He became a priest at eighteen and bishop of Illyricum at twenty. Today, the Holy Synod and our Church require a certain age and maturity.

But his words carried such weight, and were so inspired, that they stirred the people and led them to believe him. He entered the ranks of the clergy and rose in this way. Emperor Hadrian, however, heard about this.

And because Hadrian was an unbeliever, he immediately ordered the tortures to begin. They made a bronze bed, we are told, and lit a fierce fire beneath it.

Then they placed him on a blazing grate, but he suffered no harm at all. They put him in a large vessel filled with boiling oil and pitch, and the Saint emerged unharmed from that as well. Next, a sharp spike was made. As it turned, it pierced the Saint’s body.

When the Roman governor saw this, he believed in God and cried out, “The God of the Christians is alive!” The emperor ordered the governor Koremos, who had come to believe in God, to be put to death.

He too was beheaded. Wild animals were set upon Saint Eleutherios, but they did him no harm at all. When he was bound in chains, angels came down from heaven and freed him. Saint Eleutherios then went up a high mountain, where he lived and ate among the wild animals without the slightest fear.

Emperor Hadrian then sent soldiers to watch Saint Eleutherios. Through the saint, the soldiers came to believe and were baptized. The emperor again gave an order: throw him to wild beasts so they would tear him apart.

When it became clear that the wild animals could do him no harm, two soldiers finally beheaded him. And the most terrible part of this tragedy was what his mother, Anthia, had to endure. When Saint Eleutherios was beheaded, she could not hold back. She ran to him, fell upon him, and embraced the body of her child.

Then the executioner took the same sword with which he had beheaded Saint Eleutherios and beheaded his mother, Anthia. The mother’s blood mingled with her son’s. Their souls rose together to heaven to receive from God the crown of victory and gain eternal life.

A shell struck the apse at the back of the church. It came inside, passed beneath the Platytera icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, struck the Bridegroom icon at the Holy Doors, and fell in the middle of the church. The shell then ricocheted and went out through the main entrance.

There were twenty-five people standing outside the front of the church. The shell passed over their heads and landed in front of them. It did not explode.
