Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was born in Patara, in Lycia. He flourished around the year 300 and fell asleep in the Lord around 330.
His parents were neither rich nor poor, but they were devout and raised him to honor God. From an early age, Saint Nicholas showed what a devoted Christian he would become. He had a deep love for the Church, and during his school years he chose good and wholesome companions.
As the years passed, Saint Nicholas lived a virtuous and devout life. Later, the bishop of the region ordained him a priest. As a priest, he continued to live with virtue and devotion, helping the poor and everyone who was suffering as much as he could.
Saint Nicholas’s uncle sent him as a pilgrim to the Holy Land, to Jerusalem. He knew his nephew’s upright character and his reverence for sacred things. Saint Nicholas governed his uncle’s monastery at New Zion with such care and wisdom that it was as though his uncle, the bishop, had never been away.
After some time, Saint Nicholas himself wanted to venerate the Holy Sepulchre. He boarded an Egyptian ship with other Christians to make the pilgrimage. During the voyage, while he slept, he saw demons breaking the ship’s masts, intending to drown the Christians.
He gathered the sailors and told them, “You will face a fierce storm, but do not be afraid, for God will be with us.” Before he had finished speaking, the storm broke. Everyone feared the ship would sink, and they begged Saint Nicholas to intercede with God for their rescue. Saint Nicholas intervened, and the storm subsided. This was one of the Saint’s many miracles.
Saint Nicholas obeyed the angel’s command. Everyone welcomed him in Patara. Near Patara was a city called Myra. Its bishop had died, and the people were looking for a worthy successor. Saint Nicholas, a wise shepherd, did not disappoint them. When the pagan rulers Diocletian and Maximian saw the number of Christians growing, they began to persecute them. The punishments and suffering were unbearable, and Christians took refuge in the mountains and caves. After both rulers died and Saint Constantine came to power, things changed. The pagan temples were destroyed. Saint Nicholas is also the protector of sailors. He performed many miracles during his life, and many more after his death.
