Summary
Bodily presence brings no profit without inward attention, Dimitrios Panagopoulos warns in the fifth talk, since even clergy who commune daily may remain unchanged. The Church is the place where Christ heals the soul wounded by the enemy, but the cure fails when the medicine is taken by self-will instead of as prescribed. The devil works to scatter the mind, so that many stand in the temple while their thoughts travel far, and the same distraction afflicts private prayer, where the Hexapsalmos or the Salutations are finished with the mind elsewhere. What God rewards is persistence: two hours of prayer that gather the mind for ten real minutes still earn a full reward, because one struggled and did not withdraw. Prayer is a science no ascetic ever perfected, and the sacred language of worship must keep its reverence.
