On August 31, our Church commemorates the placing of the Holy Belt of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos (God-bearer), in the Hagia Soros, and the miracle worked for Empress Zoe. We also commemorate the restoration of the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos at the Neorion; the four holy martyrs from Perge in Pamphylia; the holy martyrs Menas, Faustus, Andrew, and Heraclius; Saint Phileortos the Martyr; Saint Diadochos the Martyr; the seven holy virgin martyrs of Gaza; and the 366 holy martyrs of Nicomedia.

We are bound to thank and glorify, first, the Holy Trinity, the one true God, who created us and made us anew out of His great compassion and goodness. Second, we must thank the Lady Theotokos (God-bearer), through whom we have received, and continue to receive, so many blessings. We celebrate and praise all the other Saints because they showed their gratitude to God by keeping His holy and saving commandments. How much more, then, should we celebrate the Most Holy Mother of God? Through her great holiness, humility, and purity, she moved the God who loves mankind to bow the heavens and take flesh from her to save us.

That is why the Holy Fathers of our Church fittingly established feasts in her honor: not only her great feasts—the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, the Meeting of the Lord, the Annunciation, and the Dormition of the Theotokos—but also other days when she worked wonders, especially through her holy garments. The Holy Belt of the Theotokos was kept, together with her holy robe, by a Jewish virgin. Later it was taken from Jerusalem to Zela in Pontus, in Cappadocia, and from there to Constantinople. There it was placed in a splendid reliquary called the Hagia Soros, in the Church of the Theotokos in the Chalkoprateia district.

We do not know with certainty when the Belt was brought there and placed in the reliquary. Judging by the golden seal, the written record, and the date that Emperor Leo found inside the Hagia Soros, it most likely happened during the reign of Emperor Arcadius, who ruled from AD 395 to 408.

There are two feasts associated with the Holy Belt of the Theotokos. The first is on April 12, marking its transfer from Zela to Constantinople. The second is today’s feast, which celebrates its placing in the Hagia Soros and commemorates the miracle worked for Empress Zoe.

Four hundred and ten years after the Belt was placed there, Emperor Leo the Wise opened the Hagia Soros for the sake of his wife, Empress Zoe, who was afflicted by an unclean spirit. She had seen in a dream that if the Holy Belt of the Theotokos were laid upon her, she would be freed from the demon.

When the holy reliquary was opened, the Lady Theotokos’s precious Belt was found shining brilliantly. With it were a golden seal and a brief written record giving the indiction, the year, and the day when it had been brought to Constantinople. The record also said that Emperor Arcadius had placed it in the reliquary and sealed it with his own hands. The Emperor venerated and kissed the Holy Belt, and the Patriarch of that time laid it upon the suffering Empress. And, O wonder, she was immediately freed from the demon. All glorified God and Christ our Savior and thanked His most pure Mother. Then they returned the Holy Belt to its former place in the Hagia Soros. We should also mention that the Church of the Theotokos at Chalkoprateia was built by Emperor Justin and his wife Sophia. At its all-night vigil, men of high standing served as readers. They considered it a great honor to serve God.

Among them were Rangabe, before he became emperor, when he held the title of kouropalates, Bardas Caesar, and many other dignitaries. They led the chanting and performed many other special duties. It is said that Empress Pulcheria, out of devotion and love for the Lady Theotokos, sewed gold threads into the Belt, and they can still be seen today. Later, an imperial cross containing the Holy Belt and the Precious Wood of the Cross came into the hands of the Bulgarians and remained with them. In 1101, Lazar, the Knez of Serbia, offered this cross, with the Holy Belt and the Precious Wood, to the Holy and Royal Monastery of Vatopedi on the Holy Mountain, where it is preserved to this day. On the back of the cross is an inscription in Serbian which, translated into Greek, reads: ‘I, Lazar, in Christ our God, Knez of Serbia and Emperor of Greece, dedicate this mighty weapon, together with the pure Belt of my Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), to the Monastery of Vatopedi of my realm, 1101.’ From then until 1963, the Holy Belt did not leave Vatopedi Monastery. That year it was taken to Athens for veneration during the celebrations of the millennium of the Holy Mountain.

Today, as the Church celebrates the placing of the Holy Belt of the Theotokos in worship, we have another opportunity to express our devotion, love, and gratitude to the Mother of God, who is also our Mother. At the same time, the feast urges us to wear a spiritual belt ourselves: the belt of watchfulness and, especially, chastity. Wearing a belt shows that a person is prepared and ready; loosening it suggests a slackening of body and spirit. The Lord said: ‘Let your waists be girded and your lamps burning, and be

like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks, they may open the door to him at once.’ Be ready at all times, with your belts fastened and your lamps lit, like people waiting for their master to return from a wedding, so they can open the door as soon as he arrives and knocks. And a little later He says: ‘Be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’ Be ready, because the Son of Man will come when you do not expect Him. Keep preparing yourselves. What matters is not when the Lord will come. What matters is that, when He comes, He will

find us ready. Christ will come for all of us at His Second Coming. Holy Scripture, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse (Book of Revelation), the Annunciation, the Annunciation, the Kingdom of Heaven. He shines forth and comes continually, especially during the Divine Liturgy. At the Lord’s Second Coming, He will simply be revealed completely, in all His fullness. So Christ is continually coming. ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.’ The question is whether we hear His knock, whether we want Him to enter, and whether we are ready to receive Him. Or have we turned our attention to other things, so that we neither see Him coming nor hear Him knocking? Have we given our hearts elsewhere, leaving us with neither the desire to welcome Him nor the preparation needed for Him to remain? We need to take our lives seriously, and to do so now. ‘Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.’ Who will give us this time back if we lose it? A time will come when we will seek these days and will not find them.

Let us begin today, right now, to prepare our souls to receive Christ and His grace, to keep receiving that grace, and to undergo that good and divine transformation. ‘Blessed are those servants whom the Lord finds watching when He comes. Amen, I say to you: He will gird Himself, have them sit at the table, and come and serve them.’
