Today, September 8, our Holy Church celebrates the Nativity of the Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. We also commemorate the Holy Martyrs Rufus, Rufianus, Severus, and Artemidorus; the Holy New Martyr Athanasios, who suffered martyrdom in Thessaloniki in 1774; and Saint Sophronios, Bishop of Akhtala in Iberia.
A new world and a wondrous Paradise: in her and from her, a new Adam was formed. He restores the old Adam and makes the whole world new. The deceiver cannot deceive Him; instead, He outwits the deceiver and frees those who were tricked into slavery to sin. Today, a wondrous book was prepared on earth, able to bear more than written words: it bears the living Word (Logos) of God Himself. This heavenly Word is no passing utterance that fades away. He rescues from corruption those who draw near to Him. He is not formed by the movement of a human tongue, but is begotten of God the Father before all ages.
Today there appeared a living tabernacle of God, made without hands, and a spiritual ark of the Bread of Life, who truly came down to us from heaven. Today the prophesied rod sprang from the root of Jesse. From it came a flower that never withers. It restores our withered nature, which had fallen away from the unfading place of delight. It makes our nature flourish again and grants it life that never fades, raising it to heaven and bringing it into Paradise. This is the rod with which the Great Shepherd led His spiritual flock to everlasting pastures. Supported by this rod, our nature finds help.
It walks readily toward heaven, leaving the earth below to those who are drawn downward because they have no support. This new world, this wondrous Paradise and wondrous book, this spiritual tabernacle and ark of God, this truth sprung from the earth and much-praised rod of Jesse, is the Maiden who remains Ever-Virgin before and after giving birth. Today we celebrate her birth from a barren woman. For Joachim and Anna lived together blamelessly before God, yet the Israelites regarded them as blameworthy under the law because they had no children.
At that time, the hope of immortality had not yet been revealed, so continuing the family line seemed essential. But now this Virgin, whose birth we celebrate today, has given us immortality through her virginal giving of birth. We no longer need children to carry on our line for that reason. Back then, however, the Israelites prized having many children even above virtue, and considered childlessness such a misfortune that these righteous people were insulted for having no children more than they were praised for their virtue.
Grieved by these insults, the righteous couple remembered Abraham and Sarah, and others who had suffered the sorrow of childlessness. They also remembered the remedy some had found for that sorrow, and decided to turn to God in prayer. Joachim, a man of self-control, went into the wilderness and stayed there fasting. He prayed to God to make him a father, and did not cease praying or leave until he received assurance that his request had been heard. Anna withdrew to a nearby garden and, with an aching heart, cried out to the Lord, asking Him to bless her as He had blessed Sarah. The Lord heard and blessed them, promising to grant their request. And today He fulfilled that promise and gave them a daughter
more wonderful than any wonder ever seen. She would give birth to the Creator of all, who brought the human race to theosis, made earth into heaven, made God the Son of Man, and made human beings sons of God. But why was she born of a barren womb? To end her parents’ sorrow and remove their shame, and to foreshadow how, through her, the sorrow and ancestral curse of the human race would be lifted. Just as there was no Virgin Mother and Mother of God before or after her, and just as no one else dwelt in the Holy of Holies before or after her,
so too the womb of Anna, a woman of self-control, carried no other child, either before or after her. The Mother of God had to be a Virgin, a descendant of David, and born at the right time for our salvation. That time was drawing near. Among David’s descendants, none of the childless couples then living surpassed Joachim and Anna in virtue, nobility of character, and lineage. So this childless couple was chosen over those with many children. The daughter of surpassing virtue would be conceived by parents rich in virtue, and the all-pure one by parents of exceptional self-control. Their self-control, joined with prayer and ascesis, or ascetic discipline, would bear as its fruit
the pure mother of Virginity itself: a Virginity that gave birth in the flesh, without corruption, to the One who was begotten in His divinity before all ages of the Father, who is without a mother. The Theotokos was born with ancestral sin, but was cleansed of it when the Holy Spirit came upon her at the Annunciation. Thank you.
Let us close today’s account of the saints with the end of Saint Gregory Palamas’s homily on the saving Nativity of our most pure Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. He urges us: Offer together to the Virgin whose feast we celebrate today the gift most dear and fitting to her: your sanctification and purity of body, through self-control and prayer. See how self-control, fasting, and prayer, joined with katanyxis, or compunction, made Joachim and Anna the parents of a vessel for God. It was so choice a vessel that it would bear more than the divine name, as Paul says;
it would bear the very One whose name is wonderful. If we too, alongside the other virtues, persevere in prayer and dwell thoughtfully in the temple of God, we will find within ourselves the treasured purity of heart that can receive God and reveal Him to us. Isaiah calls this purity, and the soul’s disposition toward God that flows from it, a saving spirit conceived within us. He says to God: ‘For fear of You, O Lord, we conceived, suffered the pains of childbirth, and brought forth Your spirit of salvation, which we have brought forth upon the earth.’ Do you see how barren and fruitless souls come to bear good fruit?
The prophet adds, ‘We shall not fall, but those who dwell on the earth shall fall.’ He means those who wallow in earthly ways of thinking and in the passions. So, brothers and sisters, if we too want to dwell in heaven rather than on earth, and to rise continually toward the heights of God instead of falling to the earth and to the sin that drags us down, let us fear God, turn away from evil, and return to Him through good works. Let us hasten to wash away the evil lodged in our souls through self-control and prayer, and to change our inward logismoi, our intrusive thoughts, for the better,
so that, as the prophet says, through calling upon God we may conceive and bring forth the spirit of our salvation. We have as our helper the one given to her parents today in answer to their prayers and their life pleasing to God. She turned their sorrow to joy, broke the ancestral curse, and ended the birth pangs of Eve, our first mother, when she gave birth without pain, in virginity, to Christ. To Him belong glory, honor, and worship, together with His Father without beginning and the All-Holy and Life-Giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
