Saint Ephraim was born in Trikala on September 14, 1384 AD. He was one of eight children in the Morfi family. When his parents had him baptized, they gave him the name Constantine.
Saint Ephraim lost his father when he was young. From then on, his mother took full responsibility for the family, including her children’s Christian upbringing. Even as a child, Ephraim showed a special love for God and the Christian faith.
When Saint Ephraim was fourteen, Turkish forces in the Trikala region, acting under the orders of Sultan Bayezid I, were taking Christian boys from their families. This was the first step in making them Janissaries. The Turks gathered young Greek boys and sent them to Turkey, where they raised them in special camps, filling their hearts with love for Allah and hatred for Christ and Greece.
These Greek boys became the feared Janissaries who, according to many accounts, were even harsher than the Turks themselves. Fearing that the Turks would take her son too, Ephraim’s mother advised him to leave his family home and go to a part of Greece that had not yet come under Turkish rule.
She told him that, once he reached such a place, he should find a monastery and enter as a novice, since he himself longed for the monastic life. Saint Ephraim followed her advice and, after many hardships, reached Mount Amomon in Attica.
Today, Nea Makri stands at the foot of that mountain. Christian ascetics had gathered there, and the mountain came to be called Amomon, meaning ‘the Mountain of the Pure.’ There was also a men’s monastery there, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Saint Ephraim took refuge in that monastery and remained there as a novice until he was eighteen.
At eighteen, he became a monk and received the name Ephraim. A few years later, he was ordained a priest. He spent very little time at the monastery. Usually, he lived apart in a nearby cave, leading an ascetic life.
The years passed, and the Ottoman Empire had brought almost all of Greece under its rule. Turkish troops under the command of Evrenos Bey were active in Attica. In 1424, some of those troops moved into the area around Mount Amomon and began destroying, looting, and killing, following the usual tactics of Turkish forces at that time.
They came to the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and demanded its treasures. But the monastery was poor. The only thing the Turks took there was the lives of all its monks, whom they slaughtered in the monastery courtyard.
The Saint was away from the monastery that day. When he returned the next day, he found the monks’ bodies in the courtyard and the monastery in ruins. After seeing to their burial, he withdrew for good to the cave where he had been living as an ascetic.
He came down to the monastery only on major feast days to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in its church. On one such feast, September 14, 1425, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Turks came to the monastery again.
At the monastery, the Turks seized Saint Ephraim and began to subject him to terrible torture, hoping he would reveal any hidden stores of treasure they had failed to find. For months he endured their torture, until May 5, 1426, when he died hanging upside down, nailed to the trunk of a mulberry tree. He gave up his soul to the Lord at the age of 42. Today, nuns live and serve at the monastery. A relic of Saint Ephraim is kept there, and hundreds of faithful people visit each day, asking for his blessing and help. By the grace of God, the Saint has worked thousands of miracles. The mulberry tree still stands in the monastery courtyard, sheltered by a structure built around it.
Saint Ephraim breathed his last on that mulberry tree. The peace that fills this place is beyond words. You too will feel it when, with Christ’s help, you visit Saint Ephraim.
