The Life of Saint Tryphon and the Church in Terpsithea
This account begins with the Orthodox rite of bringing a child to church after forty days and connects baptism with belonging to the Church. In the early 1950s, residents of Terpsithea sought permission to build a church through their own contributions.

According to the tradition of the Church, when a newborn child is forty days old, the mother brings the child to church for the forty-day blessing. The priest then takes the infant from the narthex and enters the main body of the church, proclaiming: “The servant of God is brought into the Church, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The child is like a stone which, through the Baptism to come, will be fitted among the other carefully shaped stones. Together they will build up the temple, the Church. In this way, the newly illumined person becomes a bearer of the temple and a bearer of Christ. This explains why, in our Orthodox Church, every church building is built solely through the contributions of the faithful.
That is what happened with the Church of Saint Tryphon in Terpsithea, Glyfada. In the early 1950s, Terpsithea was still a new settlement, almost in its infancy, with about five hundred people scattered throughout the area.
They longed to enter a church of their own and to worship there in the fullest sense of the word. They expressed this in the decisions of the Association of Settlers and Landowners of Terpsithea and in the petition they submitted to the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece. They asked for his blessing and permission to build their church, pointing out that a very large site with a square had been approved by the proper town-planning authority. That is what the petition says.
The Holy Archdiocese congratulated the residents and issued permit number 1549, dated July 27, 1952, for the construction of a church. They laid the foundation stone and had already set up a tent to serve as a church, where services were held. Through the long efforts and sacrifices of all the residents and parishioners, the church was completed, wonderfully, in 1967.
Since the 1980s, the holy relics of Saint Tryphon, Saint Panagis Basias, and Saint Gregory have been kept in our church and set out for the faithful to venerate. They came through the first bishop and Metropolitan of the Holy Metropolis of Glyfada, Elliniko, Voula, Vouliagmeni, and Vari, His Eminence Paul.
That, my dear brothers and sisters, is a brief history of our parish church. According to the Synaxarion, Saint Tryphon was born in the town of Lampsacus in Phrygia. He lived in a difficult time for Christians. Born to devout but poor parents, he began working while still a child. As he spent hours outdoors with the geese, he made good use of his time by studying the Scriptures and praying, asking for divine illumination and the grace of the Holy Spirit.
He delighted in the eternal Word (Logos) of God and longed to be counted worthy of the delights of Paradise. This gave meaning to his Baptism, his divine illumination. While still young, he received the grace of the Holy Spirit. And although word of his gift of working miracles spread far beyond his homeland, Saint Tryphon continued to live a humble and simple life.
At that time, Gordian III occupied the imperial throne in Rome. Though a pagan, the emperor did not persecute Christians. He had a daughter who was beautiful, educated, sensible, and prudent.
She lived away from the eyes of others. But the devil, who hates all that is good, sent a demon that took hold of her mind and heart. As a result, she wanted to throw herself into water and drown, or into fire and burn.
The grief of the emperor and his wife was beyond description. They tried medicines and herbs and called in doctors and magicians, but all in vain. Then Gordian learned from the governor of Asia Minor that a young man in Lampsacus healed every kind of illness.
The emperor ordered that this man be brought to Rome at once. They searched for him in the fields. As they approached, he told them, “I am Tryphon, the one you are looking for.” Astonished by his words, the soldiers took him to their commander, who sent him under escort to Rome.
While Saint Tryphon was still three days’ journey from the great city, the demon, who hates all that is good, knew what was coming and began to torment the emperor’s daughter even more. “Tryphon will drive me out of this body,” it said, and it left her. Emperor Gordian wanted to be certain that she was completely healed, after all the cruel suffering she had endured.
Tryphon prayed to the Lord his God to show mercy and help him. Then Saint Tryphon appeared before the emperor. Calling upon the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, he addressed the evil demon so that everyone could hear: “Let us all see how powerless you are before the one true God, and let us see your ugliness.”
At this miracle, to everyone’s astonishment, a black, ugly, repulsive dog with bright red eyes suddenly appeared before them.
Saint Tryphon said to it, “Tell us at whose command you entered this young woman’s soul and mind, and how you dared, though you are so weak, to attack a human being, the image of God, and torment her.”
Filled with gratitude for his daughter’s unexpected healing, the emperor wished to keep Tryphon at the palace and bestow honors and offices upon him. His homeland was Lampsacus, where his missionary work took place.
Philip succeeded Emperor Gordian III. He was a fanatical pagan, harsh and inhuman. His short reign was indelibly marked by the blood of thousands of martyrs for the Christian faith.
During that persecution, some pagans reported to Aquilinus, the governor of the East, that Tryphon, the keeper of geese from Lampsacus, did not honor the gods of Rome but worshiped the God of the Christians.
Aquilinus sent word to Fronton, the local governor of Apamea, to arrest Tryphon. And so he did. They brought Tryphon in chains to Nicaea in Bithynia, where Aquilinus was staying, and imprisoned him.
On the appointed day, they brought Tryphon before the governor’s court. The governor asked his name, what he believed, what he thought about fate, and where he came from. “My name is Tryphon,” he answered, “and my earthly homeland is Lampsacus.”
As for fate, we Christians do not believe in it. We believe in the providence of the one true God, who created all things in order and harmony and guides and sustains them in His perfect wisdom.
Using a familiar method of interrogation during the persecutions, the governor tried to shake Saint Tryphon’s resolve with kind words and flattery. But Tryphon’s answer showed his deep faith and the courage that marked Christians in those days.
“I will show true wisdom if I hold fast to my confession of faith in Jesus Christ, even to a martyr’s death, so that I may come to Him sooner.” Aquilinus realized that Saint Tryphon would not renounce his faith.
First they hung him up and pierced his body with the tips of their swords. He endured the torment without complaint, groaning, or crying out. His words only enraged Aquilinus further.
So he ordered them to take the martyr of Christ down. When Aquilinus returned from hunting and found Tryphon still firm in his faith, Tryphon declared, “I possess the truth, and I am ready to give my life for it.”
“Have all this time in prison and all these torments still not brought you to obey the emperor’s command? Do you persist in defying it?” Tryphon answered boldly: “From the Lord my God, whom I have worshipped since childhood, I learned to remain faithful to Him and confess Him.” The governor then tried new torments, though it was winter.
“How long will you go on without feeling pain?” he asked. Tryphon answered, “How long will you fail to understand the surpassing power of my Lord? You labor in vain, trying to persuade me to deny Him and sacrifice to your idols.”
Again he ordered the torturers to intensify the torment. They beat Tryphon with rods and burned his wounded body with flaming torches. Then a radiant halo descended from heaven and rested above the martyr’s head.
“I thank You, Lord, for You have not left me defenseless in the hands of my persecutors. Be with me now, I pray, so that I may finish my struggle and be counted worthy to receive this crown, like all who have loved Your holy name. For You are glorified forever. Amen.”
Aquilinus finally lost hope of persuading Tryphon and ordered the executioners to behead him outside the city, as the laws of the time required. After Tryphon prayed, another miracle revealed that God was pleased with His saint.
Before the executioner could raise his sharp sword to behead the saint, the Lord took Tryphon’s soul, and so his earthly life came to an end. This is what the couplet in the Synaxarion recalls: Tryphon died before the sword struck, on the first day of the month.
In other words: “Tryphon, you died before they could behead you. And when did your life come to an end? On the first day of the month.” It was February 1, in the year 250. Some of his holy relics are kept today at Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos, where he is honored as a patron together with Saint Demetrios the Myrrh-streamer.

Μέχρι πότε δεν θα αισθάνεσαι τον πόνο; Έλαβε την απάντηση: Εσύ μέχρι πότε δεν θα εννοείς την ανυπέρβλητη δύναμη του Κυρίου μου, αλλά θα ματαιοπονείς προσπαθώντας να με πείσεις να τον αρνηθώ και να θυσιάσω στα είδωλά σας;
