Saint Marina the Great Martyr. “The executioner’s hand cuts you down with a sword, Marina; the Lord’s hand crowns you with divine grace.” In other words, the executioner beheads her, but the Lord crowns her by His grace. So the verse in the Synaxarion briefly tells the story of the holy Great Martyr and beautiful virgin.
Saint Marina the Great Martyr is commemorated on July 17. Her birth and upbringing. The virgin martyr Marina was born in the small town of Antioch of Pisidia around the year 270, during the reign of Diocletian or Claudius Caesar.
Her parents belonged to the upper class in Pisidia. Her father, Aedesius, was a priest of the idols, distinguished and respected among the pagans. Soon after Marina was born, her mother died. Her father therefore had to entrust his daughter’s upbringing to someone else.
It seems that the woman Aedesius entrusted with his daughter’s care was a Christian. So little Marina was raised from an early age in the new, holy faith. At twelve, she received Baptism and became a member of the Lord’s chosen flock.
She longed to learn everything she could about Jesus Christ. She had a holy desire to suffer martyrdom for her Savior and Redeemer, if He should ever count her worthy of it. When her father Aedesius learned that she was a Christian, his zeal for his pagan religion blinded him. He came to hate his own child and disowned his only daughter.
Marina was now fifteen years old. God had endowed her with rich spiritual gifts and striking physical beauty. The prefect wanted and tried to take her as his wife because he had fallen in love with her. When he saw her, he was struck by her physical beauty and the inner radiance of her face.
Without delay, he told her that he had decided to take her under his protection and soon make her his wife.
The young Christian woman remained silent, praying fervently within herself and asking God to strengthen and enlighten her, so that she would act as she should.
She answered as befits a soul devoted to Christ. The prefect was astonished by her modest but resolute and fearless reply: “For I am a Christian.” The very word “Christian” was enough to make him lose his temper.
Saint Marina’s sufferings began. Strengthened by the Lord, to whom she never ceased praying silently, she held fast to her confession of faith in Jesus Christ. The prefect brought her before a court and formally asked, under Roman law, whether she was indeed a Christian.
There too, Marina boldly confessed that she was a Christian. Those present were amazed to see such courage and heroism in a young woman. Because of her confession, she was sentenced to be flogged.
Yet her patient endurance and strength amazed the prefect, the officials, and the people. With her eyes raised to heaven, she kept praying and calling on the Lord to help and strengthen her, so that she could bear the flogging bravely.
The prefect ordered the soldiers to stop flogging her and take her to prison. Inwardly, he hoped that after this Marina might come to her senses and change her mind. A few days later, on his orders, she was brought before the court again. Once more she confessed her faith in Christ and refused to sacrifice to the idols.
They hung her up and tore her sides with iron claws. After these tortures, she was thrown back into prison and left without food or care. The envious devil then tried to break the saint himself.
He took the form of a great and terrifying dragon, like a serpent, and appeared before her. He thrust out his tongue and hissed, trying to frighten the martyr and draw her away from her prayer.
But when he saw that the blessed, beautiful virgin would not stop praying, he moved toward her and opened his mouth threateningly, as though to swallow her. The Great Martyr was terrified for a moment, but immediately called upon the saving name of Christ the Savior.
The dragon burst apart and vanished. Then the devil appeared as an evil man. Marina, firmer than ever in her faith, seized him by the hair. Finding a hammer that had been left there, she struck him hard on the head and back and humbled him completely.
He rushed at the Great Martyr, shouting that he would kill her if she did not stop praying. But Saint Marina drew fresh courage from her prayer. She seized the devil, who had taken human form, by the hair and whipped him.
She sees heavenly visions. After this, a powerful light flooded her dark prison cell. It shone from a Cross whose top reached toward heaven. Above the Cross, a pure, spotless dove circled in flight.
Saint Marina’s Synaxarion explains the signs in the vision. Together they revealed the Mystery of the Holy Trinity: the light signified the glory of the Father, the Cross signified Christ crucified, and the dove signified the Holy Spirit.
At one point the dove descended, approached Marina, the beautiful virgin, and said to her: “Rejoice, Marina, God’s spiritual dove, for you have conquered the wicked demon and put the enemy to shame. Rejoice, faithful and good servant of your Lord, whom you have longed for with all your heart, and you have hated every passing pleasure. Rejoice and be glad, for the day has come for you to receive the crown of victory and to enter, adorned as you deserve, with the wise virgins.”
And another miracle appeared on her body: all her wounds healed. They all tried to change her mind with flattery. But the prefect’s rage reached its height. In his anger, he ordered the martyr to be hung on a wooden frame and her body burned with torches. There was also a large cauldron of water.
Another miracle followed. They took the fair and pure Great Martyr Marina down from the wooden frame, bound her tightly, and plunged her headfirst into the water to drown her. Once again she prayed fervently to the Lord her God. At once a great earthquake struck, and the dove appeared again above the water.
The martyr came out of the water unharmed. Her bonds had fallen away, and she stood once more in prayer, giving glory to God. The dove settled on her head, holding a crown in its beak, and said to Marina, “Peace be to you, servant of God. Take courage and receive this heavenly crown from the right hand of the Most High.”
Come, Marina, to the dwellings of Paradise, and rejoice there with the saints.
And may you rest there. Remember that many men and women gave even their lives for Christ. Librius secretly ordered the commander of the guard to take the beautiful virgin and Great Martyr to the place of execution and behead her. There they beheaded the Saint.
After her death by the sword, the Christians secretly took her precious remains and buried them with the honors due to a martyr for the faith. In 1230, Western crusaders carried her relics from the Byzantine capital to Venice. Roman Catholics celebrate this on July 17, the day on which we Orthodox also commemorate the Great Martyr.
Saint Marina, the beautiful virgin, is regarded as the protector of children, especially those who are sick and frail and in need of healing. Christ, the King of Glory, took her as His spotless bride and joined her to Himself in a pure and undefiled union.
By His will, He gave you strength and showed you invincible against enemies and passions. For enduring bitter trials and cruel tortures, He crowned you with a double crown and placed you at His right hand as a queen. Beseech Him, all-praised Virgin Martyr Marina, to grant those who praise you salvation, life, and great mercy.
