On November 21, our Church celebrates the Entry of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, into the Temple.

The virtuous couple Joachim and Anna were descended from the royal tribe of Judah and the house of David. But Anna was barren, and they remained childless. This grieved them both, for among the Jews childlessness was considered a disgrace. The priests would not accept offerings at the Temple from childless couples, whom they regarded as sinners. So Joachim and Anna prayed and fasted with aching hearts, asking God for a child, whether a boy or a girl, and promising to dedicate the child to Him. God heard their fervent prayer. In the natural way, they conceived the child for whom they had prayed: Mary, a beautiful daughter full of grace, ready to receive all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Through her, God's plan for the salvation of humanity would be fulfilled. After Mary was born, had grown, and had been weaned, Joachim and Anna took her, at the age of three, to the Temple in a procession of young women carrying lamps. There they offered her to God through Zechariah, the high priest, as they had promised. The high priest—or rather, the priest Zechariah—was enlightened by the Holy Spirit. He welcomed her with joy and reverently stretched out his arms,

kissed her, and brought her into the innermost sanctuary of the Temple, the Holy of Holies. In a few years she would become the radiant throne of the King of Glory, our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ. Zechariah felt the same joy in his heart that the patriarch Noah had felt when he stretched out his hands to receive the dove and bring it into the ark. It had returned with an olive branch in its beak, a sign of peace and of the end of humanity's enmity with God. According to Saint Tarasios, the Theotokos received the food of angels through an angel,

and, like a pure dove guarding her virginity, she prayed with thanksgiving and an open heart to the Creator of the Temple, of heaven, and of earth. The Archangel Gabriel fed, taught, and cared for her with spiritual food, beyond anything material. Gabriel nourished the maiden within; soon he would come to greet her with the words, ‘Rejoice!’ This spiritual food strengthened her human nature, while she kept her body pure, purer even than the bodiless powers. In the Temple of Solomon—the third Temple, built under Herod the Great in 17 BC—the Holy of Holies

was the innermost square chamber, twenty cubits long and twenty cubits wide. It was lit by the ten lamps of the Holy Place, and there stood the Ark of the Covenant with its two great golden cherubim. As the Apostle Paul says, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year with the blood of the sacrifice, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance. This great feast took place on the tenth day of the seventh Jewish month. On that day the high priest entered the Holy of Holies alone to perform the appointed service, assisted by many priests. So our Most Holy Theotokos entered the Temple, into the Holy of Holies, as the true Ark,

foreshadowed by the gold-covered ark of the Old Testament. She entered because she was the true and chosen vessel of God's saving plan. She was foreshadowed by the golden jar containing the manna from heaven, the seven-branched lampstand of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the golden censer. For she would bear the fire of the Godhead without being consumed. In her, the great and wondrous Mystery of godliness would be accomplished: the incarnation of God the Word (Logos), for our salvation and that of the whole world. Mary, that beautiful daughter, lived in the Holy of Holies for twelve years like an angel in the flesh. There, according to Saint Gregory Palamas,

she was freed from every material attachment and set aside every worldly tie. She rose even above concern for her own body and gathered her nous, her spiritual mind, inward through attentiveness and unceasing prayer. Coming fully to herself and rising above the many kinds of logismoi, those intrusive thoughts that crowd the mind, she found a new and hidden path to heaven. With her nous she passed beyond all created things and saw, more clearly than Moses, the glory and grace of God, which lie beyond the bodily senses. This is a gracious and holy vision granted to pure souls and spiritual minds. Sharing in that vision, the All-Pure One became, as the inspired hymn writers say,

a shining cloud of truly living water, the dawn of a mystical day, and a fiery chariot for God the Word (Logos).

The Orthodox Church of Christ, drawing on the traditions of the prophets and apostles and the teachings of the God-inspired Holy Fathers, accepts this Entry as an event and celebrates it on November 21 as another feast of the Theotokos. The Church calls it ‘the prelude to God's good pleasure and the proclamation of humanity's salvation.’ The Entry of the Lady Theotokos into the Holy of Holies is at once a departure and an approach: a departure from the world and an approach to God; a release from the world and a giving of oneself to God. It is a shining example for us to follow.

Each according to our strength, let us turn our nous, our spiritual mind, and our hearts from earthly things to heavenly things, from the flesh to the spirit. Let us set our longing on what lasts instead of what passes away. Let us turn away from bodily pleasures, which have proved to be a lure that harms the soul and soon fade.

Let us desire the spiritual gifts that remain incorruptible. Let us lift our nous, our spiritual mind, to the heavenly sanctuary, the Holy of Holies where the Theotokos now dwells. Then, through her intercession, may we inherit not only the blessings of the present but also the lasting blessings to come.
