Today, October 28, our Church commemorates the holy martyrs Terentius and Neonilla and their children Nitas, Sarbilos, Hierax, Theodoulos, Phokas, Vilos, and Eunike; Saint Stephen the Sabbaite; the holy martyrs Terentius, Africanus, Maximus, Pompeius, and thirty-six others; Saint Firmilian, Bishop of Caesarea, and Malchion the Sophist, Priest of Antioch, who deposed Paul of Samosata; Saint Febronia, daughter of the Emperor Heraclius; the holy hieromartyr Kyriakos; the holy martyr Anna, mother of Saint Kyriakos; and Saint Athanasius, Patriarch of Constantinople.

We also commemorate the holy new martyrs Angelis, Manuel, George, and Nicholas. And, transferred from October 1, we celebrate the Holy Protection of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos (God-bearer) and Ever-Virgin Mary.

The holy martyr Terentius, his wife Neonilla, and all their children worshipped God in secret. For this they were accused before the governor and brought to trial. Because they confessed Christ as the true God and mocked the idols, they were mercilessly torn with hooks, and vinegar and salt were poured into their wounds. As the saints suffered, they prayed and quietly encouraged one another to endure martyrdom. The Lord heard their prayer: angels freed them from their bonds unseen and healed their wounds. The unbelievers were astonished and afraid. Then the saints were thrown into prison, and the next day they were beaten with clubs.

They were bound to wheels and beaten again. By the grace of God they remained unharmed. They were thrown to wild beasts, but the beasts did not touch them. Next they were placed in great cauldrons of boiling pitch, and again they came to no harm. Seeing that the tortures could not injure the saints, the unbelievers beheaded them with a sword. Thus the blessed ones received the crowns of martyrdom.

Stephen the Sabbaite lived toward the end of the eighth century after Christ. He became a monk while still young. At the Lavra of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, where he lived as a monk, the holy fathers taught him the fear of God, every virtue, and the ascetic life. Having entered monastic life so young, he had never tasted the pleasures of the world. As he grew in a life devoted to God and shone in obedience and hesychia, inner stillness, he was counted worthy of the grace of the episcopacy. God also granted him the grace to work wondrous miracles. Through self-control, ascetic labors, and divine understanding, he had first put to death the passions of soul and body and attained profound apatheia, freedom from the passions.

While the venerable Stephen was in the desert, he wondrously tamed wild animals and fed the deer that approached him from his own hands. Once, when his disciple was thirsty, he struck the ground with his staff, and drinking water sprang up. He was simple in manner and gentle in conversation. He also struggled against heresies and wrote hymns. Having shone through his ascetic life and miracles, and having become an example of virtue to his disciples, he departed in peace to the Lord.

We celebrate the Holy Protection of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, in remembrance of the vision seen by Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ during the reign of the devout Emperor Leo. On Sunday, October 1, an all-night vigil was being held at the church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Blachernae. The venerable Andrew was there with a great crowd. At about the fourth hour of the night, he raised his eyes to heaven and saw the Queen of Heaven, the protection of the whole world, the Most Holy Theotokos. She stood in the air, praying and shining like the sun,

and covered the people with her precious maphorion, her veil. Seeing her, the venerable Andrew said to his disciple, the blessed Epiphanius, “Brother, do you see the Queen and Lady of all praying for the whole world?” He answered, “Yes, holy father, through your prayers I too see the Lady Theotokos, and I marvel.” After praying there for some time, the Theotokos entered the sanctuary, where the holy reliquary containing her sacred maphorion was kept.

She took it, came out, and stood before the royal doors of the sanctuary. She placed it on her most pure head, then reverently unfolded it and held it in her spotless hands. It was vast and awe-inspiring, and she spread it over the people gathered there

and covered the Christians with it. The blessed Andrew and Epiphanius saw it stretched out and shining for quite some time. As the Theotokos began to ascend to heaven, her divine covering gradually faded from sight. Yet her grace remained, together with her sacred maphorion, which was kept in the church at Blachernae. So we celebrate the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, remembering her glorious appearance at Blachernae, witnessed by Saints Andrew and Epiphanius.

Devout Christians, and the Greek people in particular, have experienced this defending protection many times. She has repeatedly guarded them and saved them from dangers that threatened them.

That is why the faithful express their gratitude to her in so many ways. Among her many titles, they proclaim her the Champion Leader, and they sing the Akathist Hymn to her with special devotion. More familiar and more recent, though, is the protection she showed our homeland in 1940 during the invasion by the armies of Hitler and Mussolini. To express the Greek people’s boundless gratitude to their Champion Leader, the Most Holy Theotokos, for this recent act of mercy, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece decided in

October 1953

that the feast of the Holy Protection, long celebrated on October 1, should instead be celebrated on October 28, so that the whole Greek nation could celebrate it together with its deliverance from the Italian and German yoke.

We thank our protectress for her compassion toward Christians, and we earnestly ask her to shelter us now and always from visible and invisible enemies. Without her protection and help, we who provoke God could not live upon the earth. Because of our many sins, we fall into many temptations, as it is written: “Many are the scourges of the sinner.” We would have perished long ago for our sins if the all-compassionate Lady had not sheltered us. Indeed, if our protectress did not pray for us, who would deliver us from so many dangers? Who would have kept us free until today?

Let us support the protection of our Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, by being careful. We should avoid putting ourselves in temptations and in dangers to soul and body that we can escape. Let us be watchful and sensible, avoiding anything that could stain or harm our soul or body. Finally, let us pray that she shelter us when our soul parts from our body and protect us from evil spirits. And on the fearful day of Judgment, may her divine protection save us from eternal Hell and grant us the grace to inherit the glory

of her Son.

Και ευχαριστούμε την προστάτηδά μας για την ευσπλαχνία της προς το χριστιανικό γένος, δεόμενοι εκτενώς να μας σκεπάζει τώρα και πάντοτε με την ευσπλαχνία της από ορατούς και αοράτους εχθρούς. Χωρίς τη σκέπη και τη βοήθειά της είναι αδύνατο σε εμάς που παροργίζουμε το Θεό να ζούμε πάνω στη γη. Διότι εξαιτίας των πολλών μας αμαρτιών πέφτουμε σε πολλούς πειρασμούς, κατά το γεγραμμένο: «Πολλές οι μάστιγες του αμαρτωλού». Προ πολλού θα είχαμε απολεσθεί για τις αμαρτίες μας, εάν δεν μας σκέπαζε η πανεύσπλαχνη Δέσποινα. Και πράγματι, εάν δεν δεόταν για μας η προστάτηδά μας, ποιος θα μας λύτρωνε από τόσους κινδύνους; Ποιος θα μας φύλαγε ελεύθερους μέχρι σήμερα;
