On this same day, the seventh Sunday of Pascha, we commemorate the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea and its 318 God-bearing Fathers.
The great First Ecumenical Council of the 318 God-bearing Fathers gathered at Nicaea in Bithynia in AD 325, during the reign of Constantine the Great. The Fathers of the Church appointed this Sunday for its commemoration for the following reason. Our Lord Jesus Christ had completed all His work of salvation in the flesh and ascended into heaven, to the throne of His majesty. The holy and God-bearing Fathers wanted to show that the Son of God, who was perfect God, also became perfect man; and that, having taken flesh, been crucified and buried, and risen from the dead,
He ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of the majesty of God. This holy First Ecumenical Council rightly proclaimed and confessed Him to be of one essence with the Father and equal to Him in honor. So, immediately after the feast of His glorious Ascension, they established a feast honoring these Fathers, who proclaimed that the One who ascended in the flesh is true God and, in the flesh, perfect man. Constantine the Great convened this holy First Ecumenical Council for the following reason. The persecutions of the Church of Christ by the rulers of Rome had just ended, and peace had come to the Christian world.
By divine providence, Constantine of blessed memory came to the throne. He first placed his royal authority under the crucified Jesus Christ and, through Christ’s unconquerable power, overthrew the godless tyrants. Like another sun, he sent forth the gentle rays of peace. Prisoners were released, exiles were called home, churches were opened, and new ones were built. The whole world offered glory and thanksgiving to the Savior who loves mankind for the peace He had unexpectedly granted them. Then, suddenly, a new disturbance arose, great and terrible, beginning in Alexandria, Egypt. Surely there is hardly anyone
who has not heard the ill-famed name of Arius. He gave rise to a grave and terrible heresy, teaching that the Son and Word (Logos) of God was a creature of God, an instrument through which God made the world, and therefore of a different essence and nature from the Father. Arius was a senior priest and teacher of Holy Scripture, appointed by Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria. Because he held a prominent position, his impious and corrupt teaching soon spread even among many bishops, including some of the best known. Seeing this, the holy Alexander tried and deposed him at a local Synod. But afterward the evil spread still further, through the cities of Egypt,
into Palestine, and as far as Thrace and the Black Sea. Everywhere, blasphemy against the only-begotten Son of God was spreading. Disputes, scandals, and bitter conflicts broke out continually among the Christian people. The devout emperor Constantine heard of these things every day. The Ascension, the Annunciation,
When the holy Fathers had gathered at Nicaea in the place prepared for them, they all took their seats. The emperor entered and remained standing until the Fathers invited him to sit. Even then, he sat on a very humble, simple chair instead of his imperial throne. Such was his reverence for the priests of the true God, especially because he could see the marks of martyrdom on many of them. The devout emperor then spoke, urging them to examine the divine teachings carefully and teach the world what it should believe about the Holy Trinity. It was for this purpose that the Holy Spirit had gathered them through him.
They examined the views of Arius. After much debate and careful study of Holy Scripture, the holy Fathers condemned Arius’s deeply impious teachings, as well as Arius himself and those who agreed with him, because they refused to confess the true teachings of the Catholic Church: that the Father is always the Father, the Son is always the Son, and the Son is unchanging, unalterable, and of one essence with the Father. Having established these teachings, the holy Synod was the first to set down in writing the statement of faith that all Christians are to confess. We call this written statement the holy Creed. The Second Ecumenical Council completed it,
expanding its teaching on the Holy Spirit, since the heretics had not yet spoken blasphemously about the hypostasis, the person, of the All-Holy Spirit. The same holy Synod also established how and when we should celebrate Holy Pascha, so that we would no longer celebrate it together with the Jews, as had happened before. It also issued 28 Canons concerning good order and the life of the Church. After the blessed Fathers had signed, the great emperor Constantine, Equal to the Apostles, signed and ratified the holy Creed in red letters. It is said that two of those holy Fathers died during the Council, before they could sign. So, by the emperor’s command...
they placed the decree of the holy Synod in their coffins and sealed them with imperial seals. And, wondrously, the decree was found to have been confirmed by those Fathers too, according to the unfathomable judgments of the holy God. When the holy Synod ended, Constantine the Great invited all those holy Fathers to the city he had recently built, which was now complete. They went and blessed it, praying that it would remain a reigning city through the ages. At the emperor’s command, they dedicated it and entrusted it to the protection of the Mother of God. Then each returned to his own land. We should also speak here of God’s just judgment, which
later came upon the deeply impious Arius. After the Council dispersed, Arius’s supporters could not bear being separated from the Catholic, the Orthodox Church, following the anathema of the Ecumenical Council. They did everything they could, and Arius, the leader of the heresy, appeared before the emperor. He gave him a written statement saying that he repented, accepted what the holy Synod had taught, and sought communion with the Orthodox. But Arius’s repentance was deceitful, contrived to mislead, as later events showed. When Arius appeared before the emperor, Constantine asked whether he truly confessed what the holy Synod had decreed. Arius replied:
“Emperor, I do indeed confess these things.” As he said this, however, he laid his hand on his chest, where he had hidden a statement of his own blasphemous teachings. With this gesture, he was craftily indicating those teachings. The devout emperor was convinced and, believing Arius’s repentance to be sincere, asked the holy Alexander, Patriarch of the city, to receive Arius into the Church and serve with him. But that holy Father knew Arius’s obstinacy and was uneasy about receiving him, for he doubted his repentance. Unable to object to the emperor, Alexander turned to God, who knows the secrets of human hearts, and pleaded with Him through fervent tears
to show a sign from above as to whether it was pleasing to Him for Alexander to enter into communion with Arius. It is even said that he prayed, “O Master, if Arius is to join the assembly tomorrow, take me from this life.” When the day appointed by the emperor arrived, a Sunday on which they were to serve together, Arius left the palace at the appointed hour, accompanied by his supporters. As he walked toward the church, fear seized him, along with pains in his stomach. Unable to hold himself, he asked where he could relieve himself. They showed him the public latrine. He went in, but never came out.
There divine judgment overtook the man who had blasphemed against the only-begotten Son, and his entrails spilled out. His supporters were put to shame. The crowds of Orthodox believers, and the devout emperor himself, glorified God, for He had answered this question of faith and brought down the pride of those heretics.
Paul, speaking to the priests of the Church in Ephesus, foretold that fierce wolves would come in and would not spare the flock. He also warned that they would arise from within the Church, speaking perverse things to draw disciples after themselves. Heretics such as Arius, whom the First Ecumenical Council of the holy Fathers condemned, have appeared throughout the centuries. Arius was, in quotation marks, a “moral and good” cleric, but he was full of arrogance and self-importance. Relying on philosophical reasoning, he rejected Revelation, above all the truth that Christ is true God.
The holy Fathers resisted because this distortion of the teaching changed, and still changes, the whole of life. When we distort Revelation, we never reach what it reveals. Theology is not a matter of speculation or human ideas. It is bound up with theosis, our life and our very being transformed by God. When the truth of doctrine is distorted, the truth of life is distorted too, and salvation does not follow. Arius has many followers today. We especially mean the millenarians, or those called Jehovah’s Witnesses. Like Arius, they distort Holy Scripture by claiming that Christ is a created being.
That is why we must be on guard against these wolves. As we live the life of the Church, we should seek to know its truths for ourselves and study Holy Scripture so that we can refute their distorted arguments. And if, for now, we cannot draw on experiences of our own, let us at least follow faithfully the experiences and revelations of the holy Fathers and our holy shepherds, exactly as they handed them down to us, so that the way to our salvation remains open.
