Summary
Interrupting his cycle on the Beatitudes for the feast of 25 March, Dimitrios Panagopoulos presents the Annunciation as the greatest of the feasts and the root from which the others grow, since none could be kept without the conception that precedes them. Following Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea and Joseph Bryennios, he traces the festal cycle backward from Pentecost to that root. He calls the day the enemy's defeat: Satan never conceived that God would become man, a mystery veiled in Genesis 3:15 and misread by Eve, and God concealed the Theotokos in the Holy of Holies. With Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, Saint Andrew of Crete, and Saint Gregory of Nyssa he expounds the greeting “Rejoice, full of grace,” showing the Virgin as the second Eve whose obedience reversed the first disobedience, and he defends the Orthodox iconography of the feast.
