Saint Photini lived in the time of Christ. She was a Samaritan and lived in the city of Sychar, where she led a dissolute life. Her neighbors all knew how she lived, and they had stigmatized her for it.
One day, the Samaritan woman went to the well at Sychar to fill her water jar. There she met a stranger she did not know. But he knew her: her whole life, down to the smallest detail, lay open before him.
Yet he did not expose or insult her. He did not call her a woman with many husbands or tell her that she was now living an illicit life. He saw that she needed more than the cool water of the well. She needed the living water of the Holy Spirit to bring life to her lifeless soul.
The stranger was tired and thirsty, and he asked her for a little water. She was surprised that a Jew would speak to her. He answered that if she knew who he was, she would ask him for water that never runs out—whoever drinks it will never thirst again.
After they had spoken for some time, she realized that this stranger was different from other Jews. She said to him, “I think you are a prophet. So I want you to settle a great question that has divided us into two religious groups.”
“One group says that we must worship God only in Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. The other says we must worship him only on the summit of Mount Gerizim, where our temple stands.”
“Which of the two is right?” The stranger answered that both were mistaken. God is not confined to one place on earth; he is present everywhere in the whole universe. For God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
The Samaritan woman answered thoughtfully, “What you are saying is hard for me to understand. But I hope the one we are waiting for—the Messiah, who is called Christ—will explain everything to us.” Then came his answer: “I who speak to you am he.”
After speaking with Christ, Saint Photini believed in him and called her neighbors to come and meet him. Christ stayed in Sychar for two days and shared the Word and his blessing with them.
Saint Photini was baptized by the apostles on the day of Pentecost, after the Resurrection of the Lord. Her two sons and five sisters were baptized with her. Accompanied by her sons and sisters, she preached the Word of Christ in Syria, Phoenicia, Palestine, Egypt, Carthage, and finally Rome.
Because of this great apostolic work, our Church calls her Equal-to-the-Apostles. As the years passed, Saint Photini continued to share the Word of Christ with fervor wherever his grace granted her the opportunity to travel.
In time she came to Carthage in North Africa. Her five sisters—Anatole, Photo, Photis, Paraskevi, and Kyriaki—and her younger son, Joses, were always with her. Her older son, Victor, was a soldier in the Roman army and held the rank of military commander.
Nero was the Roman emperor at the time. Not knowing that Victor was a Christian, he ordered him to persecute the Christians in Italy. Victor went to Italy, but he refused to carry out those orders.
Victor’s friend Duke Sebastian tried to change his mind. Instead, through the grace of Jesus Christ, Sebastian himself was persuaded and baptized as a Christian. When Nero learned what had happened, he summoned Victor, who had meanwhile taken the Christian name Photinos, and Sebastian to Rome. He also summoned Saint Photini, her sisters, and her younger son.
To make them renounce their faith, Nero used every deceitful means and every form of torture he knew.
Saint Photini and the other martyrs did not waver for a moment. They continually praised Jesus Christ. Many miracles took place during the terrible torments they endured. After each ordeal, Saint Photini and the other martyrs remained unharmed.
This only made Nero more determined, while many who witnessed the miracles came to believe in Christ and were baptized as Christians. After enduring countless torments, Saint Photini was imprisoned. There, in prison, she gave up her soul to the Lord.
We commemorate Saint Photini, the Samaritan woman, on February 26 and on the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman.
