Saint Basil the Great. Saint Basil was born in Neocaesarea in Pontus in AD 330 to parents of strong Christian faith. He would become a great spiritual teacher, a leading theologian and Father of the Church, as well as a pastor, educator, and benefactor of the poor.

His father, Basil, taught rhetoric in Neocaesarea, and his mother, Emmelia, came from a family of Roman officials. Basil had eight brothers and sisters. Among them were Saint Gregory of Nyssa; Venerable Naucratius, an ascetic and wonderworker; Venerable Macrina; and Saint Peter, bishop of Sebaste.

His father gave him his first lessons. He continued his studies in Caesarea of Cappadocia, Constantinople, and Athens, studying geometry, astronomy, philosophy, medicine, and rhetoric.

Two of his fellow students would also play important parts in history. One was a shining figure: Saint Gregory the Theologian, a great Father of the Church. The other stood at the opposite pole: Julian the Apostate, whom the speaker calls a betrayer of Jesus.

During those years, Saint Basil and Saint Gregory the Theologian undertook missionary work. Basil was in Caesarea in the summer of AD 356, continuing his father’s tradition. In AD 358, moved by the death of his brother Naucratius, a monk, and encouraged by his sister Macrina, he was baptized and decided to devote himself to the ascetic life.

His generosity showed itself after his Baptism: he gave most of his possessions to the poor and to the Church. When he returned to Pontus from his journey, he distributed the rest of his property as well, wishing to live as a monk.

There he wrote rules for monastic life, rules that still guide life in monasteries today. With his deep grounding in the Orthodox faith and his remarkable ascetic life, Saint Basil’s reputation spread over time throughout Cappadocia. So Eusebius, the Metropolitan of Caesarea, fulfilling the divine will and the wishes of the Christians of the region, ordained Saint Basil a priest in AD 364.

In AD 370, after Eusebius died, Saint Basil succeeded him as bishop at the age of 41. He had the support of Eusebius, Bishop of Samosata, and Gregory, despite Emperor Valens’s efforts to prevent his election. He also corresponded with Athanasius the Great, Patriarch of Alexandria, and the Pope of Rome.

In the region under his pastoral care, he had to confront Arians and other false teachings. Across the Church, Basil the Great took up the spiritual leadership of Athanasius the Great. He worked tirelessly to uphold the Orthodox Christian faith and firmly defended the teaching of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea.

Saint Basil always helped those who were wronged or weary, the hungry and the sick, regardless of their background, race, or religion. He made his vision a reality by founding the Basileiad, a model of social care and charity even for our own day.

This institution provided hospital care and shelter for the sick and for strangers. It offered its services free of charge to anyone in need. Its workers were volunteers who gave their labor for the good of the whole community.

It became a model for other dioceses and taught the wealthy how to use their riches in a truly Christian way. It is remarkable that Saint Basil conceived and established such an institution in the fourth century AD. Julian the Apostate was an impious persecutor of Christians.

Saint Basil had known Julian when they were fellow students in Athens, and he went to meet him with the people. Julian demanded a gift from him. Having nothing else, the Saint offered him three barley loaves. Julian then gave an order to his servants.

Seeing the emperor’s contempt, Saint Basil said to him, “Emperor, we gave you what you asked for from the food we eat. And you have repaid us with what you eat.” Julian became furious and threatened that, when he returned victorious from Persia, he would burn the city and take its people as slaves.

Julian also threatened Saint Basil himself. When Basil went to the city, he asked the people to gather whatever valuables they had and store them until the money-loving Julian returned, so they could offer them to him. When Basil learned that the foolish emperor was returning, he asked the citizens to pray and fast for three days.

Together they climbed the twin-peaked mountain near Caesarea, where a church stood on one of the summits. In a vision, Basil saw a great heavenly host and a woman who told the angels to bring her Mercurius to kill Julian, the enemy of her Son.

Then he saw the Martyr Mercurius arrive, armed, before the Queen of Angels. At her command, Mercurius hurried away. Saint Basil was then summoned and given a book describing the whole creation of the world and, afterward, the creation of humankind.

At the end of the book, where it spoke of the creation of the human being, was an inscription that explained the vision. The Saint awoke. The meaning of the vision was that Saint Basil did indeed write an interpretation of the Hexaemeron of Moses. In it, he describes how God made heaven and earth, the sun, the moon, the sea, the animals, and all visible created things.

But before he could write about the seventh day and the creation of Adam and Eve, this great Saint breathed his last on earth. He went to heaven to meet the Lord whom he had loved so deeply.

After the vision, the Saint went with several clergy to the church of the Holy Great Martyr Mercurius. There, he found that the Saint’s relic and weapons, which had been kept in the church since his martyrdom in the reigns of Valerian and Valerius about a century earlier, were missing. Basil understood what had happened and hurried to tell the people about Julian.

Seeing the miracle and Saint Basil’s boldness, the Christians did not wish to take back the valuables they had set aside for the tyrant Julian. After praising them for their deed, Saint Basil gave them one third of the sum and used the rest to build shelters for the poor, guesthouses, hospitals, homes for the elderly, and orphanages.

Worn out by his great work in so many fields, Saint Basil the Great gave up his spirit to God on January 1, 379, at the age of forty-nine. He had opposed false teachings, especially Arianism, and had often stood against those in power. His weapons were faith and prayer, his sermons and discourses, his many ascetic and educational writings, and his ascetic life. His death grieved his own flock and the whole Christian East.

People of many different religious and ethnic backgrounds attended his funeral. His theological and doctrinal work, together with his care for those in need, is the great legacy he left us. The Orthodox Church honors his memory on January 1.

John Mauropous, Patriarch of Constantinople, New Rome, established a common feast for the Three Hierarchs—Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, and Gregory the Theologian—on January 30.

In the funeral oration for his dear and great friend Saint Basil, Gregory the Theologian, with his poetic and deeply thoughtful insight, was the first to call him an “educator of the young.” Among his many wonderful, divinely inspired works, Basil the Great also wrote the long and deeply moving Divine Liturgy that bears his name. After the shorter Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom became more widely used, Basil’s Liturgy came to be celebrated ten times a year.

It is celebrated on January 1, when his memory is also honored; on the first five Sundays of Great Lent; on the eves of Christmas and Theophany; and on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday.
