The Lord’s raising of Lazarus, who had been four days in the tomb, is counted among the great feasts of the Lord, specifically among the Twelve Great Feasts. The service is festive and resurrectional. It is a prelude to the Lord’s Resurrection and to our own resurrection; and yesterday the whole fast of Holy and Great Lent came to an end. Because of the great events in the Lord’s life, memorial services with kollyva are not celebrated from today through Bright Saturday. Until Pascha Sunday, even the service for a Saint whose feast falls on those days is omitted.
Saint Lazarus, the righteous friend of our Lord, whose raising from the dead we celebrate today, was Jewish by birth and a Pharisee by religious affiliation. He was born in Bethany, a town in Judea near the eastern foot of the Mount of Olives, about two and a half kilometres from Jerusalem. His father, it is said, was Simon the Pharisee, and his sisters were Martha and Mary, who are mentioned many times in the Gospels. At that time Christ was teaching and travelling through Judea for the salvation of humankind. He often visited Simon’s house and spoke with him there.
Simon believed in the resurrection of the dead. So the Lord became friends with that household: Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary, who welcomed Him and often served Him. As the saving Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ drew near, the Lord performed this great miracle as a prelude to His own Resurrection. He had already raised Jairus’s daughter and the widow’s son. But the raising of Lazarus surpassed those earlier miracles, because Lazarus had been dead and buried for four days.
The account of this miracle, the Lord’s raising of Lazarus from the dead, is as follows. While Lazarus was ill, Christ and His disciples were in the country beyond the Jordan. When Lazarus died, the Lord knew it, for He knows all things, and said to His disciples, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.” They thought He meant ordinary sleep, so He told them plainly, “Lazarus has died.” Two days later the Lord took His disciples and returned to Judea. As He approached Bethany, Lazarus’s sisters met Him and said, “Lord, if You had been here, our brother would not have died.”
“And even now we know that, if You will it, You can raise him.” The Lord asked, “Where have you laid him?” They all went together to Lazarus’s tomb, and the Lord commanded them to remove the large stone that sealed it. Martha tried to stop Him, saying, “Lord, by now there is a smell, for he has been dead four days.” But the Lord corrected her. When they removed the stone, He prayed and wept. Then He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” At once the dead man rose and came out of the tomb, still bound in his burial cloths.
At the Lord’s command, they unbound him, and he went home as everyone marvelled. This astonishing miracle stirred the envy of the chief priests and the Pharisees, who were looking for a chance to kill the Lord. They wanted to kill Lazarus too, because many Jews went to see him alive again and came to believe in Christ. So the Lord went to the town of Ephraim, while Lazarus fled to Cyprus. There he was later ordained bishop of Kition. It is said that while Lazarus was there, the Lady Theotokos, who was still living on earth,
brought him an omophorion, which she had sewn and embroidered with her own hands. Saint Lazarus the Righteous lived well and in a manner pleasing to God for thirty years after he was raised. Then he fell asleep again and went to the Lord whom he loved, at the age of sixty-three. He was buried near Kition, and many miracles were worked. This second tomb of Saint Lazarus survives to this day and bears the inscription, “Lazarus, four days in the tomb, friend of Christ.” It is also said that throughout the years he lived after being raised from the dead, righteous Lazarus never laughed, except when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel.
He smiled and said, “One bit of earth steals another.” He lived this way because he always remembered the bitterness of death and the terror of Hell. The wise emperor Leo brought the Saint’s precious relic to Constantinople and placed it before the sanctuary, on the right side of the church of Saint Lazarus that he had built. It remained there for many years, giving off an indescribable fragrance.
“Before Your Passion, to give us assurance, You raised Lazarus from the dead, O Christ our God.” Holy and Great Lent, with its struggle of metanoia—repentance—and especially fasting, was meant to cleanse our souls and bodies of the passions. In this way we prepare ourselves and become worthy to celebrate the Lord’s pure Passion and life-giving Resurrection in a fitting way, pleasing to God and beneficial to our souls. We prepare to be crucified and raised with Him. And now we stand at the threshold of His Holy Passion, for the Jews seized upon this miracle above all others as a reason for their fury against the Lord Jesus Christ.
In very ancient times, the God-bearing Fathers—or rather, the Holy Apostles—appointed this day for the celebration of this great and supernatural miracle. John the Evangelist alone wrote about it. The other Evangelists did not write about it because Lazarus was still alive then, and his very presence proclaimed the miracle. By the time John the Evangelist wrote his Gospel, Lazarus had died, so John recorded this wondrous event lest it be forgotten. It shows us the truth that Christ is the Lord of life and death, that He is the Son of God: true God, almighty and all-good. It also shows that
there is a resurrection of the dead, and that Christ can bring it about with ease. It also reminds us and assures us that at Christ’s Second Coming, we shall all rise, just as Lazarus did. Let us pray and prepare to rise, not to Hell, but to eternal life. May we be counted worthy to sing to the conqueror of death: “Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
