Saint Anastasia the Patrician: Between History and Hagiographical Tradition

Anastasia, a Constantinopolitan noblewoman in Justinian’s era, left the imperial court and founded a women’s monastery near Alexandria. She later lived in the Egyptian desert under Abba Daniel of Scetis, praying and fasting in seclusion while known as the monk Anastasios.

Saint Anastasia the Patrician: Between History and Hagiographical Tradition. Venerable Anastasia the Patrician was a prominent figure in women’s monasticism in Egypt during the reign of Justinian (527–565). Born into an aristocratic family in Constantinople, she held the rank of patrician at the imperial court. She left the city because of Empress Theodora’s jealousy.

She founded a women’s monastery near Alexandria, known as the Monastery of the Patrician. To escape Justinian’s search for her, she withdrew into the Egyptian desert. She went to Abba Daniel of Scetis, who dressed her in a male monk’s clothing and instructed her to live in a cave under the name of Anastasios the eunuch.

Venerable Anastasia remained there in seclusion, praying, fasting, and living in metanoia, or repentance, until her repose. Her sex was discovered after her death, when disciples of Abba Daniel prepared her body for the funeral and burial.

This is what the hagiographical texts presented below tell us. Their wide circulation in Byzantine manuscripts, together with the account of the saint in the Synaxarion of the Great Church of Constantinople, suggests that devotion to her spread and became firmly established during the Byzantine period.

A separate question is whether Venerable Anastasia the Patrician has any connection with Saint Patricia of Constantinople, whose relics are kept and especially venerated by the Roman Catholic Church in Naples, Italy.

Antonio Borrelli gives a brief account of the saint, whose feast is celebrated on August 25. A Greek translation of his text appears below. Saint Patricia, said to be descended from the great Emperor Constantine, was born in Constantinople. She received an education suited to the imperial court from her nurse, Aglaia, and took vows of chastity while still young.

She left the city because her relative, Emperor Constantius II, dated here to 668–685, had proposed marriage to her. She arrived in Rome with Aglaia and several attendants, and received the monastic habit from Pope Liberius.

When her father died, Patricia returned to Constantinople. She renounced any claim to the imperial crown, distributed her wealth to the poor, and set out on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

A terrible storm caused her ship to wreck on the coast of Naples, at the small island of Megaride, where Castel dell’Ovo stands. There was a small, secluded place there, and sadly, after a brief illness, she died.

After a heavenly revelation to her nurse Aglaia, her funeral was held with great solemnity. The bishop, the city’s duke, and a large crowd took part. A cart drawn by two oxen, with no one guiding them, stopped before the monastery of the Basilian Fathers at Caponapoli.

The monastery of the Basilian Fathers was dedicated to Saints Nicander and Marcian. During a stop in Naples on an earlier journey to Rome, Saint Patricia had chosen it as the place where her body would rest. Her relics remained there with the sisters who had followed her.

In time, they would be called the Patrician Sisters after her—the sisters of Saint Patricia. When the Basilian monks moved to the monastery of Saint Sebastian, the sisters who followed the Rule of Saint Benedict kept this monastery going, and it flourished for centuries.

Because of historical and political events, the relics were moved in 1864 to the Monastery of San Gregorio Armeno. Wrapped in wax, they are kept in a silver and gold reliquary adorned with precious stones, in the chapel beside the monastery’s monumental church.

People had always flocked to venerate her, especially because of the miracle of blood flowing from her relics. Myrrh, as at the tombs of other saints, flowed from her grave. A great quantity flowed one year on September 13, sometime between 1190 and 1214.

The blood, however, flowed miraculously from the socket of a tooth that a Roman knight had pulled from her body some centuries after her death, out of excessive devotion to the saint. The tooth and the blood are preserved in a precious reliquary.

Over the centuries, the blood flowed in smaller amounts and at different times. Today, after prayer, it appears abundantly along the walls of the vial. This miracle is less well known than the other one that takes place in Naples: the miracle of Saint Januarius, or San Gennaro, the city’s principal patron saint.

Saint Patricia is a co-patron of Naples, and her feast is on August 25. Her Synaxarion places her youth in the reign of Emperor Constantius. But the dates 668–685 belong to the reign of Constantine IV, called Pogonatos, and not to that of Constantius, who ruled from 337 to 361.

This brings us closer to Justinian than to Constantine the Great, to whom Saint Patricia is said to be related. In other respects, the two accounts in the Synaxarion have many striking similarities: noble and aristocratic birth; departure from the city to escape an emperor’s marriage proposal or an empress’s jealousy; monastic life; and a period living in the desert.

The account of Saint Patricia contains details that suggest some confusion. Although she is travelling toward the Holy Land, she is shipwrecked in the opposite direction, at Naples. And although it is not stated outright, she is regarded as the founder of a monastery and a women’s monastic order.

Her body is discovered and buried through a miracle. Finally, Saint Patricia’s account clearly contains many legendary themes added later, of the kind found in hagiographical legends.

Heavenly revelations disclose the divine will. Animals, guided by God, point out where the saint’s relics should rest. Blood and myrrh flow from the holy relics as signs of the saint’s living presence.

There are also wondrous events surrounding the removal of part of a relic by a believer who acted on his own initiative, though with reverent intentions. The saint’s relics probably came to Naples, perhaps during the plundering and transfer of holy relics to the West after the Fourth Crusade. There, people did not know the precise circumstances or even the saint’s name. Those who had taken the relics remembered only her title, the Patrician.

From vague accounts passed down by word of mouth, this spurious life story was fashioned. That may also explain why the renowned Bollandist hagiographer did not include Saint Patricia in his collection of saints’ lives, although he wrote at length about Saint Anastasia the Patrician.

So Saint Patricia of Naples may well be Saint Anastasia the Patrician, whose story was altered through a blending of historical and hagiographical traditions, something fairly common in accounts of the saints. The holy relics in Naples probably belong to Saint Anastasia the Patrician. It would be a blessing if a portion could return to where it belongs: to the Orthodox Church, and specifically to the parish church of Saint Anastasia the Patrician in the Holy Metropolis.

Finally, Saint Anastasia links the two foremost sees of the Orthodox East: the Ecumenical Patriarchate, first in rank, and the Apostolic See of Saint Mark, second in rank. She was born and lived in Constantinople, but became a nun, lived an ascetic life, and reposed in holiness in Egypt.

She therefore belongs to the traditions of the saints of both Constantinople and Egypt. It is especially significant that her parish church is in the Holy Metropolis of Peristeri. Through its Metropolitan, Chrysostom, a graduate of the Holy Theological School of Halki, that Metropolis has spiritual ties with the Ecumenical Throne. It also has ties with the Church of Alexandria through several of its clergy, some of whom now serve as bishops in the dioceses of the ancient Patriarchate of Alexandria.

You truly became an angel in your ascetic life, venerable Mother Anastasia, and received the joy of the angels. Raise me from the depths of my transgressions, that I may continually cry out in praise of your life. Rejoice, venerable mother, radiant with light, who found unfading joy and cast aside the heights of earthly fortune. Rejoice, you who cultivated the glory of a radiant life. Rejoice, lamp of holy ascesis; rejoice, torch of godly wisdom.
