Saint Thomas the Apostle
Absent from Christ’s first appearance to the apostles, Thomas believed after seeing the risen Lord’s wounds and confessed, “My Lord and my God.” Thomas was present at Pentecost and, according to Church tradition, later found the Theotokos’s tomb empty after her Dormition.

Saint Thomas the Apostle was one of the Lord’s twelve disciples. When Jesus rose from the tomb, He appeared to His disciples, who had gathered in the upper room behind locked doors for fear of the Jews.
Thomas was not with them then. When the other disciples told him they had seen the risen Lord, he would not believe them. But eight days later, the Lord appeared to the disciples again and invited Thomas to touch the wounds made by the nails and His side, which had been pierced by the spear.
Overwhelmed, Thomas bowed down and cried out, “My Lord and my God!” The Lord’s reply would teach all who are inclined to doubt the truth of the Gospel. He said, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
In other words, the Lord was telling Thomas, “You believed because you saw Me. Even more blessed are those who believed without seeing Me.” Thomas was with the other Apostles on the day of Pentecost.
According to the account affirmed by tradition, through God’s providence Thomas was once again absent from the gathering of the other Apostles at the Dormition of the Theotokos. He arrived three days later and asked them to accompany him to the tomb so that he could venerate the holy body of the Theotokos (God-bearer).
They did so, but when they opened the tomb, they were all filled with wonder and amazement. Her body was gone. Only the cloth in which they had wrapped the body of the Most Holy Theotokos lay in the tomb. The Most Holy Theotokos had risen and been taken bodily from earth into heaven, giving the Apostles wondrous strength for the vast and difficult work they had already begun.
At that time, a man named Abbanes was in Jerusalem looking for an architect who could build a palace for the king of India, one that would surpass the palaces of his predecessors in grandeur, wealth, and beauty.
The Lord knew what Thomas would do in India. One day, He appeared as a man in the marketplace and said to Abbanes, “Would you like to buy a captive builder I have?” “Yes,” Abbanes replied. The Lord pointed to Thomas, and they agreed on a price of three pounds of silver. Jesus then wrote on the required document: “I, Jesus, son of Joseph the carpenter, have sold you, Abbanes, my servant.” The buyer asked Thomas whether he was Jesus’ captive.
Thomas answered, “Yes. He is my Lord, who bought me at a great price.” So Thomas went with Abbanes and served him as a slave. The following night, the Lord appeared to Thomas again in a vision and gave him the silver He had received, saying, “Take the price paid for you, and My grace.”
The next day, the merchant and Thomas left for India. Thomas came before Gundaphorus, the king of India, who asked what he could make from wood and what he could make from stone. The Apostle answered that he could make plows, oars, and ox yokes from wood, and columns, temples, and royal palaces from stone.
The king said to him, “Can you build me a palace in a place I love?” Thomas promised that he could. The king took him to a beautiful place with springs and trees and said, “Draw the plan of the building on papyrus so I can see whether I like it. I will be away in another country on business for three years.”
“I want the palace ready when I return.” The Apostle drew a beautiful plan. The king was delighted with it and said, “You truly are an excellent craftsman. With your skill, you ought to serve a king.”
The king then ordered that Thomas be given gold to buy what he needed for the building. He urged the Apostle to lay the foundations at once. Thomas replied, “We cannot build a palace this month, but we can next month, in October.”
By this, he was speaking of the life to come. As the king had ordered, Thomas was given everything he needed, and he left for the building site. There, however, he began preparing a heavenly palace for the king. Every day he taught and baptized those who worshipped idols, and he distributed the wealth to the poor.
After some time, the king asked whether the building was finished. Thomas replied that he needed more funds to make the roof. The king sent a great deal of gold and a letter saying, “Build the palace roof as quickly and beautifully as you can, so that you may see it finished and I may honor you with praise.”
As soon as the Apostle received the money, he thanked God and said, “I thank You, Lord who loves mankind, for You know many different ways to prepare each person’s salvation.” Then he again distributed the money to the poor.
A little later, some people from the place where Thomas was staying came to the king. He asked them about the palace’s beauty and grandeur. They told him, “Your Majesty, do not expect any building from that man. He has given all the gold to the poor. And that is not all: he preaches an unknown god and works miracles.”
The king was shaken and ordered Thomas brought before him. When Thomas appeared, the king angrily asked whether he had built the palace. The Apostle replied, “I have built a beautiful palace, just as Christ, the one true architect, taught me to build.” The king said, “Then let us go and see it right now.”
Thomas told him, “I do not think you will need it in this present world. It will serve you when you leave this world.” The king thought Thomas was mocking him. Furious, he said, “Throw this fraud into a dark pit, along with the merchant who brought him here.”
While the Apostle was in prison, the king’s brother was so distressed by their loss that he became gravely ill. He called for his brother and said, “I was so upset by the loss that fraud caused us that I fell ill, and now I am leaving this life.”
A little while later, he died. An angel of the Lord took his soul to the dwellings of the righteous and asked which one he wished to live in. Seeing one especially beautiful dwelling, he begged to stay there.
The angel told him, “You cannot live there. It belongs to your brother. Thomas built it for him.” He replied, “Please let me return to my brother so I can buy it from him. Then I will come back here.”
The angel returned his soul to his body. At once he came back to life and asked for his brother. When the king came to him, he said, “My brother, I believe you would give half your kingdom to see me alive.”
A small favor was then requested. “Tell me, and I will do whatever I can,” the king replied. His brother said, “Give me the palace you have in heaven, and take as much money as you wish.” The king asked, “I have a palace in heaven? How?” His brother answered, “Yes, you do, though you do not know it. The stranger you have imprisoned built it for you. It is beautiful. I saw it when the angel of the Lord took me.”
Then the king understood and found a way around his promise. “My brother, if this were something within my kingdom and my power, I would keep my word. But this palace is in heaven.
Take Thomas himself, and let him build an even better one for you.” After this, the king freed Thomas and Abbanes and asked Thomas to forgive his mistake. Thomas gave thanks to the Lord and baptized the king, his brother, and all the officials.
Many followed Gundaphorus’s example and were baptized as Christians. When the Apostle had completed his work in that city, he went to another large city in India. There he baptized many people, including Mygdonia, the wife of King Misdaeus, and Tertiana, the wife of the nobleman Charasius.
The king and Charasius were angry because their wives no longer lived as they wanted. Knowing that Thomas was responsible, they ordered him brought before them. The king then ordered him imprisoned.
The women wept because they knew Misdaeus would put him to death. The guards went to the king and said, “King, release that sorcerer. Whenever he wishes, he opens the door and leaves. Your wife and children come and speak with him, too.”
The king went to the prison himself. Seeing the doors shut just as he had left them, he was astonished. After questioning Thomas, he asked whether he was anyone’s servant or a free man. Thomas replied, “I am the servant of my Lord Jesus Christ.” The king said, “I have had enough of your divinations. I will put you to death.”
When Thomas had finished praying, he blessed the faithful and prayed for them. Then he said to the soldiers, “Carry out the king’s order now.” At once they pierced him with their spears, striking him together.
And so the Apostle Thomas finished the course of his life in Mylapore, a suburb of present-day Madras, also called Saint Thomas, on the eastern side of the Indian peninsula. Some time later, a son of Misdaeus became possessed by a demon. Unable to find a cure for him, the king went to the Apostle’s tomb, hoping to take a piece of his holy relics and place it on his son so that he would be healed.
When he opened the tomb, he did not find the relics. A Christian had secretly taken them to Edessa in Syria.
“Do you believe now? To see the loving kindness of my Master, take some earth from my tomb and place it on your son. He will be healed at once.” So the king brought his son there. With great faith, he took a little earth from the tomb and placed it on his son, who was possessed by a demon. At once the boy was healed.
Then the king was baptized, along with everyone in his palace and others from the city. There was great celebration throughout the region. Our Church commemorates the Apostle Thomas every year on October 6.
