On August 29, our Church commemorates the beheading of the precious head of the holy and glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John; Saint Theodora of Thessalonica; and Saint Arcadius, the wonderworking Bishop of Arsinoe in Cyprus. We also celebrate the placing of the holy relic of Saint Joseph the Sanctified, known as Samakos.

John, the Baptist of the Lord, was the son of the high priest Zechariah and Elizabeth. Christ Himself testified that John was the greatest of all those born of women, the most distinguished of the prophets. He leapt in his mother’s womb and proclaimed Christ both to the living on earth and to the souls of the departed in Hades. This is the great John, marked out for holiness from his mother’s womb: a herald of truth, a defender of justice, and an advocate of self-control and purity. He believed that corruption among rulers was the gravest crime and the most contagious wound.

For when a torrent of lawlessness and immorality flows from the palace, it will soon engulf the other rulers and the people as well. Herod Antipas sent away his lawful wife, the daughter of the Arab king Aretas, so that he could openly live with Herodias, his niece and the wife of his brother Herod Philip. The people of Galilee and Perea murmured against this scandal, but fear of the tetrarch’s power kept them from doing more than complain. John, however, spoke with prophetic boldness. He never ceased to rebuke Herod to his face, saying those famous words: “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

Herod put up with the rebuke. Despite his moral wretchedness, he felt a certain reverence for the Prophet. He also knew how much influence John had over the people and feared their criticism, since they regarded John as a prophet. Herodias saw things differently. Hardened and without conscience, driven by a fierce lust for power, proud and ruthless, she hated John with all her heart and never stopped pressing Herod to destroy him. For a time, Herod found ways to put her off. But Herodias kept watch and plotted for the right opportunity. At last, she found it.

Herod celebrated one of his birthdays at the fortress of Machaerus in Perea. Because the fortress stood near the border, it had often been a source of dispute between Herod Antipas and Aretas, his former father-in-law.

John had already been held prisoner in that fortress for some time. Herod had ordered his arrest, thinking it might calm Herodias and spare him her constant, relentless demands. On the night of the celebration, the tetrarch gave a banquet for his nobles and the leading men of Galilee. He drank his fill and became drunk.

When it was time for dancing, the scheming Herodias secretly put her plot into motion. She sent Salome, her daughter by her first husband, to dance. Salome was still a young girl, but cunning and cruel, and remarkably skilled and graceful in her dancing. The guests greeted her with admiring cheers. Herod himself cheered loudest, carried away by the wine. As soon as she finished, the tetrarch, so drunk he scarcely knew what he was saying, called her over and asked what she wanted from him. He would give it to her at once. Salome seemed hesitant, so Herod made a greater promise. He swore to her that

he would give her whatever she asked, even up to half his kingdom. “Let me ask my mother,” she said, and hurried to her. The moment Herodias heard of Herod’s oath, she felt a savage, murderous joy. In her frenzy she took the pleasure of a tigress. She bent toward her daughter, took her by the shoulders, and answered the question, “What should I ask for?” with these words: “The head of John the Baptist.” Then she urged her back toward the banquet hall. Her mother’s demand did not disturb Salome at all; she seemed almost to smile. The daughter appeared worthy of her mother. She hurried to Herod and said, “I want you to give me, at once, on a platter, the

head of John the Baptist.” She wanted John’s head on a platter right then. They feared that, if time passed, Herod might sober up, change his mind, and refuse to kill him. Salome did not merely ask Herod to send someone to kill John in prison. She demanded his head on a platter, suspecting that Herod might otherwise spare a man whom everyone respected as righteous and holy. The tetrarch may never have expected such a request. But in corrupt souls, conscience offers little effective resistance, while reason and shame become terribly twisted. And though the king was deeply grieved, because of his oaths and the guests at his table,

he would not refuse her. He was ashamed before his friends to appear a liar, yet he did not fear God, the Maker of Heaven and Earth. He only pretended to be sorrowful and indignant. In the end, he acted in keeping with his character. He had sworn an oath, and he feared that his guests would accuse him of breaking his royal word. So he agreed to carry out the girl’s request. It would have been better if he had never sworn. But once he had, he should have broken such a lawless oath. As the Prophet David says: “I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep the judgments of Your righteousness.” And it is clear that Herod’s grief was only an appearance,

not genuine sorrow. Anyone can see this. If he had truly been sorry at the thought of killing the Forerunner, he could have said: “I promised to give what lies within my power, even up to half my kingdom. But I have no authority to murder a man, especially one who is righteous and holy, a Prophet and the Baptist, of whom the whole world is not worthy.” It is quite possible that Herod welcomed his oath, or even made it as part of an earlier plot, so that he could claim to be bound before God to commit the murder. Perhaps it was for this reason that the Lord called him a fox. He sent a soldier of the guard into the fortress prison

and ordered the Baptist killed. Soon afterward, while the banquet was still in full swing, the soldier returned. He carried a platter, and on it lay the bloodstained, precious head of the glorious Forerunner, of whom the Lord Himself had said that no greater man had been born. Herod ordered the head to be given to Salome. The dreadful girl hurried to bring it to her mother, who took a hyena’s pleasure in it. Herodias then buried that precious head in a hidden place in Herod’s garden. Later, however, the holy Forerunner revealed its location to two monks, who found it

while on their way to venerate the holy places in Jerusalem. In later times, portions of his head were found in various places. One portion remains to this day at the Monastery of the Holy Forerunner in Jerusalem and is associated with miracles. His precious body was buried by his disciples in Sebaste of Caesarea in Palestine. Later, however, the impious emperor Julian the Apostate burned it in Antioch. Even so, portions of his precious relics are found in many places. Such was the end of the Lord’s Forerunner. He sealed his life with martyrdom, and his example remains, and will remain until the end of the ages, precious to all who wish to serve the truth

regardless of the dangers and sacrifices. Yet the blood of the prophets burns those who shed it. In AD 37, Herod went to Rome to ask the emperor Caligula for the title of king. Instead of a crown, Caligula gave him exile in Lugdunum in Gaul, present-day Lyon. Herodias followed him there, without a crown or power, or the slightest sign of royal standing. For rulers such as these, the punishment was terrible. They died in Spain, and their memory remained hateful. Still more terrible was the punishment said to have befallen Herodias’s daughter Salome, the shameless dancer. It is said that as she crossed a frozen river,

the ice gave way beneath her feet. Her body sank, while the ice severed the head that had brought about the beheading of the holy Forerunner.

Saint Gregory Palamas reflects on the words, “Because of his oaths and the guests at his table, he would not refuse her.” He observes that Herod murdered the holy Forerunner because of those present: he did not want them to think badly of him. And the Saint cries out, “Alas, how many evils spring from the craving for praise!” How often we, too, act and sin because we worry about what people will say. We seek to please people rather than God. We want human approval rather than God’s. We prefer the glory of this world to the glory of God. The Saint goes further.

He looks more deeply into the matter and broadens it. He compares the human nous, the spiritual intellect that ought to govern soul and body, to King Herod. He compares John the Forerunner to conscience, and the passions to adulteresses and dancers. He says: “Although our nous was created to be king and ruler over the passions, when they entice it, it is led into shameful slavery and disgraceful deeds.” So when people enslaved to the passions are reproved by their conscience, they first grow angry and resentful. In a sense, they imprison their conscience, as Herod imprisoned John, because they do not want to hear it. Nor do they want to hear

the words written to turn us away from sin and urge us toward every good thing. But when they come under the sway of Herodias, who lives unlawfully with them—that is, their sinful way of thinking—they kill the inborn word of grace within them, their conscience. They silence it completely, refuse to believe, and argue against God-inspired Scripture. They become utterly without conscience and set themselves against the Word of God, just as Herod set himself against John. Today, then, two images stand before us, utterly opposed to one another. The first, Herod’s, seems to give a little pleasure and honor

for a short time to those who choose to live by it. Afterward, it hands them over to endless and unbearable dishonor and tribulation. The other image, that of the holy Forerunner, allows those who follow it to suffer for a little while, then grants them glory and divine joy beyond words, true and eternal. If we live according to the desires of the flesh, we will die in imitation of the flesh-bound Herod, as the Apostle says. But if, with the help of the Holy Spirit and with John’s zeal, we resist the evil desires and deeds of the body, we will live forever. Let us, then, avoid becoming like Herod.

Let us hasten instead to imitate the grace of the Forerunner.
