The church of the Most Holy Theotokos at Blachernae in Constantinople had been built by Empress Pulcheria, daughter of Emperor Arcadius. She ruled with her husband Marcian in the fifth century. The church was renowned, and even the emperors came to it with great reverence. Its remarkable icons covered the whole church and depicted the events of the Lord’s life up to the Ascension. During Marcian’s reign, the burial cloths of the Theotokos had already been placed there. They had been sent by Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem, who is also commemorated today.

During the reign of Marcian’s successor, the most devout Emperor Leo I, called the Great, the precious robe of the Lady Theotokos was also brought there and placed in the church. This is how it happened. At that time there were two brothers, Galbios and Candidos, noblemen and military commanders, who had fallen into the heresy of Arius. But God’s grace did not leave them in its darkness. Because they had many good qualities and virtues, He enlightened them and led them to the true faith. They were grateful for this great blessing and, after their return to the faith, showed themselves

zealous for the pure faith. They not only confessed Orthodoxy themselves but also taught others that the persons of the Holy Trinity are of one essence and equally without beginning, and that the Most Holy Virgin gave birth in the flesh to God the Word (Logos), who is of one essence with God the Father. In this way they guided many others to the truth. Every day they gave generous alms to the poor, seeking to make amends for their former sin of heresy. Seeing their many good works, the all-praised mother of Christ enlightened their hearts and moved them to visit the Holy Places, find her precious robe, and bring it to Constantinople, the Queen of Cities.

Many other sacred relics were kept there as well. So the brothers set out for Palestine. They passed through Galilee to see Nazareth and Capernaum. By God’s providence, they stayed in a nearby village that concealed a great treasure. They spent the night in the home of an honorable elderly woman named Anna. Jewish by birth and Christian by faith, she was devout and virtuous. Like Anna the daughter of Phanuel, she prayed night and day, though her place of prayer was not Solomon’s Temple but the sacred workshop of her heart. From this woman they learned about a nearby house where

crowds of sick people gathered and many great miracles took place. Demons were driven out, the blind received their sight, the lame walked, and every other incurable illness was healed. After much persistence, the brothers learned the secret the elderly woman had received from her ancestors and kept sacred: a small chest there held the robe of the Theotokos, and through it her grace worked these wonders. When the time of her departure drew near, the Theotokos gave two tunics as a blessing to two virgins. One of them was an ancestor of this elderly woman. At her death, she left the holy garment to another virgin in her family,

who left it to another, until it came to this elderly woman. She had no other virgin to whom she could pass on the precious treasure. The two brothers asked to spend the night in the house where it was kept, and there they kept vigil. When they saw that everyone else was asleep, they measured the chest that held the robe of the Theotokos. They then went to venerate the Holy Places and had an identical chest made. On their return, they stayed again in that sacred house and secretly exchanged the two chests. In the morning they said goodbye to the unsuspecting woman and departed with great joy, taking the treasure with them.

When they reached Constantinople, they placed the treasure in the church at Blachernae without revealing what it was. But so many miracles followed that the brothers had to tell the emperor the whole story. He was overjoyed and bestowed many honors on Galbios and Candidos, calling them blessed because God had counted them worthy to serve in such a Mystery. He and Empress Verina venerated the holy robe and richly adorned the church in honor and glory of the Theotokos. The emperor wrapped the robe in royal purple cloth and placed it in another small chest made of amber. This stood inside the larger chest called the Soros.

As long as those devout rulers and the two noble brothers lived, they continued to come to that church to glorify and thank the Lord and the Lady, who had counted them worthy to receive such a spiritual treasure. Later emperors, officials, and ordinary people also came there continually. With great reverence they prayed and witnessed the many miracles of the Theotokos, who sheltered the city and protected it from many dangers. When, some time later, the case containing the robe was opened, such a sweet fragrance rose from it that it filled the church. And although the royal purple wrapping

was made of silk, it had deteriorated with age. The robe itself was made of wool, which wears out quickly, yet it was found intact, bearing witness to the purity and incorruptibility of the Theotokos. It was fitting that the garment of the Most Holy Theotokos should be preserved in this way, for she kept her soul and body, her thoughts and conduct, her words and manner of life pure and undefiled. If the shadows of Peter and Paul, and their handkerchiefs, received such holiness that they healed the sick, how much grace must the all-holy garment of the Theotokos have held? It covered not only her, but many times she also used it, as a mother would, to cover the Master when He was an infant. When the Patriarch saw this,

he sent word to the emperor with joy and excitement. The emperor came with the whole senate, and they all venerated the robe with deep feeling and reverence. Because the city was then at war, all the people could not come to venerate it, though they begged the emperor to let them. He promised that they could do so in a few days, once the danger had passed. So they closed the chest and placed it in the sanctuary of the Great Church. Soon afterward, through the miraculous help of the Theotokos, the enemies were scattered. As he had promised, the emperor ordered the people to gather on an appointed day to venerate the holy robe of the Theotokos. All the bishops assembled,

along with priests, monks, and laypeople, men and women, young and old. First they held an all-night vigil in the church of Saint Lawrence, where the holy Soros containing the robe of the Most Holy Theotokos was kept. The people passed by and kissed the outside of the chest. In the morning the Patriarch lifted it with his head uncovered. The faithful emperor also went bareheaded, without his crown, carrying the ceremonial canopy. On foot, accompanied by the people, they reached the church at Blachernae. There the Patriarch set down the treasure, fell face down on the ground, and prayed for a long time with fervent tears. Then he rose, opened the holy case, and took out the sacred robe.

He held it high, and everyone saw it with deep emotion. Then he celebrated the Divine Liturgy. The emperor and all the others who were worthy received Holy Communion, and they departed glorifying the Lord.

The goodness and blessing of the Lady Theotokos are an extension of God’s goodness and blessing. From before all ages, God’s loving plan was for His Son to become incarnate. God created the world so that He might be united with His creatures and they might share in His love. But for this plan to be fulfilled, there had to be a person ready to cooperate with Him. The Most Holy Theotokos alone was found to cooperate with God so completely. Saint John of Damascus tells us that all creation was made for the Theotokos, to find its fulfillment in her.

The ages passed as they awaited the one woman blessed above all others. God and creation awaited the Most Holy Theotokos. With the words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” she surrendered herself entirely into God’s hands and to His will. She was a vessel of utmost purity, ready to respond to the gentle movement of the Holy Spirit. We should understand that her words were no decision made in a moment. They were the ripe fruit of the work of purification God had carried out among His people Israel over the centuries, and also of the purity of her own life, which she had lived from the age of three

in the Temple, renouncing all earthly things and turning herself wholly toward God. Our Most Holy Theotokos’s decision had none of the shallowness, or the changeability, that often marks our good intentions. It was a free, spontaneous, sincere expression of her whole being, rising from the depths of her heart. Her yes was not spoken for a single moment; it endured. It came not only from her conscious awareness but from the depths beyond it. Her purity did not stop at her mind; it reached to her very last cell. God asks the same daily, enduring yes from us—from our nous, our spiritual mind, from our hearts, and from our whole being—so that He may bless us and those around us.
