is messianic. It speaks especially of the Messiah, though it does not name him explicitly. We can understand the whole spirit and meaning of the psalm when we read it as messianic. We will see that Christ, as David’s descendant according to the flesh, does more than continue David’s kingdom: he is the true King of that kingdom and the one who sits upon that throne.
We will go into the psalm in depth next time. That is all for today.
