Saint George was born in Cappadocia sometime between 275 and 285, and was put to death in AD 296 or 303. His parents were Christians. His father was of Greek descent and came from Cappadocia, while his mother was from Palestine.
When George was ten, his father died. His mother took him to the region of Lydda in Palestine, where she raised and educated him. At eighteen, he joined the Roman army in Nicomedia. He distinguished himself while still very young and rose to the rank of tribune, a commander of a thousand soldiers.
Later, Emperor Diocletian appointed him to a command and gave him the title of count.
Saint George is called the Trophy-Bearer for his courage and heroism in battle. After dealing with external threats, Diocletian turned to reorganizing the Roman Empire. He decided that his subjects should worship him as a god and began persecuting Christians. He held three assemblies to organize the persecutions, and officials could attend them.
The officials were present. Saint George took the floor, confessed his faith in Christ, and spoke against the persecution of Christians. Diocletian grew angry and ordered his arrest.
In prison, George was tortured for his faith, and he endured the pain through prayer. First, they tied him down on his back and placed a large, heavy stone on top of him.
Then they bound him to a wheel fitted with rotating blades that cut into his flesh. An angel freed the Saint, and his wounds were healed. When this became known, Protoleon and Anatolios appeared before Diocletian with a thousand soldiers and confessed their faith in Christ. Diocletian ordered them all to be put to death. They are commemorated on April 23.
Diocletian then ordered a cistern to be made and filled with lime, and had Saint George shut inside it for three days. When they opened the cistern, they expected to find his body burned and destroyed. Instead, they found him standing there in prayer.
The people recognized the miracle and cried out, “Great is the God of George!” But the emperor thought it was some kind of magic. Saint George told him it was neither magic nor trickery, but the work of Divine Grace. Diocletian then ordered large iron shoes to be heated red-hot and forced the saint to walk in them.
Saint George walked and prayed, and suffered no harm. Even after seeing these new miracles, Emperor Diocletian still believed they were the work of magic, so he summoned Athanasius the Magician.
Athanasius brought two vessels containing powerful poisons, and the emperor ordered George to drink them. The saint prayed, drank the poisons, and suffered no harm. Then Athanasius knelt before Saint George and confessed his faith in Christ. Diocletian had him put to death.
The martyr Athanasius, formerly a magician, is commemorated on April 23. Alexandra, the wife of Emperor Diocletian, and the servants came to believe in Christ. Diocletian imprisoned them, and they were put to death the next day.
Empress Alexandra and her servants Apollos, Isakios, and Kodratos, who believed in Christ and were put to death by Diocletian, are commemorated on April 21. Saint George saw in a dream that he would soon receive the crown of martyrdom.
At daybreak, the soldiers brought him before Diocletian. The emperor asked him to offer a sacrifice at Apollo’s altar. Saint George entered the temple of Apollo and made the sign of the Cross. At once, the idol of Apollo fell and broke into pieces.
Diocletian sentenced the saint to death by beheading. His relics were taken to the region of Lydda in Palestine by his faithful servant, Saint Pasikrates. There, after Constantine the Great issued his decree of religious tolerance, the Christians built a magnificent church dedicated to Saint George the Trophy-Bearer and placed his holy relics in it.
Saint George is commemorated on April 23. If his feast falls during Lent, it is moved to the Monday after Pascha. The transfer of his holy relics is commemorated on November 3.
