Summary
Opening a long cycle on churchgoing, Dimitrios Panagopoulos argues that salvation asks more than good intentions or private religious ideas: it asks that one follow the way Christ established within His Church. The parable of the Good Samaritan gives him his governing image, the Church as the inn to which the wounded soul is entrusted for healing (Luke 10:25-37). Christians must know why they come, how to take part, and how to keep afterward what they received. The Church feeds the soul with the Body and Blood, with the reading of Scripture, and with the doctrinal hymnody of Vespers and Orthros, and preaching must explain these so that worship yields repentance. Like the ark and the sheepfold she shelters, but attendance, donations, and outward religiosity save no one who does not repent.
