On this third Sunday of the Fast, we celebrate and venerate the Precious and Life-Giving Cross for the following reasons. First, through the forty-day fast, we too are, in a sense, crucified and put to death with regard to the passions. We taste some bitterness as acedia, a spiritual torpor, overtakes us and our strength fails. So the Precious and Life-Giving Cross is brought before us to strengthen us and remind us of the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is as though the Lord’s Cross speaks to us and comforts us: If Christ, who is true God, took flesh and was crucified for you, how much more should you be willing to suffer for His sake?

When we compare our own hardships with those of our Master, remember His sufferings, and hope for the glory we receive through the Cross, we find refreshment and the labors of fasting grow lighter. For our Savior was glorified after ascending the Cross and enduring humiliation and bitterness. We too must follow Him if we are to be glorified with Him, though for now we suffer only a little. The second reason we venerate the Precious Cross today is this: Travelers hurrying along a long road become weary from their journey. If they find a tree with welcome shade,

they rest beneath it for a long while. Then they rise with renewed strength, continue on, and finish the rest of their journey. So too, halfway along the demanding road of the Fast, the holy Fathers have, as it were, planted the Life-Giving Cross. It gives us rest and refreshment after our labors and strength to complete what lies ahead, making those remaining labors lighter and easier to overcome. The third reason we venerate the Precious Cross today is this: When a king is about to visit a city or some other place,

the Second Coming (Parousia), Diadochos of Photike, the Annunciation, and from these the king arrives victorious and triumphant. In the same way, our Lord Jesus Christ will soon show us His victory over death and appear in glory on the day of the Resurrection. So He sends His scepter ahead of Him, His royal banner: the Life-Giving Cross. It fills our hearts with joy and refreshment and prepares us to welcome the King Himself soon afterward and acclaim Him as the glorious victor. The precious wood is brought before us in the middle of Great Lent because this holy season is like the bitter spring of Marah: fasting wears down the body and brings bitterness and acedia, spiritual torpor, to the soul,

which come from the fast. Just as the prophet Moses placed in that spring the wood God had shown him and made its waters sweet, so God, who led us through the spiritual Red Sea and past the spiritual Pharaoh, sweetens the bitterness of fasting with the life-giving wood of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. He comforts and strengthens us as though we were traveling through a desert, until He brings us to the heavenly Jerusalem through His holy Resurrection. We can understand a fourth reason for venerating the Precious Cross in the middle of Great Lent. The Precious Cross is called the Tree of Life, and truly is the Tree of Life. As for the tree Holy Scripture describes

as planted in the middle of Paradise in Eden, the holy Fathers fittingly planted the precious wood of the Cross, the true Tree of Life, in the middle of Great Lent. In doing so, they remind us of Adam’s gluttony and show us his deliverance through this wood of the Precious Cross. For through this wood we do not die; we are given life. Bringing out the Precious Cross for veneration in the middle of Great Lent is a very ancient custom, and John Chrysostom gave a homily on it. The custom became widespread in the Church from the eighth century onward.

It was adopted from the order of services used at the renowned Studion Monastery. Today’s celebration also arose from the commemoration of the Finding of the Precious Cross on March sixth. Because that commemoration always falls during Great Lent, on days when a full Divine Liturgy cannot be celebrated, it passes almost unnoticed. For this reason, together with those already mentioned, it was fittingly decided that the Precious Cross should be brought before us for veneration today.

The power of the Cross does not come from its shape in itself, but from Christ crucified upon it. The Cross is an image of the Crucified One and cannot be understood apart from Him. From Him it draws its power and grace. The Precious Cross is more than a shape: it is the throne of Christ, the altar on which He was sacrificed, the place where He showed His love for God the Father and His love for humanity. There He crushed sin and defeated and weakened the devil. The Cross of Christ conveys this redeeming, saving power. The Cross is no magical instrument.

It bears the life-giving power of the divine uncreated energies. When we make the sign of the Cross, grace is given; in this way the Mysteries and the Church’s sacred rites are performed. The water of the baptismal font is sanctified by the descent of the Holy Spirit and the making of the sign of the Cross. In the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the priest makes the sign of the Cross over the Holy Gifts, and they become the Body and Blood of Christ. We venerate the Precious Cross and make its sign upon ourselves, first, to express our gratitude to Christ, who loved us even to the Cross and saved us through it. Second, we ask for His grace to drive away the devil, our cunning and relentless enemy. Third,

we seek to crucify our evil desires, our wayward will, and the sinful logismoi, the intrusive thoughts that draw us away from God. Fourth, when we venerate the Precious Cross or make its sign upon ourselves, we confess that we too will strive to live a life shaped by the Cross. We will devote ourselves to ascesis, the ascetic discipline of Christian life, or, if the Lord grants it, even sacrifice our lives, as the holy Martyrs did and as all the Saints lived. The Precious Cross of the Lord is our strength, our glory, and our hope of salvation. It draws its power from the crucified Lord. Therefore, when we venerate the Precious Cross or make its sign upon our bodies,

we pray with all the strength of our souls: O Cross of Christ, save us by your power.

Παρούσα τρίτη Κυριακή των Νηστειών εορτάζουμε και επιτελούμε την προσκύνηση του Τιμίου και Ζωοποιού Σταυρού για τις ακόλουθες αιτίες. Πρώτον, επειδή με την τεσσαρακονθήμερη νηστεία κατά κάποιο τρόπο σταυρωνόμαστε και νεκρωνόμαστε κι εμείς από τα πάθη και λαμβάνουμε κάποια αίσθηση πικρίας, με το να μας καταλαμβάνει η ακηδία και να καταπίπτουμε. Γι' αυτό προβάλλεται ο Τίμιος και Ζωοποιός Σταυρός, για να στηριχθούμε και να θυμηθούμε το πάθος του Κυρίου μας Ιησού Χριστού, ο οποίος Σταυρός του Κυρίου κατά κάποιο τρόπο μας λέγει και μας παρηγορεί: Εάν ο Χριστός, ο οποίος είναι Θεός αληθινός και αφού έλαβε σάρκα σταυρώθηκε για σας, πόσο πρέπει εσείς γι' αυτό να πάσχετε;
