On this Sunday, we celebrate the glorious and radiant feast of Palm Sunday for this reason: After Saint Lazarus was raised from the dead, many saw this extraordinary miracle and believed in Christ. Moved by envy, the Jewish leaders decided in their assembly to put both Christ and Lazarus to death. So the Lord left that place, giving way to their malice. Then, as John the Evangelist tells us, six days before Passover He came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived—the man He had raised from the dead. They prepared a supper for Him there, and Martha, Lazarus’s sister, served.
Mary, his other sister, anointed the Lord’s precious feet with costly ointment and wiped them with her hair. The next day, Sunday, Christ sent two of His disciples to bring a donkey and her colt. They laid their garments on the colt, and the Lord sat upon it. Thus He whose throne is heaven and whose footstool is the earth entered Jerusalem seated on a young donkey, as it is written in the prophecy of Zechariah: “Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Proclaim it, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you, righteous and bringing salvation, gentle and riding on a beast of burden, on a young colt.”
Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. The king who now comes to you is neither arrogant nor proud. He is so gentle, humble, and meek that He rides no proud horse with a golden bridle, but a lowly donkey’s colt, held in little regard. According to the commandment of the Law, the Jewish Passover was to be celebrated in no city except Jerusalem: “You may not sacrifice the Passover in any of the towns that the Lord your God gives you, but only in the place the Lord your God chooses for His name to dwell.” For this reason, great crowds gathered in Jerusalem every year
to celebrate Passover there. News of the wondrous raising of Lazarus had spread through Jerusalem, and when people heard that Jesus was coming, a great crowd took palm branches and went out of the city to meet Him, crying, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” Some spread their garments on the road for Christ to pass over. The people did and said these things because they believed Christ was the long-awaited Messiah, coming to Jerusalem to sit on David’s throne and reign over Israel. The palm branches are symbols of victory.
“Hosanna” is a Hebrew word meaning something like “Save us now.” This hymn was sung by adults and even by nursing infants, moved by the Holy Spirit, as David, the prophet and king, had foretold: “Out of the mouths of babes and nursing infants You have prepared praise.” Among the Hebrews, a palm branch was called a baion, a tender branch. The branches showed that Christ is the victor over death. It was customary for people to welcome victors with branches. The colt represented the Gentiles, the people who had worshipped idols. Christ sat upon it and rested there, victorious and triumphant,
and is proclaimed King of all the earth. When Christ entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred. This was the response of ordinary people, who were innocent and guileless. But the scribes and Pharisees, consumed by envy, hated the Lord all the more. Envy blinds a person to what is good for him. At times the Lord withdrew; at other times He appeared openly and spoke to them in parables. The disciples, still growing in understanding, did not fully grasp what was happening until the Lord rose from the dead and gave them illumination and the Holy Spirit. Then they became mature in faith and came to know the divine Mysteries.
Today’s feast of the Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem is among the oldest feasts of our Church. In Jerusalem, the faithful would go to the Mount of Olives, with the bishop seated on a donkey’s colt to represent Christ. We too remember this event in worship and celebrate it with joy, holding blessed palms as symbols of victory. As the sacred hymnographer says, we bear the symbols of victory: victory over death, the world, and the devil. The palms also symbolize the virtues that prepare us to receive and live through Holy and Great Week, the week of the Lord’s venerable Passion, and His radiant
and life-giving Resurrection.
When our Fathers speak about the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, they recall how victorious kings and generals of their own time entered cities in triumph, displaying great authority and power. Christ does not display power in that way. He does not wish to impose Himself on people. The Lord Almighty, the Son and Word (Logos) who is without beginning and eternal together with the Father, the true King of Glory whom the Cherubim cannot gaze upon without awe, enters the Holy City gentle and bringing salvation, riding on a donkey’s colt. Saint Epiphanius observes that Christ
had scepters and trumpets, yet appeared in utter poverty. He was not escorted with swords, weapons, and spears, as earthly rulers of that time were honored, but came in the deepest humility. He had no armed guards, shields, gold-inlaid emblems, helmet, or breastplate, but perfect gentleness, boundless innocence, and extraordinary modesty. Christ’s humility is neither outward show nor pretense. It expresses His love and simplicity. Because His love is infinite, His humility is infinite too. And the Saints who came to share in the grace of Christ and in His life
also came to share in His love and humility. This is the strength of Christ and of Christianity. According to Saint Isaac the Syrian, humility is the garment of divinity. Whoever truly puts it on becomes like Him who descended from His heights, veiled the greatness of His majesty, and covered His glory with humility. So if we try to promote our Christianity through displays of worldly power, wealth, luxury, and success by the world’s standards, we are far from the Spirit and grace of Christ, and far from the spirit and lived experience of Holy Week.
