At the beginning of the Holy Gospel, Saint Mark tells us that the prophets foretold the mission and birth of the honorable Forerunner and Baptist John. Malachi says, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.” And Isaiah says, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.” The Evangelist Luke gives a detailed account of John’s conception and birth in the first chapter of his Gospel. John’s father, Zechariah, was a priest serving his appointed turn in the Temple at Jerusalem.
During the offering of incense, he saw an angel of the Lord inside the sanctuary, while a crowd stood outside praying and waiting. The angel told the troubled priest that his prayers for a son by Elizabeth, who had been unable to bear children, had been heard. The child would be named John and would bring joy and gladness to his father and to many others. He would be great before the Lord and filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb. He would turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. When Zechariah heard the message, his heart leapt, yet he doubted. By then, of course, that old longing
had fallen completely silent within him, and its fulfillment seemed like a dream. Elizabeth was already advanced in years. How could she bear a child now? His doubt did not frustrate God’s purpose. But the angel Gabriel told Zechariah that, as a punishment, he would remain unable to speak until the angel’s words came to pass. Meanwhile, the people outside wondered why the priest was taking so long. At last he appeared, but he could only tell them by signs that he had lost his voice. After Zechariah returned home to the hill country, Elizabeth conceived. The unexpected timing filled her with joy, but also with embarrassment.
For the first five months, while she could, she kept her pregnancy hidden. After nine months, Elizabeth, though advanced in years, gave birth to a son. Her relatives and neighbors heard the news, welcomed it as a great sign of God’s mercy, and came to congratulate her. Zechariah rejoiced too, while waiting for his silence to end. Eight days later, at the child’s circumcision, the relatives assumed he would be named Zechariah after his father, as was sometimes the custom among the Jews. But Elizabeth objected and said he would be called John. They told her no one in her family had that name. Then, by signs,
because Zechariah had also become deaf, they asked him what he wanted his son to be called. The elder asked for a small writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” Everyone there was amazed that husband and wife had chosen the same name. At once Zechariah’s tongue was freed, and he began to glorify God. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he said, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old: salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us; to show mercy to our fathers and remember his holy covenant, the oath he swore to Abraham our father; to grant that we, delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins. Through the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will visit us, to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
As word of all these events spread, wonder grew throughout the hill country. People asked, “What then will this child become?” And the hand of the Lord covered and protected him. When the time came, John preached in the region of the Jordan near the wilderness of Judea, fulfilling the prophecy about him: “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.” The Lord himself gave a solemn witness to John. He declared him greater even than the prophets and said, “Among those born of women, none has arisen greater than John the Baptist.” For John did more than prophesy about the Messiah.
He pointed him out, baptized him, and prepared disciples for him. John heralded the beginning of his Gospel, and he sealed his mission as Forerunner with the sacrifice of his life and the blood of his martyrdom. He proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and as the Son of God who came from heaven and was sent by the Father with full authority to give eternal life to those who believe in him, and to impart all grace and all truth.
The Archangel Gabriel told Zechariah about the honorable Forerunner: “He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.” And indeed, after the Annunciation, the Most Holy Theotokos visited Elizabeth in the sixth month of her pregnancy. The child in Elizabeth’s womb—the honorable Forerunner—leapt, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out. So the Forerunner received the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb, before he came into the world. Spiritual life is the coming of the Comforter into the human heart.
The Holy Spirit creates spiritual life, and the All-Holy Spirit blows where he wills.
A young child may have great grace, while a Christian of advanced age may know nothing of the divine uncreated energies of God’s grace. Grace, then, is not tied to age. Some people are counted worthy of great gifts from God at the very beginning of their spiritual life;
others are never counted worthy of them, or receive them only at the end of their lives. So it is possible for children, during worship and the Mysteries, to understand many things that older people cannot grasp. We should also say that parents, and mothers especially, have a duty to pray for their children, particularly for the children they carry in the womb.
For someone to learn to pray, certain things are needed. Among them are growing up in an atmosphere of prayer and having the blood of praying parents in one’s veins. That is why mothers should pray for their children during pregnancy and throughout their upbringing. Then God will send his grace and work for their good throughout their lives.
