When Saint Paraskevi was brought to be baptized, the priest asked why they had chosen that name. The answer was that she had been born on a Friday. But the priest saw another meaning in it: Paraskevi was destined to serve.
Her parents were devout, and they raised their daughter to defend the divine Word (Logos). Within fifteen years, both of them had died, leaving Saint Paraskevi alone in the world. She now sought to give herself completely to the things of God.
She gave her great wealth to the very poor and devoted herself to God. She went to the city ruled by the pagan king Antonios. There she preached the Christian faith and brought many people to Christ.
The king summoned her to his palace. Struck by her beauty, he said, “By the god Apollo, I have never seen such a beautiful young woman.” But when he learned that she was spreading Christianity, he grew angry. “How dare you come into my city,” he said, “and turn my people into Christians?”
“And you made them stop worshipping Apollo and the other gods. I would hand you over to the torturers, but I cannot overlook your beauty. If you do as I say, you will live with me in the palace.” The Saint answered, “I will never deny my God.” Then the king flew into a rage.
“I do not fear your tortures. Do whatever you wish.” The king was furious and ordered a crown of fire placed on her head. Saint Paraskevi remained unafraid. She even felt light and at ease, and not a single hair on her head was burned.
Instead of recognizing the miracle, the king ordered Saint Paraskevi to be crucified outside the city.
They placed a stone slab over the Saint’s lifeless body. A violent wind arose and shattered the slab, and the Saint was restored to health. This led some people to embrace Christianity. The king then ordered all the Christians to be hanged. As for the Saint, he ordered her to be thrown into a cauldron of pitch, oil, and resin. Before she was thrown in, the king summoned her and asked, “Why do you make so much of your punishments?” She answered, “By God’s power, my king, I will rejoice even amid the torments you inflict.” She invited him to come closer to the cauldron. When he did, he was blinded at once. Then the king fell at the Saint’s feet and said, “Pray to God.”
“Pray to your God that I may see again, and my subjects and I will become Christians.” Saint Paraskevi prayed to God for help, and God answered her prayer.
The king was now Theophilos, another pagan tyrant. He too tried the ordeal of the cauldron, but again it failed. Then he ordered her teeth pulled out and the nails torn from her hands and feet.
Finally, he ordered Saint Paraskevi to be beheaded. Here ends the story of her life and her many miracles.
