On September 14, we celebrate the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. On this same day, Saint John Chrysostom fell asleep in the Lord. We also commemorate the devout Empress Placilla, wife of the devout Emperor Theodosius the Great; the holy Sixth Ecumenical Council of the 170 Holy Fathers, who gathered in Constantinople against the Monothelites; the holy martyrs Papa Theokles and Valerian the Infant; and the holy New Venerable Martyr Macarius, who was martyred in Thessaloniki in 1527.

When Constantine, Equal to the Apostles, was about to fight Maxentius, he saw that the enemy army was larger than his own, and he was troubled and afraid. Then, at midday under a clear sky, a cross formed of stars appeared in the heavens. Around it, stars formed the words, “In this sign, conquer”—that is, “By the power of this sign, you will be victorious.” That night, he also saw Christ in a vision. Christ told him to make a banner like the Cross he had seen

and have it carried before his army. In this way, he would defeat his enemies. Constantine did so, and in the battle that followed he won a decisive victory. Through this miracle he understood the power of Christ crucified. He came to believe that Christ is the true God and became a Christian, as did his mother, Helena. After the First Ecumenical Council concluded in 325, Emperor Constantine honored the holy bishops who had taken part and sent them back to their homelands. He instructed Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, to search for Christ’s tomb and the Precious Cross,

for so much time had passed that Christians no longer knew where the Lord’s tomb was. He gave Macarius ample money for the search. Around that time, Empress Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, received a vision from God commanding her to go in person to the Holy Land and find the Precious Cross. She asked her son for his consent and the money she needed. And so, despite her advanced age—she was then eighty—she went with divine zeal to Jerusalem in 326. Bishop Macarius and all the bishops welcomed her there. As soon as Saint Helena entered the city, she began her search,

but no one knew where the Place of the Skull was or where the Precious Cross lay buried. Then the bishops and the people prayed to God, and it was revealed to Bishop Macarius that Golgotha lay beneath the temple of Aphrodite, built by Emperor Hadrian in 136. Golgotha is the Hebrew name for the Place of the Skull, where Christ was crucified. The Precious Cross was buried there as well. The Empress gathered a great number of craftsmen and laborers and ordered them to tear that defiled temple down to its foundations and carry away the earth.

So they dug. Saint Helena was often present as the work went on. They found Christ’s tomb, and near it they found three crosses. Digging a little farther, they also found the nails with which Christ had been fastened to the Cross. They were deeply moved. Two crosses had clearly carried the bodies of the thieves; the third belonged to the Lord. But which one was it? The Lord’s Cross had a distinctive shape, while the other two were shaped like the letter tau. Yet the upper part, which had risen above the crossbeam and borne the inscription “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” may no longer have been there.

And the identity of the Cross was to be confirmed in an even clearer and more solemn way. A noble and deeply devout woman was gravely ill, and the doctors had given up hope for her. Each of the three crosses was laid upon the dying woman in turn. When the last one, the Cross of Christ, touched her, she became completely well.

According to another tradition, the woman had already died, and the Lord’s Cross raised her from the dead. Whichever account is right, the Cross was revealed unmistakably. The Precious Cross was about four and a half meters long and a meter and forty centimeters wide. According to Saint John Chrysostom, it was a handspan thick. It is also said to have had a footrest on which the feet of Christ the Master were placed.

Thus the words of the Psalm were fulfilled: “Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His footstool, for He is holy.” When the people of Jerusalem and Christians from the surrounding areas heard that the Cross of Christ had been found, they all came running—men, women, and children—and begged Saint Helena

to let them kiss the Precious Cross. But those guarding it saw how many people had gathered and how fervent they were. Fearing that the people might seize it in their devotion and divide it among themselves, they said that no one could touch or kiss it. The people replied, “If we cannot kiss it, at least let us see it from a distance, we beg Your Majesty.” So, in response to the people’s plea and their faith, they built a high platform. Saint Macarius climbed onto it, took the Precious Cross, and raised it toward the four directions. At the sight of the Cross, the people cried out loudly and with tears, “Lord have mercy.”

From that time on, the Exaltation of the Precious Cross has been celebrated. On this feast day, we Christians fast because the Cross calls to mind Christ’s Passion. That is why the Gospel of the Lord’s Passion is read at the Divine Liturgy. When someone has the remains of a son, father, mother, or brother taken up, that day brings sorrow as they remember their loved one. In the same way, when we Christians look upon the Cross and remember that Christ was crucified on it for us sinners, and that He suffered as a man, we humble ourselves and show our contrition by fasting. When those Christians saw the Precious Cross and, even in this way, received what they had longed for, they glorified God. It is said that the Empress took the Cross and ordered it to be sawn

from top to bottom, across its width, making two crosses. She placed one in a silver case and entrusted it to Saint Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, to remain there. She took the other, along with the precious nails, to her son Constantine the Great in Constantinople. She also ordered churches to be built at Christ’s life-giving tomb, at Golgotha, in Bethlehem, and on the Mount of Olives, and she did many other good works there. Constantine the Great welcomed her and venerated the Precious Cross with deep longing. He entrusted it to the Patriarch of Constantinople to be kept in the treasury, and he placed one of the precious nails in his helmet

and another in his horse’s bridle. Thus the words of the prophet Zechariah were fulfilled: “On that day, what is on the bridles of the king’s horses shall be ‘Holy to the Lord Almighty.’” About three hundred years after the discovery and Exaltation of the Precious Cross, the Persians plundered Palestine and carried off the Cross in 614. Yet it was the Cross that conquered them, for it enlightened the souls of the conquerors and put an end to their worship of fire. And just as the Philistines, after seizing the Ark of the Covenant, were defeated by the Israelites, so too the Persians, who had taken the Precious Cross as plunder,

were defeated by Emperor Heraclius in 628. Returning in triumph to Constantinople, he raised the life-giving wood for a second time in the Great Church of Saint Sophia, before the cheering people of the city. It is said that a wonderfully fragrant liquid flowed from the knots in the Cross and healed every illness. The holy oil from the lamp beside the precious wood of the Cross also worked miracles; it was called the Oil of the Cross. Finally, the Cross is closely associated with basil, for tradition tells us that basil always grew at the site of Holy Golgotha,

where the Precious Cross lay buried. The pagans who had built the temple of Aphrodite above it would pull the basil out, but it always grew again. In remembrance of this, we accompany the Cross with basil when we perform both the small and the great blessing of water.

We see three crosses. In the middle stands the Lord’s Precious Cross, and to its right and left are the other crosses, bearing the two thieves.

The crosses of the two thieves do not have the same meaning: one becomes a means of salvation, the other a judgment. Yet both men crucified beside Christ were thieves—criminals. One of them is saved because he confessed Christ, though he had no good works to offer.

He said, “Remember me in Your Kingdom.” He worshiped Christ in his heart, and by Christ’s grace he entered Paradise. “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.” The other thief is condemned because he blasphemed Christ and remained apart from Him.

The earth is Golgotha. At the center stands the crucified and risen Lord. All of us stand around Christ, each upon our own cross—the cross of sin and death. Every one of us is a sinner. Our sinfulness, however, is not what distinguishes one person from another.

Sinfulness is common to all; what distinguishes us is our relationship with Christ. One person believes in Christ, receives Him, worships Him, repents, and is saved. Another wants no relationship with Him. He rejects Him and is condemned; he condemns himself. Each person is saved or condemned according to how they respond to Christ. So the Cross of Christ becomes a balance of justice, as the Church sings of the two thieves: “Between two thieves, Your Cross was revealed as a balance of justice: the one was brought down to Hades by the weight of his blasphemy, while the other was relieved of his sins and brought to the knowledge of God. Christ our God, glory to You.” May our veneration of the Cross of Christ extend into daily life as a continual acceptance of His life and grace.

of the life-giving Cross.
